MTNFootball.com can again exclusively report that top officials of the Nigeria
Football Federation (NFF) have met with Zambia coach, Herve Renard, with a view to the Frenchman leading the Super Eagles to the World Cup in June. A top source informed MTNFootball.com Saturday afternoon: “NFF officials led by president Sani Lulu and Taiwo Ogunjobi met with Renard in Luanda to discuss the possibility of his joining Nigeria for the World Cup. “Also at this meeting was FIFA top official, Walter Gagg. It was a fruitful meeting. Hopefully something should come out of this. “Renard is excited to work with Nigeria, but asked the NFF officials to speed up their interest as he has also been courted by several other African teams.” The young French coach became a darling of several Nigeria officials here in Angola after his youthful and inexperienced Chipolopolo outclassed the Super Eagles in a Nations Cup quarterfinal even though they would go on to lose 5-4 on penalties to Nigeria after scores were tied at 0-0 after extra-time. “He has really won the approval of top officials here in Angola,” another source disclosed. Last week, Renard had told MTNFootball.com in an exclusive interview he would “trek from Angola to Nigeria” if that would get him the top Nigeria coaching job. Renard, was assistant to compatriot Claude Le Roy with Ghana two years ago. He moved to Zambia in May, 2008, on a two-year contract, which pays him a monthly salary of between $15,000 and $18,000. An impressed Zambia President, Rupiah Banda, promised at a reception for the country’s team on arrival from Angola that he will do everything to keep Renard.
Meanwhile, Jonas Sakuwaha has extented his contract by two years with his French side Lorient.

let him go and wish him all the luck.bear in mind that his salary was one the lowest in Africa and what makes you think he will hang on to this job.if faz were me i would very much thank him and wish him luck.every human being has to be ambitious at one point or the other and that’s what Renard is trying to do.if you happen to leave,go well and best of luck.porterfiled had to leave after 94 at a time when we needed him.the point is you can force someone to stay when their mind is set.
Georgia Russia on Sun, 31st Jan 2010 11:37 AM
he did what other coaches failed to do in 14 years and personally am going to miss him,how much do you have to pay the coaches you just mentioned (10pin dollar or 15dollar)do you know how much shehata gets in a month
Justice Kafusha on Sun, 31st Jan 2010 11:49 AM
I think HR has played his part, all we need to do now is to bring a coach who can take as a step forward, not someone who has to start from scratch. The team is there, we have most of the players we need. New findings are welcome as long as they can add value to the team
Good luck and thanks a lot HR. A big welcome to the new coach

that’s the way forward mudala, whoever will come should continue were Renard would have left,we don’t want a situation were you start from scratch. i believe we have a team and all we need is a captain, faz should decided whether we go local or for a foreigner,,but local coaches have failed us big time

He is just an average coach. Remember that we had to throw a lot of missiles on him to consider some players who made zambia tick. HR will be fired at Super Eagles possibily after a few friendlies.
Sibs on Sun, 31st Jan 2010 12:20 PM
Any normal human being would go for a job where the offering you more money and you can go far unless you not ambitious in Life. Though our team is going far also with the right Coach that is. The guy brought alot of good (positives) to our game than negatives. Though he was not perfect, none of us are !
I will miss him so will alot of the players. I wish him the best of luck. At the moment none of our local coaches are ready to take the team to the next level. It also looks like we don’t have the money to hire a ‘bigger’ Coach. Kaya ??

Renard has done a good job,if does leave then he would have left us with a better team than the one he found, when he came in our back four had joseph musonda, billy mwanza, kennedy nketani and clive hachilensa, but look at the back four today, its every coaches dream to lead a team to the world cup so they offer him the job,he would be mad not to accept it,personally i will miss herve renard,he is an interesting character..

To be frank,I have to give Renard hi-five! Lets face it,he has done what no body has in the past 14 years. I am a Nigerian dude engaged to a Zambian chick.Nigeria and Zambia are countries that have been known for producing “emerging talent”,but we have always lacked discipline and organisation – we got that from Renard,he will give it to Nigeria. He will be loved by few, hated by many but will deliver.
On his development area,he would need to work on his personality a bit.He has to go back to the “fundermentals of diplomacy”- really required for a coach managing a national team – especially in Africa. There is only one man that can get away with such cockiness – Jose Morinho”the special one”
Lastly, the only place that i would love to fault Renard would be his centre back selection.Hi chani Himoonde should had started the first match with no sentiments attached. What an emerging talent! He came in and made Yakubu look like a shadow of himself, steped up and took a free-kick from almost 35-40 yards with such a powerful shot even though it was not on target. His long range passes for a centre back are Beckham related,a true center back.

