CHAMPIONS league envoys Zanaco Football Club today leave for Uganda ahead of their first leg preliminary round match against Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on Friday.
In an interview, club chairman David Kaunda said the team will leave this morning aboard Kenya Airways.
Kaunda said the team was leaving early so that they could acclimatise before the game on Saturday.
“You know there is the issue of acclimatizing and there are rules under CAF that a team should adhere to, that is why we have decided to leave early,” Kaunda said.
He expressed confidence the team would perform well considering there adequate preparation.
Zanaco face URA this weekend before hosting their opponents at Sunset Stadium on February 27./AM

FORMER national team coach Colonel Brightwell Banda has said the state of Zambian football is hurting the country’s class that experienced glorious days.
Col Banda, who guided Zambia to her maiden East and Central Africa Championship (CECAFA) title and was part of the bronze-winning technical bench at the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations in Libya, said Zambia’s target should now be to win the continental title and qualify to the World Cup.
He said the country should not aim for nothing less than what it had achieved in the past.
Col Banda said a quarterfinal place like the case at the recent Africa Cup of Nations did not excite him.
“It pains me so much that we now consider getting to the quarterfinal as an achievement.
“This time we should be winning the trophy and going to the World Cup,” he said.
Col Banda said it was sad that coaches who played a key role in Zambian football had been sidelined.
He said the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) should embrace veteran coaches as part of the development process.
Col Banda said the coaches of his class had good ideas to contribute in re-establishing Zambia as a footballing force on the continent.
“Today, I’m looked at as nothing because we keep bringing novices in the administration of football, people without experience,” he observed.
Col Banda said during his time as national team trainer, he worked closely with Republic President Rupiah Banda who at the time was FAZ vice-president in charge of the technical department.
“We worked extremely well with President Banda and I became the first Zambian coach to sign a professional contract. We were beating teams like Cameroon 4-1 at Independence Stadium,” he said.
Col Banda said he had made submission to both FAZ and the government in previous years on how a strong youth structure would help develop Zambian football.
He, however, expressed disappointment that his paper only went as far as gathering dust on the shelves.
Col Banda, whose retain to active coaching in 2005 was dented with a humiliating 9-2 goal aggregate bashing of Red Arrows by Nigeria’s Enyimba in the CAF Champions League, said the remedy to Zambian football was in establishing a strong youth structure.
He advised the media to give the correct picture of Zambian football.
Col Banda accused the media of contributing to the downfall of the sport in the country.
“I don’t expect praises from the media but you have totally been unfair in the way you have reflected Zambian football.
“Draw a graph on Zambian coaches and their performance and see where I will be,” he said.
Col Banda, who has since relocated to Ndola rural, expressed gratitude that some people appreciated his contribution to the country’s top sport.
“It is only sad that other people think we never played a role in football in Zambia, they don’t want us anywhere near the game,” he complained.
Col Banda said it was impossible for football to develop without tapping into contributors of past success.

I personally believe that solid youth structures have been a big downturn factor in the whole of Southern Africa and not just Zambia. Even in South Arica with all the sponsorship and infrastructure they still dont have a solid youth system in place. The youth system of Ivory coast has been a real eye opener I hope for many an African country. To think that their youth system has produced some of the biggest stars of the game today can be considered an ultimate achievement. There is way too much focus on money over everything else. If somebody like Brightwell presents a paper on youth development and at about the same time a big European club shows interest in a player, all focus will be centred on selling that player and the paper then heads to the bin. Reason for this, selling the player will fatten somebodys pocket, focusing on youth deveopment wont. Right now were is the U17 team if there is still one.
Zanaco have raised the bar for sure, they are taking the tournament as serious as serious can get. Training well, acclamatizing in due time, they have got a solid coach. i think they will do us proud. I truly think they will go far.

Zanaco took this one quite serious. They did some shopping off season to boost their squad which is what most of us were advocating for. They were in Mongu for a training camp were eye witnesses say it was a major physical work-out in the Barotse sands.

