Zanaco leaves for Uganda

February 9th, 2010

CHAMPIONS league envoys Zanaco Football Club today leave for Uganda ahead of their first leg preliminary round match against Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on Friday.

In an interview, club chairman David Kaunda said the team will leave this morning aboard Kenya Airways.

Kaunda said the team was leaving early so that they could acclimatise before the game on Saturday.

“You know there is the issue of acclimatizing and there are rules under CAF that a team should adhere to, that is why we have decided to leave early,” Kaunda said.

He expressed confidence the team would perform well considering there adequate preparation.
Zanaco face URA this weekend before hosting their opponents at Sunset Stadium on February 27./AM

FORMER national team coach Colonel Brightwell Banda has said the state of Zambian football is hurting the country’s class that experienced glorious days.

Col Banda, who guided Zambia to her maiden East and Central Africa Championship (CECAFA) title and was part of the bronze-winning technical bench at the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations in Libya, said Zambia’s target should now be to win the continental title and qualify to the World Cup.

He said the country should not aim for nothing less than what it had achieved in the past.

Col Banda said a quarterfinal place like the case at the recent Africa Cup of Nations did not excite him.
“It pains me so much that we now consider getting to the quarterfinal as an achievement.

“This time we should be winning the trophy and going to the World Cup,” he said.
Col Banda said it was sad that coaches who played a key role in Zambian football had been sidelined.

He said the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) should embrace veteran coaches as part of the development process.

Col Banda said the coaches of his class had good ideas to contribute in re-establishing Zambia as a footballing force on the continent.

“Today, I’m looked at as nothing because we keep bringing novices in the administration of football, people without experience,” he observed.

Col Banda said during his time as national team trainer, he worked closely with Republic President Rupiah Banda who at the time was FAZ vice-president in charge of the technical department.

“We worked extremely well with President Banda and I became the first Zambian coach to sign a professional contract. We were beating teams like Cameroon 4-1 at Independence Stadium,” he said.

Col Banda said he had made submission to both FAZ and the government in previous years on how a strong youth structure would help develop Zambian football.

He, however, expressed disappointment that his paper only went as far as gathering dust on the shelves.

Col Banda, whose retain to active coaching in 2005 was dented with a humiliating 9-2 goal aggregate bashing of Red Arrows by Nigeria’s Enyimba in the CAF Champions League, said the remedy to Zambian football was in establishing a strong youth structure.

He advised the media to give the correct picture of Zambian football.
Col Banda accused the media of contributing to the downfall of the sport in the country.

“I don’t expect praises from the media but you have totally been unfair in the way you have reflected Zambian football.

“Draw a graph on Zambian coaches and their performance and see where I will be,” he said.
Col Banda, who has since relocated to Ndola rural, expressed gratitude that some people appreciated his contribution to the country’s top sport.

“It is only sad that other people think we never played a role in football in Zambia, they don’t want us anywhere near the game,” he complained.

Col Banda said it was impossible for football to develop without tapping into contributors of past success.

I personally believe that solid youth structures have been a big downturn factor in the whole of Southern Africa and not just Zambia. Even in South Arica with all the sponsorship and infrastructure they still dont have a solid youth system in place. The youth system of Ivory coast has been a real eye opener I hope for many an African country. To think that their youth system has produced some of the biggest stars of the game today can be considered an ultimate achievement. There is way too much focus on money over everything else. If somebody like Brightwell presents a paper on youth development and at about the same time a big European club shows interest in a player, all focus will be centred on selling that player and the paper then heads to the bin. Reason for this, selling the player will fatten somebodys pocket, focusing on youth deveopment wont. Right now were is the U17 team if there is still one.

Zanaco have raised the bar for sure, they are taking the tournament as serious as serious can get. Training well, acclamatizing in due time, they have got a solid coach. i think they will do us proud. I truly think they will go far.

Zanaco took this one quite serious. They did some shopping off season to boost their squad which is what most of us were advocating for. They were in Mongu for a training camp were eye witnesses say it was a major physical work-out in the Barotse sands.

