Fwayo signs a four year deal at Swiss side FC Basel

May 26, 2010

fwayo

'Fwayo Tembo is the most expensive Zambian player ever?

Chipolopolo winger Fwayo Tembo is believed to have a four year deal with Switzerland champions FC Basel from Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel is a deal worth 2 million Euros, Zambianfootball.net understands and can exclusively reveal.

The ‘Galactico’ as he is known has been spotted in the Swiss city of Basel by a Zamfoot Crew source.

“Tembo is here. Has just signed a four year contract and it is worth 2 million Euros,” the Zamfoot Crew source revealed in what could be the highest transfer fee ever for a Zambian player considering Portsmouth paid Kaizer Chiefs around 500, 000 Pounds for the services of Collins Mbesuma and Chris Katongo’s move to Germany Bundesliga 2 side Arminia Bielefeld from Danish side Brondby at around 1.3 million Euros two years ago.

FC Basel who won the Swiss league last season with 80 points started tracking the progress of   the former Zambia-20 star at the turn of the year after a string of man of the match performances for Etoile du Sahel in the Tunisian league. The 21 year old was Etoile’s star performance for Etoile in which he banged in 8 goals in 12 games.

Fwayo is a product of Edusport Youth academy which has also produced the likes of Rodger Kola and Justine Zulu.

He came to stardom at the 2007 African Youth Championship in Congo were he emerged as the top scorer with 5 goals and this led him to a trial at Spanish giants Real Madrid. While a move could not materialize at Santiago Bernabeu , his signature was snatched by Etoile at the end of 2007.

fwayo tembo

Fwayo caught the eye of FC Basel from February to May 2010

While his stay in Tunisia wasn’t successful initially, the 2007 World Youth Championship star made he utilized his second chance when he was welcomed back.

Surprisingly Fwayo has only won two international caps with his first coming on 29th March 2009 in the 1-1 draw with Egypt in Cairo as an injury time substitute. His last also was against a North African opposition three months later in the 2-0 home loss to Algeria at Konkola Stadium.

Fwayo will be playing Champions League football next season and also be a teammate of Ghanian right back Samuel Inkoom

Zambian players have been on the move recently. Signs Chibambo has signed a pre-contract with Egyptian side El Masry. El Masry finished the season on 13th place.

Chibambo has been on the books of Heartland of Nigeria.

Maccabi Tev Aviv’s Zambian striker Emmanuel Mayuka is also believed to be in Switzerland tying up a deal at Young Boys though the two clubs are yet to agree a fee which is believed to be  over 1 million Euros. Young Boys came second behind FC Basel and will also be competing in Europe’s top club competition.

This boy has made us eat humble pie, remembers the reports on this blog that he was drinking Chibuku in Kalingalinga? Mayuka must also go. These boys are young and I am sure they will end up in France. Pity Mbola and Kalaba. Sometimes, I wonder, Kalaba moving from Europe to SA? Do you guys now that the Maliga from Kenya at Inter was in Sweden like Isaac but he ended up at Parma now Inter while Isaac is back at Orlando.

That is what is expected of many of our players.Zambian players should ply their trade in Europe and not here in South Africa.South African league is very inferior even within African continent.I am surprised to hear that players like Isaac Chansa and Rainford Kalaba are opting to come here in South Africa when they can play in European leagues.Bravo Mayuka and Fwayo.

Thats what i call positive critism, and you should be proud that you did it because your outcry was one of the reasons he reconsidered his decision and well all is well that ends well. Way to go Fwayo

Great. At some point the story was sad for Fwayo. I had even made overtures to see him when he was here in Lusaka on that long break. Now, no hide and seek.

Fwayo Tembo is a terrific talent. This should be the beginning of big things for the boy.

I have always said Zambia is awash with talent. It is how it is managed that matters.

Congratulations Fwayo. Tiye nayo manje go go forward kulibe kubwelela kubuyo manje! Am so excited.

Hope Mayuka’s move goes through soon enough as well. As for SignsWonders Chibambo, work hard and do a ‘Fwayo’ from North Africa. From what I saw of the behaviour of the Algerian club Setif players on their Cameroun import Francis Ambane, I have misgivings.

Anyway, Egypt is different from Algeria, afterall Fwayo has succeeded in Tunisia.