The writing was already on the wall. After some measure of success at afcon it was going to be hard to hold on to him. However we can still have continuity within our budget. Offer the job to beaumelle under renards conditions. Patrice actually has the same qualifications as renard – uefa b . I suspect patrice would be irrational not to accept such an offer. I also understand he is more offensive in approach.

If i am a coach, i would rather take a side to the world cup and be proud of that than jump on side that is already there thanks to someone else. For all the preaching HR did, i’m quite surprised he’s taking this approach, he’s going to have 5 months or less pull Nigeria together. He can’t start saying it takes time… Yes ambition is good, but allot of this seems a bit cutthroat and crazy, we’ll see HR in a years time.

Gentlemen. I think going forward, we need to kick FAZ exec out. With this exec no coach will suceed. If FAZ council has failed to kick out the exec, lets use soccer fan power. Boycot all league games in protest until FAZ resigns! Its time we claimed our place in African soccer. What we are lacking is leadership.
ALWAYS FRANK! on Sun, 31st Jan 2010 3:28 PM
I would not really classify Renard as a journey man . It will be difficult for the lad to refuse an offer from Nigeria for the following reasons:
1. If he becomes the Nigerian coach in South Africa 2010,his cv will be strongly spiced up
2. His salary package will be so tempting for him to stay in Zambia.
3. He is not Zambian!

He also knows and has worked with a number of our 2007 U-17 world cup winning squad. I dunno if Patrice is a good coach. I know he once was in charge for one match due to HRs refusal to travel with the team. Maybe we can retain his services as the physical trainer, lets not make the same mistake SA did with Santana. Shame we have no continuity when it comes to the coach, I think that is one of the main reasons we are where we are and not on top of Africa. Perhaps its time to start grooming a Zambian coach for the future, the choices are endless; Wedson, Janza, or even Chiyangi who did an excellent job this past season. Lucky Msiska who was part of a golden generation can also be a good choice, but we have to definately go back and look through his credentials..he would be a good choice as far as starting to groom a good coach…by grooming I mean let these guys coach the junior sides and let them be assistants to whoever it is..then when the time is right they can takeover.

I will be shedding no tears. Imagine a woman in a marriage saying other men are big and she would want them instead. The relationship was mutual. Renard can go if he so wishes. Zambia need to bring in a top quality coach. Not a riff raff. The physical trainer for me is very good we can maintain him if he so wishes as well as bringing a top drawer trainer from outside the country. Let us include 2 good local coaches on the bench so that next time we are not hit below the belt.
Kachisa on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 8:47 AM
Well Renard seems to be a determined young fellow but dtertmined is no gaurantee that one will achieve,it takes planning to get good results and i dont think Renard has planned enuff to get to the big stage of football. Not that I want to keep him for Zambia but he could have done well to try and renew his faith with Zambia and show the world wat he is capable of….All the best to Renard…

Big Steve from SA on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 9:45 AM
Something a bit off the topic, Chansa is officially back in the PSL. Talk about a step backwards:
Orlando Pirates have re-signed Zambian midfielder Isaac Chansa who has spent the past three seasons in Sweden with Helsingborgs.
Chansa, who is expected to start training with Pirates this morning, has signed a three-year contract with the Mighty Buccaneers and is available for selection when the Soweto giants take on SuperSport United in their Absa Premiership game at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.
Speaking to OPFC’s website, the Chipolopolo midfielder said he was excited about the prospect of wearing the famous black and white jersey in South Africa again.
“I am happy to be back home at Pirates. The club has always had a special place in my heart; therefore it was only natural to rejoin the team after my stint in Europe.”
Meanwhile Zimbabwean striker Benjamin Marere has since returned back home in Harare to re-join his club Dynamos after unsuccessful trials with Pirates.