Record has it that everytime Wada has brought his team to the West he has gone on to win the league.

I second Col B. Banda’s Sentiments about the Media in Zambia on how they report Football rumor. More especially the generation of Mid Eighties and Nineties who have driven by wrong Data in terms of who is who in Zambia Football? We do not want to speculate or be courted that we have a grudge over our colleagues, but the matter of fact is that there are only two gentlemen in Zambia who did contribute a lot in Football. i.e. Kalu & Ucar which should not be the case. Some of our friends who support Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal & Liverpool do not know this Col B. Banda all they know is Kalusha Ucar. The media we are appealing to you that be patriot in the way you dish out information. The problems of us Zambian is that we are too selfish in all aspects of our lives, we do not want our friends to surpass us. All the Best to ZANACO FC, Please give u the Photo of the Current Team for ZANACO.

    Kalaba AWOL at Zamalek
By CHISHALA MUSONDA and VICTOR KUMWENDA

EGYPTIAN giants Zamalek are still awaiting the arrival of Zambia midfielder Rainford Kalaba to join the team after securing a six-month loan.

Kalaba, who is on the Braga books until 2013, is alleged to have disappeared after signing his deal with the Egyptians on reasons that he had to collect personal belongings from Portugal.

The former Afrisport and Zesco United midfielder has been signed on a US$100,000 (about K450 million) loan from Braga until the end of the season.
Kalaba has, however, been spotted in Ndola.

But when contacted on his mobile phone yesterday, Kalaba’s colleague answered claiming the Zambian international was attending to other issues before cutting the line. When called later, the phone went unanswered.

Kalaba’s agent Graham Heydon of Ramp Sports Management of Canada confirmed yesterday in an interview that they are trying to locate the player so that he can join Zamalek.

Heydon said he initially believed Kalaba was in South Africa enroute to Portugal but attempts to contact him have proved futile.

Kalaba, 23, is said not to be interested in playing his football in Egypt, contrary to his earlier commitment of wanting more game-time away from Braga by moving to Zamalek.

Ramp and Zamalek, the club expected to be paying Kalaba a monthly wage of US$20,000, are making frantic efforts to locate the player.

Kalaba’s good display helped the Chipolopolo reach the quarter-finals of the 2010 Africa Cup for the first time in 14 years.

His impressive play tempted Zamalek to lure him on loan on the closing day of the summer international transfer window.

Kalaba has had two loan spells at Portuguese second division side Gil Vicente and Uniao Desportiva de Leiria.

Last week, Zamalek marketing director Khaled Refaat announced that they were awaiting an international transfer certificate for their new signing to enable him play in Monday’s Premier League match against ENNIP.

    Zamalek won the game 2-0.

“We are yet to receive the transfer certificate although we paid the transfer fees,” Refaat said.
“I hope that Braga will send it to us as soon as possible,” he said.

Mabbwana i think the club pushed him to go. When your team sends you on loan mostly you don’t have a choice. Players are faced with this situation unless you ask for a transfer or the club decides to release you then you have the power of choice.

Am very concerned on the plight of our players. It is like Zambian players have been labeled average by some factions. I honestly dont understand how in the name of football Kalaba would be joining Zamalek at the best we have ever seen him. We all know his display at AFCON was better than Alexander Song.
My heart is at pains rigth now honestly the Zambian players currently in the best leagues are Jacob, Chris, Mayuka & now William. The rest of the guys are stuck in SA, Angola & now suddenly Congo DR is the new heaven. Gents honestly are we that average? Or our Zambia player agents are not playing it fair. FAZ & any other people can surely do something positive for our players’ trade. There are players in Italy, Spain & England whom Kalaba is ten times better. I am with him for feeling lowly placed. Somebody do something this guy is currently the anchor if Zambia is to get to a better position in football. Zamalek is no good for him he needs better exposure. Am not down playing Zamalek but merely looking at the best for Kalaba. This goes for all our players seeking refuge in all sorts of strange football places.
