New signing Stoppila Sunzu and his Zambian compatriot Given Singuluma both scored as TP Mazembe Englebert of the Democratic Republic of Congo won the African Super Cup with a 2-0 triumph over Stade Malien on Sunday.
Last year’s African Champions League winners, enjoying home advantage, took the lead when Sunzu headed home from a corner on the quarter hour mark.
Singuluma came on as a second-half substitute to score a second 10 minutes from full time. This was Singuluma’s third goal in his two matches after scoring a brace against Ocean FC in a league game last week.
Chipolopolo centre-half Hichani Himonde started at the back with Sebastian Mwansa in midfield but the latter was replaced in the second half.
It was the first time either club had competed in the Super Cup. A new-look Malian team contained few of the players who helped them win last year’s African Confederation Cup.
Tunisia
Prodigal son Fwayo Tembo made his first start of the season for Etoile du Sahel in the 1-1 draw. Fwayo ‘did very well’ on the flanks in the absence of Ghanian Eric Asamoah who is injured. it now looks like the duo will battle it out for a starting place in the team.
On his return from AWOL, Fwayo scored a goal in a reserve game two weeks and with another string of impressive performances in training sessions prompted the coach to draft the former Edusport in the starting line up.
Georgia
Chisamba Lungu played in midfield for Baia Zugdidi and helped it to a 1-0 win over Samtredia. Chisamba played the full game though he picked up a knock. Baia is two points clear of relegation and a win over arch-rivals Gangra next weekend will definitely help their cause.
Finland
Promoted side AC Oulu beat Haka 2-0 in a league Cup. Dominic Yobe and his brother Donewell played.
Germany
Arminia Bielefeld lost 2-1 at home to MSV Duisburg to loose ground on the promotion chase. Chris Katongo started on the flank. This was the second game Katongo played after the AFCON cup. Bielefeld has now 40 points from 23 games.
Elsewhere in the 2. Bundesliga, Andrew Sinkala played the full match as his club Augsburg collected maximum poiints over Hansa Rostock via a 1-0 win. Augsburg is now third on the log in the playoff position with 44 points. Sinkala played in midfield.
Holland
Jacob Mulenga played 90 minutes for Utrecht as they ended a seven game winless streak with a 2-0 away win over NAC Breda.
France
Jonas Sakuwaha came off the bench in the 70th minutes for Lorient but his club lost 1-0 to Nice in the French Ligue 1 game.
Israel
William Njobvu helped Hapoel Kyrat to a 3-0 win while Justine Zulu’s Bnei Lod played to a 1-1 draw in the second tier. Emmanuel Mayuka and Maccabi Tev Aviv will be in action today.
South Africa
There was only two games in the PSL, Isaac Chansa was impressive in the attacking role though he could have done better in the final third as Orlando Pirates played to a goalless draw with Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby.
Clifford Mulenga started on the right flank for Black Aces in another goalless draw with Bloem. Celtic. Clifford lacked composure and showed a bit of selfish just outside the 18 yard penalty box on more three occasion.

Great to see Given Singuluma getting back to football inhj scoring terms. Good start Sunzu but for me the news of the year is certainly Fwayo Tembo’s ‘resurrection.’ It is like sweet music to my ears.
Of course, disciplined lads particularly William Njobvu deserve credit for being so professional. Justin Zulu must continue chomping at the bit. He will get his chance. Isaac uis getting regular game time at Pirates after his step down from Europe.
Things are looking up for the Zambian national soccer team with the likes of Sakuwaha also getting game time of some sort. I hope Kalaba sorts out ‘his ghosts.’
And with the draw out for the AFCON 2012 out, it is time we quickly put the coaching dilemma to bed.
Preps must hit top gear NOW!

Felix katongo also featured for sundowns on friday in their 3-3 draw with swallows,he hit the cross bar in the closing minutes, the game was a continuation of tuesdays match that was abandoned due to bad light..
What position is stopilla sunzu playing at TP?i hope its in central defence because he plays better there than in midfield,