Thanks for the info Big Steve. Helsingborgs did not renew his contract cos the Coach thought he was not worth it. If he was still that good he would still be in Sweden or somewhere in Europe. No wonder he can’t start for the Chipo boys.
Though i wish him all the best at Pirates but knowing these guys in S.A he has to work hard otherwise he will end up in Mvela league. If players like Kamwendo are finding it hard at Pirates, Isaac has his work cut out.
Alexander Liwana,RSA on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 10:23 AM
I also believe that we have quality players and any other coach can do wonders with the calibre of players with have got.I strongly feel that we had a team already when we humbled South Africa for the qualification of Afcon 2008 at their own ground with Patrick Phiri.Zambia could have done better if we had Patrick Phiri this time around because in 2008 Afcon we were the only side who managed to hold the Egyptians and gave them tough time.I will be happy if this big headed Renard goes so that we can have our own Zambian born coach like Patrick Phiri.
Big Steve from SA on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 10:23 AM
Maybe I am being impatient but for me HR has won nothing!! I dont even see the point that many keep throwing in that we are only getting to the quarters after 14 years like getting to the quarters after 14 years is some sort of mean achievement or something. Fine we had coaches that the technicality of the game was just above their understanding and we ended up not going beyound the 1st round but its funny u know. In the last Afcon with 4 points we went home in the 1st round. In this Afcon with four points we got to the quarters and the coach is getting all sorts of kudos for it. If HR wants to go let the man go and it is pretty obvious that should he come back he will still have an eye for another job with a bigger footballing country and thus his focus will be minimal.
Anonymous on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 10:25 AM
But a true fan should no that Renard used the opportunity given to him by Zambia to spice up his cv right? He used it as a platform for his career which paid off as far as he is concerned because he managed to take Zambia to the quarter finals – something that has not been achieved in 14 years abi?
So the man wants to move on to bigger things! You should not miss him so much because there are so many qualified coaches that can fill in the lads boots.
Uncle Bobs on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 10:28 AM
Bane,
If HR goes, let’s just wish him good luck and we move on. Whether he contributed to our “PROGRESS” or not is immaterial as whichever way, he was a stakeholder. My only advice to HR is that you never burn bridges by firgetting where you are coming from. He may be fired by Nigeria as has been the case with all others, at some point. Ba FAZ, let’s chart the best way forward to build on this very good foundation. But before anything else BRAND EQUITY through proper JERSEYS and with COLOUR consistency should be privatised. Right now we can’t even have REPLICAS as we have a millions strips.
Big Steve from SA on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 10:31 AM
Sibs apparently he was offered an extension but he chose not to sign with them. i think it was the same old expectation that he would get offers after the Afcon but unfortunately for him he didn’t get to play beyound 15 minutes. I hope he doesn’t expect to just walk into the 1st team at Pirates and as you have said with people like Josephy Kamwendo on the bench, he will have to work extra hard.

Zambia is and will be better off renard, lets engage our local coaches and motivate them, they know the players well, just look at how he could not use others on the bench like singuluma, mbesuma even just for a few minutes.
We have capable people with reasonable credentials to lead our National team, up until now no foreign coach has been able to beat the 1988 Olympic perform.
dan man on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 11:06 AM
whether he gets the job or not am not interested guys…..whats the way forward for our beloved team?…….
Uncle che on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 11:13 AM
According to the FiFa technical committee they have chosen the best players 4 the tournament.Unfortunately no Zambian player was in the starting eleven but as a consolation Jacob mulenga and Emmanuel Mbola made it to the substitute bench. The first eleven was mostly comprised of Egyptian players
lelo12 on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 11:26 AM
FAZ should not be Renard to make a decision, he has alread shown no more interest in coaching our Beloved National team, let them engage local coaches now.

justice,,,there is nothing new or advaced about facebook try twitter my brother!
big steve..you are right, there is nothing Renard has won for zambia,,the only thing he has won is for himself hes gotten to a stage where ‘big’ teams can notice him and on Chansa this a backward step, i wished from sweden he went France. The only person i think will make it back to europe from SA is felix, the rest am sure they will be back home soon

You are the guys who had written off HR. I think he is a good coach, whom we should have kept for long. I am totally against local coaches. 1. They favour players and play names. 2. Players like Mbola, Nyirenda would never have been discoscovred, we still would have been playing Tana. 3. Local coaches can not stand up to FAZ, FAZ officials will be picking the team. I think that is the problem in Zambia, we lack foresight.

Ba Muzo,
What is the latest on our players. Who is intrerested in who. We want better future for our players especailly the young ones. Tell on Kachepa on the ball please!
The Jude on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 12:42 PM
Yes we need to know. And we should start preparing for Gabon 2012 and Brazil 2014 Now. We have to make sure that Kalaba and company are ripe for 2012. I was impressed how Kalaba duzzled cameronians. Jacob Mulenga sent Rigobert Song into permanent retirement.
Amen

