Renard stays behind as Tsunami urge FAZ to maintain team

January 28, 2010

under-20-renard

Renard has opted to remain in Angola to watch the West African derby. He will be in the stands to have a closer look at Nigeria.

Zambia national soccer team captain Chris ‘Tsunami’ Katongo has urged the Football Association of Zambia, FAZ to maintain the team for the ‘next four or  five  years.’

And coach Herve Renard remained behind in Angola to watch the semi-final clash between Ghana and Nigeria, a country believed to be courting his services.

The  Chipolopolo Boys arrived in Lusaka at mid-day aboard a ZAF plane which was dispatched by H.E President Rupiah Banda except for the Frenchman and striker Collins Mbesuma.

“Very few people come here to white house. We are humbled and I would like to edge FAZ to maintain the team,” Katongo said in a vote of thanks at State House.

FAZ President Kalusha Bwalya thanked the kit sponsors, Nike, Zambian Breweries Group, Toyota Zambia and Konkola Copper Mines for sponsoring the team.

The players including FAZ officials were clad in black suits and green ties.

Chris Katongo has been promoted again from Staff Sergent to a new rank. Dennis Banda who was unused substitute in Angola was also promoted by the Commander in chief H.E President Rupiah Banda. Banda is on the books of Green Buffaloes

Meanwhile Renard decided to remain behind to watch his former the Black Stars of Ghana were he started his african adventure as a physical trainer take on the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a West African derby.

On the eve of Zambia’s quarter final clash with Nigeria, the Frenchman decided to market himself and eye the Nigerian job after earlier reports that the Nigerian Football Association were looking to replace their current national coach Shaibu Amodu with Mozambique coach Nooj being the bookmakers’ favourite to the land the job then.

“I can trek from Angola to Nigeria to work in Nigeria. Do you think any coach can refuse to work with Nigeria,” the Frenchman has been quoted

“But first, I have to respect that there is a coach in that position,” but if some day somebody will invite me to work in Nigeria, it would be a pleasure for me.” In the few days Renard has hit back at his critics in Zambia and hinted that he was unsure if he was going to extend his contract.

But Super Eagles coach Amadou Shaibu has said given a choice he would rather work with Mali coach Stephen Keshi than Chipolopolo coach Herve Renard at the 2010 World Cup.

The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) is looking for a foreigner to assist Amadou and renard has been mooted as a potential prospect.

Shaibu told Nigerian newspaper Vangurad that there was nothing spectacular about Renard after eliminating Chipolopolo in the quarterfinals in Lubango on january 25.

“Does it mean there’s nothing good in a black man?” Amadou said. “What extraordinary thing has the Mozambican coach that they were talking about done? We beat his team. Then the issue of the Zambian coach came up. I have beaten him too.

“Gentlemen, I prefer to work with Keshi than a white mercenary who may not know what Keshi knows about our football. If they want another person, let that person be our own, not a foreigner who may not offer much to our football within few months.”

Job well done, lads. Renard will be an asset to whichever team that hires him. Don’t begrudge him you losers out there. He’s a professional, amibitious and wants to succeed. If more Zambians, both players and coaches, were like that, we would be a power. We wouldn’t have lost talent like Emanuel Zulu, Mbesuma would still be in form, Charles Lota would not have disappeared, Mathews “Papa” would not have run away. Tenant Chilumba would not have crashed his car….I can go on. I hope the current squad remainds disciplined and doesn’t get carried away with the few dollars they’ve received in bonuses. Their friends like Drogba, Kolo Toure, Eto’o and even Adebayor get over $60,000 just in a week!

Why did they have to aboard a zaf plane? we don’t want another attack on our football troops. Next time give them zambezi airlines.

Congratulations to the entire team on a super job!

We’ve shown we can compete with some of the best in the world! Now it’s time to show we can win against the best period. That’s the challenge i’m sure everyone believes you we are capable of. Continuity can be difficult and complex, but i’m sure whatever happens, one way or another we are going to build on this success.