I second Col B. Banda’s Sentiments about the Media in Zambia on how they report Football rumor. More especially the generation of Mid Eighties and Nineties who have driven by wrong Data in terms of who is who in Zambia Football? We do not want to speculate or be courted that we have a grudge over our colleagues, but the matter of fact is that there are only two gentlemen in Zambia who did contribute a lot in Football. i.e. Kalu & Ucar which should not be the case. Some of our friends who support Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal & Liverpool do not know this Col B. Banda all they know is Kalusha Ucar. The media we are appealing to you that be patriot in the way you dish out information. The problems of us Zambian is that we are too selfish in all aspects of our lives, we do not want our friends to surpass us. Kalaba AWOL at Zamalek
By CHISHALA MUSONDA and VICTOR KUMWENDA
EGYPTIAN giants Zamalek are still awaiting the arrival of Zambia midfielder Rainford Kalaba to join the team after securing a six-month loan.
Kalaba, who is on the Braga books until 2013, is alleged to have disappeared after signing his deal with the Egyptians on reasons that he had to collect personal belongings from Portugal.
The former Afrisport and Zesco United midfielder has been signed on a US$100,000 (about K450 million) loan from Braga until the end of the season.
Kalaba has, however, been spotted in Ndola.
But when contacted on his mobile phone yesterday, Kalaba’s colleague answered claiming the Zambian international was attending to other issues before cutting the line. When called later, the phone went unanswered.
Kalaba’s agent Graham Heydon of Ramp Sports Management of Canada confirmed yesterday in an interview that they are trying to locate the player so that he can join Zamalek.
Heydon said he initially believed Kalaba was in South Africa enroute to Portugal but attempts to contact him have proved futile.
Kalaba, 23, is said not to be interested in playing his football in Egypt, contrary to his earlier commitment of wanting more game-time away from Braga by moving to Zamalek.
Ramp and Zamalek, the club expected to be paying Kalaba a monthly wage of US$20,000, are making frantic efforts to locate the player.
Kalaba’s good display helped the Chipolopolo reach the quarter-finals of the 2010 Africa Cup for the first time in 14 years.
His impressive play tempted Zamalek to lure him on loan on the closing day of the summer international transfer window.
Kalaba has had two loan spells at Portuguese second division side Gil Vicente and Uniao Desportiva de Leiria.
Last week, Zamalek marketing director Khaled Refaat announced that they were awaiting an international transfer certificate for their new signing to enable him play in Monday’s Premier League match against ENNIP.
Zamalek won the game 2-0.
“We are yet to receive the transfer certificate although we paid the transfer fees,” Refaat said.
“I hope that Braga will send it to us as soon as possible,” he said.

Chamz i agree with you this boy will be frustarted and might end up going down ku Egypt. If he goes let him just stay for a short period. Look what happened to Fwayo in Tunisia and Junior Agogo at Zamalek the guy could not even make it in the Ghana team in Angola.
No wonder he is hesitant to go. Good luck young Man i think you derserve better you are a talented player. Remember talent is never enough though.
Sibs on Wed, 10th Feb 2010 10:37 AM
Mabbwana i think the club pushed him to go. When your team sends you on loan mostly you don’t have a choice. Players are faced with this situation unless you ask for a transfer or the club decides to release you then you have the power of choice.

Am very concerned on the plight of our players. It is like Zambian players have been labeled average by some factions. I honestly dont understand how in the name of football Kalaba would be joining Zamalek at the best we have ever seen him. We all know his display at AFCON was better than Alexander Song.
My heart is at pains rigth now honestly the Zambian players currently in the best leagues are Jacob, Chris, Mayuka & now William. The rest of the guys are stuck in SA, Angola & now suddenly Congo DR is the new heaven. Gents honestly are we that average? Or our Zambia player agents are not playing it fair. FAZ & any other people can surely do something positive for our players’ trade. There are players in Italy, Spain & England whom Kalaba is ten times better. I am with him for feeling lowly placed. Somebody do something this guy is currently the anchor if Zambia is to get to a better position in football. Zamalek is no good for him he needs better exposure. Am not down playing Zamalek but merely looking at the best for Kalaba. This goes for all our players seeking refuge in all sorts of strange football places.

