Mirror report: Mbola signs for Spurs

February 23, 2010

MbolaEmmanuel100125vsNigeriaBPP310

Spurs beat West Ham Utd to the signature of the talented Zambian whiz kid

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp swooped for Zambia’s brilliant young left back Emmanuel Mbola in a £1 million deal last night.

The 16-year-old defender has already got a remarkable collection of 20 caps for his country and was the youngest player in the recent African Cup of Nations.

Mbola flew in from his Armenian side Yerevan along with his agents to thrash out terms with Spurs who have beaten ambitious West Ham to his signature.

The teenager will sign a contract at White Hart Lane but probably be sent to a club in Europe for first-team experience next season – although astonishingly he already qualifies for a work permit.

Mbola went to Armenia nine months ago and is a regular for their team. He shot to fame with Zambia at international level and is a regular in their team.

The Zambians are just outside the top 70 in the FIFA rankings, so Spurs will be given the go-ahead to complete the transfer which will see Mbola groomed as a future first-team player.

Mbola played in all of Zambia’s game in the Cup of Nations after becoming the first choice in the qualifiers. He also appeared in a Champions League qualfier for Yerevan this season.

It is a meteoric rise to the top and Spurs are delighted to have pulled off the coup, although rivals Hammers are upset as they had him earmarked as one of their prospective stars of the future too.

This is great news. He with Bale and Assou-Ekotto. I think that he should try and fight for a first team place rather than go on loan. However, if he can be loaned to a decent team then it might be worth his while. He should make sure that he is surrounded by the right people that can give him sound advice. He is a legitimate diamond in the rough – don’t let these blood suckers turn him into a blood diamond. We now need to get a mid fielder and a striker into top European teams then mould our team around them. This is a step in the right direction. HR, thanks for having the vision and the balls to field him in your team. Mbola, the work starts now. Don’t take any advice from Mbesuma :-)

I am a very happy zambian and I know Ema (Mbola) will not blow it up. At his age he has shown alot of maturity that will make him a star in the premiership league.

    Bravo Mbola! We love you.

this is great news and just a word to mbola. When you arrive or first address to the press DO NOT say “im happy to be at spurs and im using this as a stepping stone to other big teams like manchester or barcelona” dont use this line… because fans for all the teams in england are very proud and passionate of their teams. Mbesuma made a mistake and said im using portsmouth as a stepping stone or as route to other big clubs. Fans and management did not spare him or support him. There fans play a big role in a carear of a player they can boo you through and through if you say the wrong things. even clubs like tranmere, swansea, bristol,Nottinham, their fans are very passionate and you will find that a man has been a supporter of these clubs for 50 years including his grandshildren. so when you go there first interview show then that you have your heart attached to the club forever. Your ambitions should be your secret. work hard and be disiplined thats all.

I think we have started on a good note, it is very difficult for a defender to break into the EPL as well as GK. It is up to the other Zambian players to rise to the occassion and follow EM, it should be the other way infact.

  15. Davie on Tue, 23rd Feb 2010 11:23 AM

Mbola is just an example of what one can achieve if you are focused and have set out a clear go for yourself. Hats off to Herve Renard who helped identify, believe in the boy and gave him enough game time. To have gained 20 caps is no joke at all. Thats why am keen to see what Herve Renard has seen in one Thomas Nyirenda. I guess watch out for that boy without forgetting the now turned defender in Stophira Sunzu. Such quality to identify and groom players is a preserve of a good coach no matter what your opinion is. See you around as we move into this new and exciting generation of budding young stars at the national team.

This is good news to all the zambian’s hope he will work to reach even greater teams. We can now turn to zanaco,i hope they train hard to reach the next round. We will be they to give them all the support they need on the day.

Great news, the biggest advantage Mbola has compared to Mbesuma that people dont see is that Mbola has some European experience oready unlike Mbesuma who was just thrown into the deep-end. He will definately rock the premier league in 2-3 years time (if not sooner). Although Spurs have quite a few good left backs in their ranks,Gareth Bale,a good example,is one who doesn’t get too much game time,so it’s definately a game of patience to be played & practised here. All the best Mbola, represent the motherland!!!

Thats very true, Mbola already understands life in urope but another factor is that he is young. The bad elements have not yet set in. The only reason indisciplined players like Benni Mcathy have made it in Europe is that they went there very young now if you go there old and already have bad elements in you it will be a lot harder. I believe Mbola will go very far in hs career in the EPL. I just hope the club management find it fitting to fight out a work permit for him instead of loaning him out, or better still loan him out to the coca cola division iso he acclamatizes quickly with the horrible England weather.

But we need stadia as well. By now the grand stand could have been built at independence stadium for national team games.

Good luck to Mbola and all the best. Hope it will be encouraging news to the rest of the players. Some my non-zambian friends were even asking as to where players like Mbola, Mayuka and Sunzu have been after angola afcon 2010, as most guys here just know those who have played in the SA psl. Surely you dont have to go thru the psl to make it to europe.

You know what as much as I am happy about this development there is one issue i have with this report, Mbola only got to England on Sunday and now on tuesday we are told he has signed. Even if he was good within a matter of hours of trials I mean the time seems a bit too short. Anyway there is a possibility that he was a target even before he got to England.

