Zambian players abroad: Jacob and Donwell scores brace; Kalaba back at Braga

FC Utrecht new signing Jacob Mulenga got off the mark in an impressive fashion in a pre-season friendly when he scored a second half brace in his side’s 5-1 defeat of FC Zwolle on Saturday afternoon at the Zeudonbalch Sports Complex and Rainford Kalaba is back at SP Braga from his season long loan deal at second division Gil Vicente where he impressed. The Zambia International a summer signing from French Ligue two strugglers FC Chatteroux was in a class of his own when he played as a twin striker with Ricky pierce van Wolfswinkel in his side’s first victory in pre-season friendlies. Tsunami: Our time has come

         Zambia are one of just two countries in the southern African region still left with a chance of qualifying for the first-ever FIFA World Cup™ finals in their own backyard.

 

Having come close before, Zambia hold high hopes of going one better in the coming months and booking their place among the elite of world football at the 32-team tournament in South Africa.

 

But Zambia must finish top of the standings in their final round qualifying group that includes reigning African champions Egypt and two-time FIFA World Cup qualifiers Algeria.

Zambia’s captain Chris Katongo will be the key player in their side and is the only footballer from the country to enjoy a club career in a high profile league. Read more…

Zambian Players Abroad, 02/02/09: Tsunami returns, stuns Bremen

Germany

The second half of the league season begun this past weekend in Germany, the biggest upset of the new year took place in Bremen as Arminia Bielefeld hung on for a 2-1 victory over Werder Bremen. Despite being outpossessed 73% to 27% and outshot 21(5 on target) to 5 (2 on target), Bielefeld made their two shots on target count. Chris Katongo made his presence felt offensively setting up what would prove to be the winning goal.

Arminia Bielefeld played the match in a 4-5-1 formation, hoping to fend off a notoriously strong Bremen attack, as they set-up in a 4-4-2 diamond formation. It was the visitors who got on the board first though, courtesy of Thorben Marx, as he was able to sneak into the box and connect on low cross from the right side. The initial ball out to the flank was supplied by the Tsunami, who was playing in a central attacking midfield role. Read more…