Zamfoot; not trying to be difficult, but shouldn’t it be “urge” not edge???!!

If Renard is staying behind to watch Nigeria, I would think he is definately trying to get Shaibus job. Either way, I can see us moving forward as long as we set a new target for 2012 Olympics and 2012 AFCON, with 2014 World Cup being the ultimate goal. There is enough time and enough talent and youth in the current team to acheive those things. I am just hoping that the world cup does not eclypse the talent the guys exhibited ku AFCON. Some of those guys deserve to be in some better teams… especially Kalaba and Felix, those guys should not be warming benches in Portugal and SA. Felix definately deserves to play somewhere he can get games every week… he can improve greatly.

A good replacement for HR in my opinion would be Stephen Keshi, I think he is ambitious enough and has a very strong resume, especially considering what he did with the Togo team. Only issue with him, is the contreversy he can sometimes stir up, but with Zed he wouldn’t have to deal with egoes like that of Adebayor. Wedson Nyerinda I don’t think is ready just yet, I think he and January Janza are definately people we should be preparing for the future… January Janza especially

Congrats boys nd GRZ for taking care of them.hey pipo stop critizing ZAF,the aircraft used was an MA-60 very mordern plane similar to the ATR-42,capable of reachn 25000 feet ceiling nd its a damn gud plane,so peaple relax its a new plane ZAF actualy has two,nt the obsolate buffalos the had.so thot i’d educate y’all a bit

  14. jaggari on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 8:24 PM

My friends, the ill-fated Buffalo plane that I presume you are referring to when you decry ZAF aircraft was not shot down. It was merely a faulty craft that had been previously mothballed [packed away in storage]. One engine exploded and the plane came down in the Ocean. Had it been shot down, it would have exploded in mid-air and there would have been absolutely no intact bodies retrieved like the great Ucar’s, the crew [my ZAF sources said they were all intact] and several others. A missile is a rocket with a warhead that explodes on impact with the target. It would spread bits and pieces of the plane over a large area. Just for the record.

  15. jaggari on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 8:30 PM

Michk1, I’m familiar with the MA-60. It’s Chinese made and was introduced in 2000. Air Zimbabwe had two but one ploughed into some warthog on take-off in Harare last November, which you can blame on the stupid warthogs, lol!. Other than that, it has a good record so our boys were safe.

nice one jagari,i heard about the harare incident, now imagine jagari if the used TAAG angolan airlines who with their 737-700 landed at city airport by mistake instead of lsk international, lets link up 2talk about planes.renard jst wants another job

  17. Steven on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 8:42 PM

I’ve been a big HR supporter, but this latest stunt of his smells of dissrespect. I know he is entitled to doing whatever he wants, but this just doesn’t sit well with me. Its like Kalu on the SuperSport show. I’m just not sure.

  18. Kai Kai on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 8:50 PM

Renard’s actions are ok, ba Steven. He is a honest guy who’s doing everything in the open, like they do in Europe. What’s wrong? His job is over. Contract expires in July. No tournaments until then. If we Zambians were as organized as him, we would have fixed Independence Stadium a long time ago and hosted several World Cup-bound teams. Imagine with Zambia’s new reputation how many countries would love to play us? All of Nigeria’s and Cameroon’s opponents who saw us give these giants a scare would be camping in Zambia before going to SA. But they can’t do that because we have no stadium of international quality for their players! Renard earns $20G a month, which is peanuts in football. He knows that he’s not renewing the contract in July, so the man is preparing for the future to feed his family. That’s why I say there are too many losers in Zambia and I don’t mean you ba Steven. But the good and smart ones prevailed this time and that’s why we did well. We should have planned like Renard.

  19. Kai Kai on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 8:53 PM

Amodu of Nigeria is playing the race card with Renard. How can he say that there’s nothing spectacular about hime when his [Renard's] young team from cinderella clubs outplayed his superstars from big clubs? The whole world saw whose team was the better coached. And it wasn’t because of prayers [yes, I am a Christian but the Lord doesn't favor anyone in a football game!] that we outplayed Nigeria, some of you!