Its becuase of this thing of European coaches stereotyping african players. This is especially the case in the English premiership. The french league is somewhat an exception in this regard. what I mean is if an English club needs or are looking for a skilled player with dribbling abilities, they will look to South America thats how guys like Robinho make it into their league. Only when they want strength, lts say they are looking for a big defender or big midfielder that they look to africa. I can name a huge number of defenders that are better than Yobo but in the premiership they will always prefer him becuase of his size. Thats the edge a playeer like Alex Song has over Kalaba basically his size and presumed strength because of his size. This thing of stereotyping players kills us here in central and southern africa becuase generally our players are pretty much on the small body size. Now the bad thing is that the stereotyping goes as far as regions and that again totally favours our west african brothers. So the coaches dont take too much time looking, they just look into west africa for that big player and south america for that skilfull player thats it. It always takes something extraordinarily special for a player from Southern Africa to make the big leagues, a Benni mcarthy type record or Mbeuma record before his downfall but west africans dont have to climb those sort of hieghts to make it. The selection playing field is not fairly balanced.

Your thought is true & quiet wise my man. Its sad that our morphology as Zambians is not doing us any favours. But I stil believe that we only need one opportunity in the big leagues. Kalaba can offer as much contribution to a team as good as Alonso or Fabrigus. We just need our players to believe in themselves and the agents to push big clubs more for better chances. Zambian players dispite being small have the flair.
Believe you me the day Zambia wil have a player or two at the level of Adebayo you will see what will happen to our game. Look at Togo it literaly come from the blues. Also look at the inspiration Kalu had on the team because of the level he was play at that time. Lets keep the support & faith flowing. And keep hoping for players like Jacob to break ground.

This Kalaba development is sad indeed. I can’t understand why he signed the contract in the first place. You can’t sign and then start second guessing yourself, at least show up and deal with things through your agent. These guys sometimes you have to wonder if they are under some sort of slave labour deal, I mean if the club made a deal with Zamalek at least see it through… 6 months at $20k/month is a small price to pay. Kalaba needs to think about the long term here…. see this Zamalek thing through and then back to business.
Nice to see Felix getting some interest in him, also good to see Mayuka scoring. Yaba ba Chamanga will be on the move at 30!!! I guess it is better late than never… he definately brought much needed fire power to the Zambia frontline wish he had been called throughout the qualifiers.

Im equally concerned with the newly found Congo destination for our players. It is not health I wish Kalaba could play for an European club not Zamaleki, becouse he will end up in UAE it may be good for his pocket but not his career. FAZ should help these players becouse they get so desperate waiting for an Ideal deal that may never come. Player Agent requirement of $100,000 makes people this side of africa not have agents that are from the same region to have a true heart for our players.
I wish our lads the best where ever nature dectates they should play as I look forwered to a time I will watch a Zambian play competitive football in EPL or Spain. I almost became a pompey fan thank God I did not have the patience to just watch our man play an aggregate of 24 minutes in as many games for his former club.

Subject : Uganda’s URA plot for Zanaco
Message :
Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) FC have pitched camp 40km out of the capital city Kampala ahead of their Orange CAF Champions League preliminary first leg clash against Zambia’s Zanaco on Friday at Namboole stadium.
“We are plotting seriously to have a comfortable win at home before traveling to Lusaka for the return leg,” said URA’s coach Moses Basena. He said he is optimistic his new signings Augustine Nsumba and Jimmy Kidega will be fully fit for the encounter.
Basena, a former Ugandan international told Cafonline.com that they have stepped up training to a double sessions. He said although they don’t know some much about the Zambian side, he is aware of Zambia’s general football approach.
After recovering from injury URA are assured of their lead striker Henry Kisekka starting the match, although midfielder Emmanuel Balyejusa and striker Hamis Kiiza are a doubt.
It will be the second time in about three years that URA takes on a Zambian side in the competition, after they fell to ZESCO United in the 2008 edition.
The Zambians are expected to arrive tonight (Tuesday) ahead of the Friday clash. The two sides will meet in the return leg at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka February 27 and the winner on aggregate will advance to the first-round against Cote d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosa next month.

