Chinese firm to build Independence Stadium

July 28, 2010

Government has signed a contract with a Chinese firm for the re-construction of the Independence stadium which is expected to gobble US$ 87 million.

Works and Supply Minister, Mike Mulongoti said the contract was signed last week and the contractor was expected to go on site by next week.

Mr. Mulongoti said in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.

He said US$ 87 million would be spent on rehabilitating the stadium to have a 50,000 seater capacity.

He said construction works on the 40,000 seater Ndola stadium were also progressing.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mulongoti has said works on the Livingstone stadium would not commence as Government had not put the project on its priority list.

He said it was prudent that Government concentrated on the two stadia before embarking on the Livingstone stadium.

The independence stadium has not been operational after it was declared unfit by the world football governing body FIFA.

I really hope at this time around, Government will walk the talk. I think that FAZ would benefit more in monetary term if Independence Stadium is completely erected due to the economy of Lusaka province.

So many empty promises by Government, and what is this nonsense of a 50,000 Seater Capacity, why not make it 65,000.Football has become a business nowadays, the more people you have in a Stadium watching a match the more money you make through gate takings. How many fatal accidents have we had at Independence Stadium due to over-clouding?.Its seems to me,Government Leaders are the most shallow minded chaps, coz they do not think ahead. And Mr.Mulongoti is one of the most useless Ministers we have at the moment, and going by the Auditor General’s report,I fear for that $87million coz long hands by short people will shift the money into their pockets.

If the contract has been signed, then we are likely to see some movement in that direction.

It will be good to have the two venues ready soon so that thing of not having a playing field like we are now will be buried.

I hope Mulongti doesn not divert the funds to the other MMD campaigns and by elections. This all politics. How do you sign a contract before the on set of the rainy season. When the contractor moves on site it will be December. They will abandon the contract . Chilanga cement is near by and there Matero, Chipata, Mandevu and Kabanana the people will get jobs with the contractor to erect the stadiam.