Talk about a player on fire Jacob Mulenga’s Coach was happy that he is back from Angola. Despite having arrived in Holland only on Friday morning Jacob Mulenga was in the starting 11 for Fc Utretch in their 0-0 draw with 5th placed Heracles. Jacob played the whole match.
His Coach Du Chatinier was quoted on the club website saying, ” I’m happy Jacob is back he had a good tournament in Angola, he scored goals and had some assists”.
The Jude on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 12:54 PM
Ohh Great Yakobo. He is Adebayor OR Kanu of the 90s in the making!
Great on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 1:00 PM
OooOO So Jacob is doing fine in Holland. I wish him well. Please keep on workinh hard my brother. We want you to be a big star and win the Africa Footballer of the Year Award.
Congrats Jacob
Big Steve from SA on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 1:04 PM
Funny how Kalaba did not make the list of the top players at the Afcon. In my opnion he had a far much better tournament than Mbola. The free kicks alone though not converted should have got his name on that list.
Big Steve from SA on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 1:11 PM
I was hoping armenia would win this weekend to reduce the gap betwen them and the log leaders so that we have at the least 4 or 5 players in first division european teams but they lost going now 8 points behind the log leaders. If they dont make it to the premier division then Chris should look at trying out somewere else as long as it is not back in the PSL. Jacob should continue this way and maybe his dream of donning a Liverpool ersey could ome true.
4-4-2 on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 1:22 PM
when our so called star mbesuma is busy playing around in Angola,,he should learn from Jacob and hope the rest of the players have gone back to their base

i agree with you, our local coaches dont look beyond tommorrow.if we ll have a local coach, trouble will come again.we wont see zambia in gabon or libya.let local coaches continue with their league or be assistant
Never on Mon, 1st Feb 2010 3:57 PM
One of the things we will miss if Renard goes is the independence in the selection players.Renards always tried to pick players he thought would do the job.Unlike Local coaches who are easily influenced by FAZ.

New stars emerge in Angola(FIFA.com) Monday 1 February 2010
Print Email my friend Share
While Egypt’s lifting of their third consecutive CAF Africa Cup of Nations trophy surprised few, there were plenty of revelations at the biennial tournament in Angola. Particularly notable was the emergence of a handful of players that have now planted themselves firmly on world football’s radar.
This was not a tournament in which established stars dominated, with the likes of Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba never really hitting form. However, a new generation of players emerged to pick up the slack, providing countless memorable moments. Ahmed Hassan was surely an exception, winning the tournament’s best player award in his fourth successful continental campaign, but it was the emergence of super-sub Mohamed ‘Gedo’ Nagui that was the biggest bonus for Egyptian supporters.
And while Nigeria’s Peter Odemwingie, Mali’s Seydou Keita and Côte d’Ivoire’s Gervinho confirmed their places among the best on the continent, a clutch of unheralded players also caught the eye at this latest Cup of Nations.
Mohamed Nagui, Egypt
The breakout star of the tournament with five goals in as many substitute appearances, the Al Ittihad striker known as Gedo scored a goal for every 35 minutes he was on the pitch. And they were almost all top-class finishes, with his quick-thinking volley against Mozambique in the group stage arguably the best of the lot. His finish in the 85th minute of the final as Egypt beat Ghana 1-0 was every bit as classy though, and even better was his run and full-speed combination play with Mohamed Zidan that set up the chance with extra time looming.
Samuel Inkoom, Ghana
A strong and balanced right back with a knack for finding himself in the middle of attacking action up the other end, Inkoom proved himself to be a good crosser of the ball as well as a solid defender. The 20-year-old Basel youngster was one of six players from the team that won the U-20 World Cup last October, and the only difficult choice for watchers was which of the composed young Ghanaian defenders were best as Isaac Vorsah, 21, and Lee Addy, 19, also enjoyed top-drawer tournaments.
Jonathan Pitroipa, Burkina Faso
The speedy winger was about as impressive as could be for a player whose team didn’t score any goals in the event. The 23-year-old was often left to cover great distances for his side up front, and he in turn showed great acceleration and skill with both feet as his team drew 0-0 with Côte d’Ivoire before falling to Ghana 1-0. It was a measure of his heart against the Black Stars that even though he spent the match taking on more than one defender at a time, he earned praise from Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac and his backline after the match. At the other end, defender Saidou Panandetiguiri, 25, was the best of back for the Burkinabe.
Emmanuel Mbola, Zambia
Aged just 16 years and eight months, the left-back was a strong part of the Zambian team that performed so well in reaching the quarter-finals in Angola. The Armenian-based player impressed with his physical defending and attacking instincts. He was one of the side’s best players in the last eight defeat to Nigeria on penalties and has already earned 20 caps for the Chipolopolo. The youngest player in the tournament, he is the second player under 17 to play at a Cup of Nations (after Gabonese striker Nzighou Chiva).
Mabina, Angola
While Flavio, Manucho and Gilberto drew most of the headlines for the hosts, little-known right-sided player Mabina also turned a lot of heads. He was a reserve coming into the event, but the Angola-based player was a tireless threat down the flank in Group A before being stymied along with the rest of his team in the quarter-finals by Ghana. Many are now describing him as the next Gilberto, referring to the 27-year-old winger who stars for Al Ahly in Egypt.
Andre Ayew, Ghana
The son of Black Stars legend Abedi Pele, Ayew has seemed to have little problem adjusting to such lofty comparisons so far in his fledgling career. Also a member of the world champion U-20 Ghana team, the 20-year-old was a confident, positive presence in midfield for the injury-hit Black Stars in Angola. The Marseille player was very comfortable on the ball and excelled in running at opposition defences. He kept his concentration to head home the only goal against Burkina Faso in Group B, which sent his team into the knockout rounds. .
Victor Nsofor Obinna, Nigeria
After coming on as a substitute in each of his country’s first five Cup of Nations matches and impressing with his rangy agility and dangerous running, Nsofor finally started a match in the third-place contest against Algeria. And the player, who is on loan at Malaga from Inter Milan, did not disappoint. The 22-year-old scored the game’s only goal with a tremendous burst of pace through the middle of Les Fennecs’ defence before finishing well with his left foot. It was one of the best moments of the tournament for the bronze-medal winners.
Kwadwo Asamoah, Ghana
The 21-year-old Udinese midfielder had one of the sweetest touches in the Cup of Nations, justifying his wearing of the No10 shirt at such a young age. It was his corner kick that curled perfectly onto the head of Asamoah Gyan, who scored the all-important goal in the semi-final against Nigeria. He also showed great skill in the Group B encounter against Côte d’Ivoire with speed and a fine shot that forced the best from goalkeeper Boubacar Barry.
Didier Ovono, Gabon
The goalkeeper, who turned 27 during the tournament, was the hero of the Black Panthers’ shock 1-0 victory over Cameroon to open the tournament. And though the team went out at the group stage based on goals scored, the Le Mans player continued to make an impact with his leadership of the backline and quick reflexes. Ovono only saw his goal breached twice at the CAN, both by Zambia in their third match. Talented young defender Bruno Ecuele Manga also impressed for the Gabonese.