TP Mazembe has financial muscle that will compensate these guys more than they can ever dream to get in the local league in Zambia. The basic driving force behind our players ending up in places like Congo, Angola, etc is economics period. Katumbi is a shrewd business man and has lived in Zambia long enough to know the conditions that these guys play under. What you need to realize is that he is offering these guys contracts with cash up front while European teams at the very least are offering these guys trails with no solid prospects of being signed on. For this and only this reason, I see why these guys end up doing this. Sebastian Mwansa, Sunzu are guys that have attended countless trials without much success and with options ever dwindling, I don’t blame them for trying to make some money off of their talents before their legs tire out. We also need to realize that if TP Mazembe does well in Africa, doors could open up for these guys. In Kalaba’s case, he needs to honour his contract, 6 months is not a long time. Amir Zaki was just at Zamalek not to long ago after some time at Wigan. His time at Zamelek helped refocus him and now he’s back in Europe. This business of lack of professionalism on our players is bad for Zambian football cause it is the reason why players like Mbesuma, Emmanuel Zulu and to an extent Singuluma to mention a few find themselves in the situations they are in today. As fans, lets encourage these guys to be professional, show up to work, like everybody else and let you body of work do the talking for you.

Mwana it is indeed sad about singuluma. I for one thought that after the chan games when he wreaked havoic that he would be destined for better things. Even zamfoot the cheeky buggers did an april fool by sayung marselle had signed the chogobay that is given.
He is a playa who can play and has plenty potenetial!! But he is wasting it. To be honest he is more talented than both chamanga and jacob but the thing is they work hard and try and try so hard but this boy he likes to eat kapenta instead and sit on his god given talent. Mwana he could have been the next best thing but instead he is now rotting away. Which club is he even at? The Club in DR CONGO but remember he didnt even go to the world cup championshsips and now all our playas think that dr congo is the best play to go.
Mwana I thought that sunzuuu and hh would have signed for some europena club. There were many rumours about sunzuu but it is instread sad that they will waste time at these useless clubs. Is it not mwana? It is mwana!

The Botswana Football Association president David Fani has revealed that the governing body intends to bid for the right to host the 2016 African Nations Cup.he BFA could not put together a bid for this year’s event when it failed to gain government support in 2005.
The 2012 competition will be jointly host by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and the 2014 edition has been awarded to Libya.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) are seeking the agreement of Libya to bring forward the event to 2013, changing the tournament to every odd year, thus preventing it from being played in the same year as the World Cup and the European Championship.
This would mean the 2016 edition being rescheduled to January 201

Zanaco played some friendilies with Nkwazi and some teams. They have been training since December 2009. They also had a TEAM BUILDING lecture offered free of charge by Simataa at NASDEC (I would encourage other teams to swaloow their pride and get this chat, I,ve already arranged for my Nkana to get it next time they are in Lusaka). Wedson has tried to strengthen the team for you that follow Zambian Soccer closely:
1. Trinity Chalanshi Ex-Chingalika (Kitwe Utd) and Blades-a midfielder of sorts that will see no reason to play Thomas Nyirenda in his new role at AFCON that he did very well.
2. Macha-a unique striker that Rangers faithful will miss. When i saw the boy and if in safe hands has capable to don the National Team jersey.
3. Maybin Chishimba- perhaps the best left back never to have been noticed, but had stints at U-23 level due to perpetual movements-Blades and GBFC (oscillating!)
3. Venacious Mapande- plays well in a free role behind strikers (Ex-Chambishi).
What i envisage is that ZANACO through play based on team work may find it easy to fill the big void left by Congolese Patrick Kabamba (what a gem).
I have never supported ZANACO, but write them off at your own peril this season.!