I hope the 2007 U20s will reach their peak for the national team in a few years. If you look at Honduras who Zambia beat 4-3 in the 1999 U20 World Cup, they have come through and qualified to the World Cup. It looks as though it takes 8-10 years for top youth teams to have an impact on the national scene. Examples are Greece (R/U Euro U21 1998, Euro 2004 champions), Spain (Winner World U20, Winner Euro 2008).

Thumbs up to the young fwayo and i pray the hot mayuka will also land his deal. Zambia certainly deserves better representation in the top leagues of europe. I hope someone is working on something to get our TP contigent into europe also. This is great news for the nation. All the best chipolopolo as you take on Chile!!!!!

I think age cheating is affecting Zambia. I think only Chintu and Sinks are still active 4 Zambia. I heard that Gerald the Barca defender was in the U-20 team in Canada?

Good news indeed for Fwayo, I hope Mayuka also clinches a deal . Swiss clubs are better clubs clubs to have our lads noticed by Europe’s big clubs.

luks like our frontline is sorted, we are really spoilt for choice in the likes of Chama boy, Mayuka, fwayo, Manadanda (singuluma), Jacob, chris, ba Mupa, jetli, the list is endless, and this is pue quality

age cheating is real and its destroying our soccer development, remeber our 99 boys who went to the world cup in nigeria, how many are playing soccer activley, none,i expected our boys who went to canada to make it to under 23,but as it is only a few are playing active soccer,we need to fight age cheating

  21. Logic on Wed, 26th May 2010 12:42 PM

Rainford Kalaba should feel very foolish because the same North Africa he dissed has opened up a huge door for Fwayo. It was only a few months ago that we jumped on Fwayo for wasting his talent in the compounds but luckily, he came back to his senses and look where that has led him. Kalaba should not think kicking back in Ndola will do this for him.. Humility my friend. To Fwayo and others like him, I say congratulations on this very great personal and national achievement. Keep on making us proud.

In a way, our ‘jumping on Fwayo’ has made him achieve what he has just achieved. So let us not relent. When a player or administrator is doing something that is obviously wrong, let us bravely critice and where possible, come up with possible solutions. We all learn from our mistakes but then there are those who are determined not to learn from their mistakes.
I am worried about parents who quickly defend wrongs being done by their sons. They may think they are defending them only to realise they are accelerating their exit from stardom.

  27. Magic on Wed, 26th May 2010 1:24 PM

Good stuff, the prospect of Fwayo and Mayuka playing Champions League football is great. Hope they will be regulars and use it as a spring board to better teams. Keep it up.

Isaac Chansa back at Orlando Pirates makes me feel sick: Maybe i overrated him.

Here we are Fwayo was underrated and he has risen to prove his critics wrong. I am happy for him, and the prospects of our football look better going forward.

This is great news. Certainly, this is not where we thought he was going to end up just a few months ago. But I’m glad he turned it around. I hope the other players will be motivated by his actions. I hope Mayuka secures a transfer as well.

By the way, I like the new look ba Zamfoot! Keep up the good work.

This is just awesome!!! Thank goodness Fwayo has made his big move. With hard work our players can acheive anything. Good luck in Switzerland and score many goals my dear brother… we will see you in the chipolopolo shirt soon enough.

Class of 2007 is going to be the backbone of Zed football: Clifford Mulenga, Stophilla Sunzu, Fwayo Tembo, Mayuka, Dennis Banda, Nyambe Mulenga, Sebastien Mwansa, and Justine Zulu. This is the future right here and who knows maybe some of the other guys might also start to bloom. I have no fears for 2012 or 2014 anymore, all we need is a technical bench with vision and thanks to George Lwandamina for unearthing these youngsters you deserve honourable mention sir… only you and Patrick Phiri have taken Zambia to the world cup, and you having taken us past the group phase… let us rinse and repeat at the senior level

  32. Kopala on Wed, 26th May 2010 3:43 PM

Guys let us be positive towards our players, off courese we do not expect all of them to tell their right age but i belive most of them do. We have poor medicle facilities and off coupled with poor medical facilities which make our players retire prematurely and off course our poor disciplinery record. Even in Europe most players playing well now were not god enough for their countries under 20 , under 23 even the under 17 teams , but today they are playing for their respective national teams and will be in South Africa. Most of our players are as old as they are saying off course not all of them.

Now that is progress, that is advancement. This will now sound cliche but I have to say it, Rainford look at your friends and just begin to start thinking for a second.