Forever young: Nigerian football’s age-old problem
Nwankwo Kanu is 42 and Taribo West, whose career ended two years ago, is in his late fifties, say bloggers in Nigeria
Jay-Jay Okocha in action for Nigeria during qualifying for the 2006 World Cup.
Nwankwo Kanu’s official age is 33 but his real age is 42. Obafemi Martins is not 25 but 32. Jay-Jay Okocha was 10 years older than his “official” age throughout his career. And Taribo West, whose playing career ended only two years ago, is in his late fifties.
Who says so? A stream of bloggers on some of Nigeria’s most popular websites, in response to comments made after the country’s timid effort in last month’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Failure to win that trophy is nearly always considered a scandal in the continent’s most populous nation but Nigeria’s latest misadventure in the tournament triggered a particularly explosive condemnation back home.
It started when a former manager of a leading Nigerian club told the Lagos Guardian: “What happened in Angola is a confirmation of what has been happening in the past where most of our players falsified their age during competition. Most of the players are beyond the age they professed and this made it impossible for them to withstand the pace of teams like Zambia and Benin.”
It also led to an entertaining discussion that shows no sign of abating as the Nigerians, who have three months to prepare for the World Cup, reacted to the criticism by sacking the coach. “Our boys are old, we are paying the price for age cheating,” said Ken Anugweje, a former national team doctor and board member of the Nigerian Football Federation.
Suspicions about true ages of some Nigerian footballers date back 20 years. Fifa banned Nigeria from all international fixtures for two years after finding that the birth dates of three of their players in the 1988 Olympics were different from ones used by the same players in previous tournaments.
A year later Pelé famously declared “an African team will definitely win the World Cup by the turn of the century” after watching seemingly promising Nigerian youngsters lift the Under-17 World Cup and reach the final of the Under-20 competition. How was Pelé to know that the so-called Under-20s of 1989 were so old that, in the words of George Onmonya on nigeriavillagesquare.com, “most of our players have now retired and become grandpas”?
Nigeria have a rich tradition of seemingly promising youngsters who mysteriously fail to fulfil their potential. Phillip Osondu was the best player at the 1987 Under-17 World Cup, after which he was snapped up by Anderlecht, only to drift out of the game and into janitorial work after questions were raised about his real age.
The star of Nigeria’s finalists at the 2001 Under-17 competition went on to become officially the third-youngest player to appear in the senior World Cup when he started the 0-0 draw with England in 2002. But that was as good as it got for Femi Opabunmi, who by 2005 was playing part-time football in the French lower leagues.
A trawl through the blogosphere makes for intriguing reading. “A friend of mine who once played in the Nigerian league told me his real age was 34 but his football age was 21,” wrote Onmonya. “You can walk into any immigration office in Nigeria today, forge documents at the nearby business centre, change your name, place of birth, date of birth, pay 7,000-10,000 naira instead of the official price of about 5,500 for an international passport and within hours you have completed the whole process.” A new passport, a new person – and if you are a footballer, a younger one.
A former employee of the British embassy in Nigeria told Observer Sport that when visa applicants complained to him about having their applications rejected, he would reply: “Well don’t talk to me about it, I’m dead.” He would respond to their looks of puzzlement by pointing to the wall behind him, on which hung his death certificate, purchased for a small fee from a Lagos supplier. Fifa reckon they have finally come up with a foolproof way of determining real age. Ahead of last year’s Under-17 World Cup in, as it happened, Nigeria, the governing body announced that players would be subjected to wrist scans using magnetic resonance imaging, and this would determine their true age.
That led some countries to undertake precautionary scans beforehand. The results were never announced, but Nigeria suddenly discarded 15 squad members, while Gambia omitted 11 of the 18 who had helped them to victory in the African Under-17 championship a few months earlier. Reports claim that retrospective analyses of the previous three Under-17 World Cups showed more than a third of all players were too old.

Ba Muzo and Sibs I’ve got to agree, the news on Fwayo is just so sweet. It was heartbreaking all the stories that came out about the lad but now it seems he is working on getting his career back on track. Isaac getting game time is also a really good thing though underground info is that it is drawing some tension in the Pirates camp. Apparently Teko Modise is not happy about being shifted to the wing and Isaac taking up the central midfield role. Teko has apparently even gone AWOL. Isaac is still playing really good football and I see him being one of our focal points n the qualifiers.

I think these qualifers are a bit funny to me. Why in the hell do we have to play teams like Comoros? CAF could you please let Libya, Mozambique and Comoros play each with the winner meeting Zambia for a place at the next AFCON. With all respect for Comoros,do we need to waste our time, money in flying in players from Europe and SA just to play Comoros twice. This beats me. I do not rate the Comoros and I have never heard of them regarding football until now.
Can someone tell me about these Comoros???
Mabbwana on Mon, 22nd Feb 2010 2:20 PM
Yes, its so good to hear that Fwayo is back. Being Away for that long and going back to be given gametime shows what a massive talent he is. I hope he now puts his head to the game.
Its now really tight for us, Sunzu is playing in midfield at club yet he seems most likely to be the prefered centre back for us. I wish something could be done about this. It would help the lad alot if he could adapt to the same position at both club and country.
I watched Isaac and am glad he is still playing well.

With the way things are moving for Zambian players I feel HR or who ever is going to coach the team will have a luxury problem. With so many playing it will mean competition will become more stiff and only the best shall be picked.
As for Fwayo I will have to wait and see how long he stays in Tunisia, of course I hope he behaves this time around and learns to the proper way of dealing with his issues
I feel Given and Sunzu may end up in Europe, Katumbu knows very well what he is doing. He is buying all the best players from Zambia, Zimbabwe etc. This guy means business

@Justice Kafusha…I oways enjoy your comments on Zamfoot, but I think u go it all wrong here? Underation is what kills us sometimes. The fact that we dont knw much about Comoros is what can sink us! Did u knw that Zambia seem to do well with stronger feared sides than against small teams? Does Zanzibar ring anybells to u? I think we need to take all our games serious and win the group convincingly so that we are seeded again at Afcon. We need to stop qualifyin on mathematical grounds all the time!
I am glad our players are doing fine abroad, I hope FAZ will round them up for the next friendlies, and try out chisamba and Fwayo, i think we need one fast winder to partner Kalaba or Feligo.