The best news is about our Jacob Mulenga. I hope he can continue improving his game. The Dutch are good at making a player flourish. He was impressive in Angola. Keep the flag flying high in Holland

You my countrymen are bitter, jealous losers. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn’t Renard’s contract expire very soon? Is it May or July? Are there any competitions that Zambia is participating in between now and then that I forgot about? So what’s wrong with the guy saying, my contract is up, thank you very much, I am going? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT? Who is the biggest winner here? The man who came to coach a mediocre team, makes it competitive, earns praise and moves from making $20,000 a month to $50,000 or the man whose team fails and gets fired? That’s why Zambia will never progress. Too many losers and bitter people. You should be happy when people progress. May be if your coaches were as ambitious as Renard, they would also be receiving offers to coach big teams and make big money. Renard has done nothing wrong at all. I read an interview just a few days ago where Jacob Mulenga, the same player you are praising, said that his dream is to play for Liverpool. Jacob has a contract with Utrecht. Does that mean he’s a traitor?? We are criticizing Isaac Chansa for lack of ambition for moving from Sweden to SA. So where has Renard, who’s contract expires in a few months, gone wrong? May be if more Zambians in all fields of endeavor aimed for the sky, our country would be better. I would be happy to see Mbola with Arsenal or Chelsea. I read once that Elijah Litana, who was ten times better than Lucas Radebe, was offered a contract by Leeds United but he refused because he was happy in Saudi Arabia where he was making $10,000 a month. Where is Litana now? Where is Radebe? I would be very happy if Renard got the Nigeria job and took them to the World Cup quarterfinals. Don’t you know that that would be good for Zambia’s reputation as well? Yet some here want him to fail. Never wish ill on others my friends. It comes back to you. The problem with some of you like the HR hater Muzo is that you have taken things too personal and are emotional. Were you competiting for the same girlfriend with Renard from the way you criticise him? He can do no right in your eyes. Then someone says Renard was lucky, we have good players. In that case tell FAZ to save money and not hire a coach because we have good players. Let them hire a Zambian coach or may be we can appoint one of you critics as coach! Just pick the team and let them play. Kekeke!

This is the best blog I have ever read. The problem is that most people wrote HR and the team off, now they don’t want to accept that the team performed well and that HR is a good coach.