Guys have been saying lets get Keshi, L.Mathaeus honestlty we can’t afford these Coaches the $20k we were HR is nothing to what a top class Coach would ask for. Nigeria used to pay Bert Vorgts their former Coach about 55,000 Euros.

I don’t know if ‘Boma’ would be willing to part with such a huge amount to get the top class Coach we crying for ?

  24. Steven on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 9:47 PM

Kai Kai, you and I speak the same language. I fully acknowledge what you are saying. I felt HR was a good coach back when we played at Togo. I have said many times here, the way we are running our affairs in Zambia is pathetic. With the resources and support FAZ gets, we should be far ahead of where we are. To think that Angola and South Africa have been to the World Cup even before us should be embarrassing. The fact that our jerseys and infrastructure are not of the highest quality should also embarass us. That being said, HR probably should not be this blatant in his pursuits. I think if he has to be with us til July, then maybe he should be holding clinics or something. He still has a responsibility to be Zambia’s coach.

  25. Steven on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 9:48 PM

  27. Kai Kai on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 10:05 PM

Steven, I hear you, my brother. Let’s fix the jersey situation as soon as possible. It’s very embarrassing. The Zambia swimming team have better kit and track suits in national colors than FAZ. The infrastructure, too, we must work on. I think once we have these things, it would be even easier to get a good coach who may not ask for top dollars. It’s like if you are chasing a beautiful woman that other guys wants and you bring her to your messy flat. Unless she’s really interested in you, the mess along will turn her off. Let’s start fixing every aspect of Zambian football. Ma jersey, pleeze!

  28. Steven on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 10:10 PM

1-0 Egypt. Penalty and Red Card. 40 mins gone.

  29. Steven on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 10:13 PM

I hear you Kai Kai. The claim is that we have a contract with Nike. But my issue is even Brazil, USA, Portugal and Holland have contracts with Nike, so why do our jerseys look like they are from Kamwala? Imagine how many countries would love to play friendlies with us on their way to the world cup? But where will they play? Pa Barclays Complex? or BOZ club? We’re not serious.

  36. Kai Kai on Thu, 28th Jan 2010 11:37 PM

It should be mentioned that Egypt’s first goal came from a penalty, awarded against Algeria along with a red card. They had two more players sent off and finished with eight men, so even though the Egyptians won 4-0, it’s not a fair indication of the balance between the two teams.

What kind of contract do we have with Nike? It really beats common sense. One can argue that stadia would take a lot of resources to get sorted out. But one would think the easiest thing to fix would be the jerseys! Why can’t we get a proper kit like our neighbors, Angola, Malawi, and Mozambique. That kit against Tunisia just did not make any sense…I mean two shades of green? Common Kalu, that should be something you should have control over.

Renard is behaving like a BITCH!!! Let him go if he so wishes..We have many coaches who can take up the job of Zambia coach (Even local ones like Chicken George and Wedson Nyirenda). Its the skill that we have and not his (HR) ideas. Our team is at its peak and has been together for sometime. That explains the good performance.Chipolopolo 4Life!! To Hell with Herve!
GOvernment…we dont want Military planes to be picking our players…Memories of Gabon are still very fresh!

  40. Derricknho on Fri, 29th Jan 2010 8:18 AM

Let HR go if he wants.HR is not gona make it with Nigeria due to the following reasons:

1.Nigerians have no patience and they need results – Knowing HR would start from scratch and do all sorts of experiments.
2.The period before the world cup is quite short for a learner coach like him to perform effectively and attain desired results. On long term basis he is ok.
3.HR has not got the necessary experience to coach a high profile team with highly talented players.
4.As I have said that he is still learning, He does not read the game make tactical changes as matches progresses.
5.The world cup is too big a stage for him for a start.
6.The pressure in Nigeria on the coach is heavier than Zambia.Government intervens and media really critises.Ask Keshi.