Ba Justice becareful. As someone has already pointed out we spectacularly failed to beat Zanzibar and i also wish to remind you that we have been beaten by Swaziland recently-asomething that was a near taboo a few years ago. We should be extremely careful and a 100% clean sheet during the preliminaries counts for nothing at the actual finals. The late Ben ‘Pabili’ Bamfuchile did it a few years ago and we were among the first teams to head home. There are no more small teams in football anymore.@Justice Kafusha

Five Of The Best
Senegalese striker Mamadou NiangFebruary 22, 2010
Mickael Tavares
Born in France and eligible for both the Cape Verde Islands and Senegal before choosing the latter, Tavares has been a steady performer for struggling Nurnberg in the German Bundesliga this season. And he put in a fine display to help his side to a surprise 1-1 draw with table-topping Bayern Munich at the weekend to further enhance his reputation.
Mama Niang
The Senegal striker is becoming a regular feature of this column, but when you gauge his brilliance week in, week out, he just can’t be ignored! He scored a hat-trick in the 3-1 success over inform Nancy on Sunday to move to the top of the goalscorers charts in France with 14. He has now scored in four consecutive matches in Ligue 1 and Europe, having also netted in the 3-1 win over FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Europa League in midweek.
Didier Drogba
English Premiership leaders Chelsea had to survive a few scares at Wolverhampton Wanderers before the brilliant of Cote d’Ivoire striker Didier Drogba saw them collect the three points. Drogba scored a brace in his side’s 2-0 win to move them four points clear at the top of the table. It takes his Premiership goals tally for the season to 19, just two behind leader Wayne Rooney.
Given Singuluma
The Zambian hitman may not have seen any action for his country at the recent 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, but he is a growing influence at African champions TP Mazembe from the DR Congo. And he scored again on Sunday to help them to a first-ever African Super Cup triumph as they beat Stade Malien in the showpiece match in Lubumbashi.
Obinna Nsofor
The Nigerian international keeps putting in fine performances week in, week out for unfancied Malaga in the Spanish La Liga, and he was rewarded this past weekend with the winning goal for his side in the 2-1 success at home to Espanyol. He quietly goes about his business, but whoever the new Super Eagles coach will be, will surely be keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old.
Justice Kafusha on Mon, 22nd Feb 2010 4:44 PM
My thinking is that teams like Comoros and the likes should have played each other in the prelimanaries and thereafter 7 groups of 3 teams with the top 2 from each group qualifying. I am looking at this from the economical point of view and the number of games to be played

Mbesuma is given ultimatum
Moroka Swallows boss Rainer Zobel has told hitman Collins Mbesuma to shape up or ship out.
The Zambian international has scored only twice in 12 starts for the Birds this season and irked Zobel after returning late to the team following the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola.
The German-born coach told Football365.co.za after the 3-3 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday night at the Super stadium that the 26-year-old needs to work harder.
“Mbesuma if he is fit to play he will play. He is not injured but he is not fit to play. I don’t care about big names. Mbesuma has to work hard at training to play, but at the moment he is not in my plans,” Zobel said.
The Birds mentor was not happy with his midfield after allowing Sundowns to come from 2-0 down to end up drawing 3-3 following the resumption of the tie on 35 minutes after it was abandoned on Wednesday night due to floodlights failure.
“Our midfield were not comfortable as they were on Wednesday and that’s was the key of our downfall today.
“Sundowns deserve to win today there is no question about that. On Wednesday we were the better team and today they were the better team. It was difficult for us because we came back from Mauritius (where they played a CAF Confederations Cup match) on Tuesday afternoon and the following day Wednesday we came here and we don’t finish the match like we planned. This thing of travelling is not easy,” he concluded.

Brother Never, good article on Nigerian players and their true ages. Your information about Taribo West tallies with what a Nigerian friend of mine once told me. He said that he’d seen Taribo before a game shaking hands with then Nigerian President Yakubu Gowan. Now for you young people there, Gowan was Nigerian leader in the mid 1970s!! So even if Taribo was 16 or 17 then, he must be an old man now.

The player of the award should be between kennedy chola, patrick kabamba and joseph sitali..they may not have won the league but the team of the year award should be given to either city of lusaka or choma eagles..fordson kabole went 17 games unbeaten for power towards the end of the season so he should also be a contender for coach of the year…

It seems he will never listen to anybody. We should just let him be and do as he wants. Maybe he has earned enough to live for the rest of his life. He has been the talk for the past many months and nothing good has come out.
If he goes back to play in Zambia then that will be that, he may end up like Litana and company but that is his life. He had a chance to be a big star but he blew it up and mind you chances do not hang on trees like oranges or mangoes, they come and go. The boy will regret just like the other former players. I just hope our young players take this as a lesson and start to listen and not behave like they know everyting