This is good for Zambian soccer, the more we have in Europe, the more news we make in those soccer circles, the more attention we will attract fro the scouts. 1m should make him the most expensive Zambian player. Tottenham Hotspur in £1m deal for Zambia teen star Emmanuel Mbola? Never heard of him, says Harry Redknapp
By Sportsmail Reporter Last updated at 1:24 PM on 23rd February 2010 Mail online
Harry Redknapp is baffled by reports claiming that Tottenham Hotspur have signed Zambia teen sensation Emmanuel Mbola.
The north London club were said to be closing in on a £1million deal for the left-back, who, despite being just 16, has 20 caps and was the youngest player at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite being just 16, Mbola has already won 20 caps for his country and was the youngest player at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

But Redknapp insists Mbola is not on his radar – and doesn’t even seem to know where the Pyunik Yerevan player is from!
‘I don’t know him,’ said the Spurs boss. ‘We had two kids here from Nigeria training, but I don’t know anything about a boy from Angola (sic).
‘Maybe the academies have brought him in, but he certainly is not training with the first team.’
Mbola qualifies for a European work permit and is also said to have been attracting interest from West Ham United.

this makes a bit of sense to me…copied from http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk

TOTTENHAM are set to sign the youngest player at the recent African Cup of Nations – Emmanuel Mbola.

The Zambia international did enough in Angola to impress Spurs scouts and a deal has been struck to take the 16-year-old to White Hart Lane.

Despite his tender years, Mbola has already won 20 caps for his country and the left-back was outstanding in the quarter-final defeat to Nigeria.

Spurs have moved quickly for the teenager, beating off competition from his old club West Ham, and the transfer is set to take place during the close season.

Mbola is currently with Pyunik Yerevan but the Armenian club are not standing in the way of a dream move.

Tottenham are yet to confirm any details of the proposed switch but sources claim the North Londoners have won the race to sign the promising defender.

Indeed, Harry Redknapp has indicated the deal is one that his academy coaches would look after.

Redknapp said: “I don’t know him.

“We had two kids here from Nigeria training, but I don’t know anything about a boy from Angola.

“Maybe the academy have brought him in, but he certainly is not training with the first team.”

Redknapp has also confirmed that England winger Aaron Lennon has suffered a setback in his bid for a first-team return.

The flying wide man has a slight tear in his groin and will be sidelined for at least another couple of weeks.

“Hopefully, it will get sorted out and he will be back soon,” added the Spurs boss.

  77. Logic on Tue, 23rd Feb 2010 5:31 PM

Zamfoot is simply reporting a story as seen on one of the UK papers, lets not shoot the messenger. Reporters have ways of finding out information before it gets released to the general public so I can not completely rule this move out just yet. If this doesnt work out, we know that he hammers are after the boy and truth be told, Rednapp may miss out one of the most prolific players to come out of southern Africa if he passes up on Mbola. The future is limitless for this boy and I don’t think he has even reached his full potencial. Good luck my man

  78. mr chicboy on Tue, 23rd Feb 2010 5:33 PM

the story can still be very true coz the spurs academy has its own budget and can buy it own players. obviously he has signed for the academy which as long as he goes on loan its ok

Whats this nonsense about HR applying to the Tanzanian coaching job as per Lusaka times? Is this the big African team he had in mind? If there’s any truth to this, I think he needs to be let go cause clearly his heart is not in Zambia. We do not need these unnecessary distractions

Redknap is a fool If I were Mbola I’d look at signing for West Ham

Redknapp has been accused of accepting “bungs” or payments over player transfers in the past so mebbe he’s not getting a cut here, lol! Then he denies knowing anything about a player from “Angola.” Obviously, even though he’s the manager, he doesn’t have all his facts. In any case, unless you’re talking about high profile players coming straight into the first team, the manager may not be entirely involved with player movement, especially youngsters like Mbola. That’s the job of the club’s sporting director. So the Mbola to Spurs story may not be entirely baseless.

@ M from France: That’s based on a report from the Lusaka Times. What publication is that?
If it’s true, either (a) they are offering more money than FAZ or (b) he loves water sports. I do. I’d take the beach, surf and warm water of dry land any day :)

Redknapp is not known for grooming young talent. I would be very excited if he was signing for Arsene Wenger. What happened to Giovani Dos Santos the young Mexican starlet that played for FC Barcelona? The boy is a star for the Mexican National team but is non existant at Spurs. I see another case here of rushing to cash in on Mbola based on his AFCON performance when he is not yet ready to play in the EPL. Maybe West Ham is a better option in my opinion. I think he has a better chance of continuing his good development at Pyunik where he might play champions league football. The boy should remain at his present club for another season and add champions league football experience to his resume which will market his skills to many more european teams.

West Ham have Ilunga, very good Congolese left back. He’s a bigger version of Mbola.
Arsenal would be the perfect fit for him, but of course, they have Glichy.

the whole mbola thing are just rumours and am shocked that the spurs manager is even saying he does not even know Mbola the ‘player from Angola’ according to another british newspaper. mind you the english news papers are fool of these rumour daily. eg. one paper last week reported that torres and steve G both of liverpool fc are going to man city for 130million pounds. everyone knows that it not true

‘I don’t know him,’ said the Spurs boss. ‘We had two kids here from Nigeria training, but I don’t know anything about a boy from Angola (sic).
‘Maybe the academy have brought him in, but he certainly is not training with the first team.’
Mbola qualifies for a European work permit and is

My dear gb if you actually watch EPL you will know that Harry Redknapp is one of the best coaches at turning clubs around, and what he has done with Tothenham since taking over from Juande Ramos has been absolutely amazing so I don’t see how he is a failure.
