Lusaka Stadium in the offing as Independence Stadium 'lies in state'.
President Rupiah Banda in China has reportedly overseen the signing of a Memorundum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chinese government for the construction of a new stadium in Lusaka.
Sports infrustructure in Zambia is in dire straits and this move will come as a welcome development for football in this country.
The Chinese are already hands on the hammer in Ndola moulding an ultra modern stadium on the Copperbelt.
Sports Minister Kenneth Chipungu has confirmed the signing of the MoU to give a glimmer of hope to Zambian fans.
The MoU signed by Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane will span the period from March 2010 to February 2015.
Zambia has had mediocre sports arenas since the former British colony got independence 45 years ago attracting shame from neighbouring smaller countries and abroad.
The only two stadia which acted like cathedrals in football terms in Zambia; Dag Hammerskjoeld and Independence Stadium were brought to their knees by government and lamentably no one has bothered to reconstruct them with milions of money meant for that exercise misapplied in the process.

Finish the rehab of the independence statdium and start and build anothe new stadium.
Good work in Ndola Mr. Bwezani. That was good Levy.(Posthumously)
Zima Ndola on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 11:23 AM
Lets finish re-building the independence stadium first and then turn our attention to the new stadium on paper. We need a good stadium were we can watch the 2012 qualifiers from,we are tired of Chillabombwe its very risky going there.Lets not get excited, finish the indedence stadium.
bob munyati on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 11:50 AM
Lets leave former independence stadium and constract some where else and have two places in Lusaka. I also think that the government should also think about workin on supporting infrastructure as roads in ensuring that we get the best hopes in hosting Africa cup or other teams

Former Bordeaux coach Rohr appointed new Gabon boss
(Reuters) – German born manager Gernot Rohr has been appointed as the new coach of 2012 African Nations Cup co-hosts Gabon, the country’s football federation has said.
Rohr, 56, replaces Alain Giresse, whose contract was not renewed after Gabon were eliminated in the first round of this year’s Nations Cup finals in Angola.
Former Girondins Bordeaux coach Rohr, who was sacked by Ligue 2 side Nantes in December after a short spell in charge, signed a two-year deal over the weekend.
Gabon will co-host the 2012 Nations Cup finals with Equatorial Guinea.

I waz also thinkin the same, lets not let independence be another Daj hammar story, Why not finish wats simple indepondo then start the new thing, remember its been 5years since the MoU for the Ndola stadium was signed I only hope theres been remakable progress Anyone with facts kindly update us on the progress..
Zima Ndola on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 12:55 PM

A lot of work has been done on the Ndola Stadium,it’s only that there has been too much rains. The guys are serious they are even working at night.
Mabbwana on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 12:57 PM
Its good to hear that more stadiums are coming. I want to believe that this is another MoU as there is already commitment from China to finish the independence stadium.
With the upward surge in our game, the stadiums coming, we can only hope for the best as we look forward to Brazil. We remain with putting our house in order at FAZ.
Spaks on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 1:55 PM
There is substantial progress on the Ndola stadium, its like those guys work 24 hours, il try and take photos the next time im on the copperbelt
Big Steve from SA on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 2:10 PM
Was there not talk that the whole stadium needs an overhaul? If this is the case no proper construction company will go ahead and just sort out the grandstand and leave the rest of the structure in a dodgy state.
Magic on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 3:07 PM
This is good news. We should be looking at hosting AFCON in the not too distant future. It will be good for Zambia. Worst case, we can co-host with our brothers in Zimbabwe. We claim to be a footballing nation but we were almost disallowed from hosting home games due to poor stadia. Anyways, that looks like a thing of the past.

Swallows virtually clinched their success in the 35th minute with a simple close-range goal from 19-year-old prospect Augustin Leonard, with Lefa Tsutsulupa and substitute Collins Mbesuma completing the scoring late into the second half.
Mbesuma’s strike in the 86th minute from 25 metres was a real scorcher and recalled his halcyon day when he was setting PSL scoring records for Kaizer Chiefs.

Which game is this?
Tito on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 3:38 PM
So there is some hope of good stadia. In late 70s and 80s we used to watch football at Dag with my friends. Would be good to go back and watch in new stadia. The council should also put some terraces and rehab the change rooms/clubhouse in Musa Kasonka. Not a bad stadia in Masala but wasted by neglect.
Spaks on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 3:48 PM
The last i know is that the only problem was the grand stand area which they raised down for safety reasons, the are plans to modernise it but in the mean time they should rebuild the grand stand area as it is clear they want to start with the new stadia first
jc on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 3:52 PM
What the Government should do is to look for Land elsewhere, like the Kafue Road, Chongwe Road or near the MFEZ. Such a stadium needs to be in a decent place unlike where independence is at the moment.
Anonymous on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 3:53 PM
the whole stadia needs an overhaul..its bin there since 1964, without any maintenance…lets graze it down and just start all over again…

anyone with the rehabilited Author Davies Stadium pictures out there, please? what is the new sitting capacity of the Power Dynamos home?
Tm jics on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 4:37 PM
Only God knows when we’ll have better stadia. Its been 3 to 4 years and almost 5 MoU have pass on Independence Stadium. Now its a camp site for Flooded victims. O God help us.

Fingers crossed for INDEPENDENCE stadium. This not the first time we are hearing new plans and initiatives…
Having a modern stadia or even more humble stadia is proving a tall task, just like qualifying for WC, one wonders if we are making harder than it is. It’s become like barrier, and we don’t believe it can be a reality at present, but when we are over the barrier we will wonder what all the fuss was about.
We don’t need the biggest stadium in Southern Africa, just an efficient one. Independence Stadium was built of simple bricks, It can’t be that hard to build more…

To much history to even consider moving the site i feel… i think it’s in a good place anyway, there are lot’s of people that live around, but at the same time it is not in center of town…
Jojo on Mon, 1st Mar 2010 7:38 PM
They havent increased the sitting capacity, but everything at the stadia is new,it’s looking really really nice…the dissapointing thing about arthur davies stadium is that there is now no room for expansion, there was a lot of space in front of the stadium but the council have sold all that land and the stadium is now sorrounded by houses..

What’s that song by the temptations called again… oh yeah, ‘I ain’t too proud to beg’.
Our President has managed to ‘negotiate’ with China for another stadium to be built, as if we don’t have one of the largest cement factories in Southern Africa, idol youths roaming the streets and land aplenty.
Also, what was the point of laying that artificial turf at Independo? What a waste of money and time.

Maybe Fwayo Tembo just needed a break to clear his head, you know players can do that too. As long as He wasn’t wasting his talent on liquor and women while he was on his break we should not really judge him.

what is wrong with Zambia? literally we have nothing? even a simple africa cup we cant host, all africa games, we cannot! wats up.? where have we gone wrong? poor infrastructure, poor management. wake up ladies and gentlemen. those of us outside zambia we try to say good about zambia but we know we have nothing. is it that someone is sleeping on duty or what? i dont get it. its like we are not moving with time. zambia is not only about Lusaka and Ndola…those in right posistions think big. ………………
