Last season’s CAF Orange Champions’ League group stage finalist Zesco United open its confederations cup campaign with a West African job against Worri Wolves of Nigeria in the delta region.
Zesco United coach Fighton ‘Big Figh’ Simukonda has a full strength side to choose from and hopes to repeat last season’s success when he defied all odds and guided the boys from Ndola to the group stage.
Going into this fixture, ‘Team Ya Ziko’ are the favourites and ‘Big Figh’ looks like he will maintain his back four built around former international Billy Mwanza. Rookie defender Percy Kisonge will definitely get the nod to the partner Mwanza while the ageing but solid and old fashioned Rodgers Kamwandi will be deployed on the right full back with William ‘Pastor’ Chinyama on the left.
Across the middle, Clifford Chipalo and Jackson Mwanza will be on the flanks and while Siloni Jere will be handed the responsibility of playmaking. Kondwani Mtonga will be deployed in front of the back four.
New signings duo Arthur Kaseloki and Derrick Kabwe looks set to be picked ahead of the more established strikers like Enoch Sakala, Lottie Phiri and Nicholas Zulu.
Zescolo will host Worri Wolves at Trade Fair Ground in a fortnight.
Should Zesco United progress, they might face Collins Mbesuma’s Moroka Swallows who still have to negotiate their way past Zimbabwean side CAPS United.
Elsewhere in the continental showpiece, Zambian born’s Malian midfielder Souleymane Demba will be in action for Moroccan glamour side Raja Casablanca. The 18 year old is yet to be capped by Mali.
In related news CAF Champions League envoy Zanaco beat Ivory Coast side ASEC Mimosa thanks to a first half goal by Makundika Sakala. The lanky forward has now scored three goals in the competition.
Zanaco will head to Abidjan with a 1-0 advantage and any draw will qualify them to the next round.
Davies Nkausu’s Supersport united thrashed Mozambique Champions Ferroviario de Maputo 3-0 in the second round, first leg played in Johannesburg on Saturday.
In Kigali, Rwanda, defending Champions TP Mazembe were stunned by the APR as they lost 1-0. Mazembe has four Zambians on their books; Hichani Himonde, Stoppila Sunzu, Given Singuluma and Sebastian Mwansa.
On the local scene, Power Dynamos beat Konkola Blades 2-0 in Kitwe thanks to goals Joseph Sitali from Kennedy Mudenda and Joseph Sitali. Crowd puller Nkana drew with ‘Brave’ Nchanga Rangers in Chingola.