On the physical apsect, in my opinion Zambia topped at AFCON 2010 and I appreciate HR a lot on that but he improve on the technical part, he will be a very good coach.Any way he is young and slowly he is building up his career but he should not rush.

  42. kayula on Fri, 29th Jan 2010 9:39 AM

Imwe sure!!! i have blogged before on the issue of our strips…the Nike we saw or we just call it ili chongedwe is indeed pathetic. Yes please what kind of contract do we have with Nike?? i dont see any reason why our team should look so shabby when they were having a good game. Not even genuine Nike training jerseys would look that bad. Mukoka of Post previously wrote about the the suspicious Nike deal but perhaps we didnt take him serious thinking it was the usual beef with Kalu. What happened to the copper and black colours? I know the white jersey has been there for long time now but what does it represent? maybe someone more knowlegeble can school us, help!

  43. jc on Fri, 29th Jan 2010 9:50 AM

why cant we go back to the copper and black strip. FAZ can get a good designer like RSA does for its jerseys.

  44. Big Steve from SA on Fri, 29th Jan 2010 9:59 AM

You are right Sibs, the joker money we pay our coaches limits us to these physical trainer sorts and not seasoned coaches. I guess we have achieved a lot geting to the quarters but then again we still have not won anything, not even a bronze. its back to the same old story of we played very well but were unlucky.

We are going to get another upstart coach or cheap coach with no clear record and we will have another eish moment again and agian and again till some of us are 80 somthing. We need to start embracing change cause like it or not it is constant and only those that adapt to it survive. We need to get a seasoned coach and pay him even 50,000 Euros a month and give him not less than two years to mould a winning team. This thing of praise songs for coaches who are winning nothing has to end. HR has won nothing, Nada, jack!!!!!! but we have people singing his praises left right and centre. Is it not winning things that determines a good coach??? He is now pushing his luck in Angola hoping to clinch a good deal and if nothing comes to fruit he wil just come back to Zambia and we will gladly extend his contract. We played very good football but haven’t we always. We are so used to losing that now a quarter final berth seems like a goldmine and the coach that took us there like a mini God. We need a coach with a winning mentality, a coach who wil win things, a coach who will not down talk his players as being average and see a querterfinal position as being satifactory. Goverment like the Malian govermment which does not even have a higher GDP than Zambia, should look to investing into a proper coach. A coach with pedigree. lets change and try out a seasoned winning coach for a change. No more experiments and hoping. we need to change the way we d things. he old way has brought us close but we need to win. No more 14 years 1st round exists, no more coaches targeting qurter final berths and losing to Zanzibar, no more. Lets change and do it differently. get ahigh profile coach, goverment only needs to cut two or three ministers benefits, allowances and all that unnecessary money to aford a coach with pedigree. The stadiums are being built lets hope they will be completed now we need a seasoned coach.

Why should we be the sitting duck for coaches to come and build C.V’s on us?? Why cant we be the team the coaches with already built C.V’s come to and let other mediocre teams be the sitting ducks? lets not look down on ourselves, we should be at the top with the best of them.

Can FAZ let us know why our Nike jerseys look inferior (not sure about quality though they look so by looking but certainly by colour that doesn’t exhibit any brand equity). Am told we get them as t-shirts and have to do our own emblems which is not the case with the respected PUMA, Adidas and Original Nike (USA, Brazil, Man U, Arsenal and Portugal, certainly not Zambia’s). Next time the journalists write about it we don’t want you to cry like spoilt children. Own up and improve to the standards us the stakeholders want-consistent colours and jersey types. The two strips we used in Angola were very different while other teams only had colours differing. We can pay worthwhile coaches (Leroy, Trousier, Kasperzack, Henri Michel that know and understand African Soccer) and should not set our standards low (ati we can only pay US$20k and not US$50k). The problem in Zambian we have the archiac thinking that a soccer coach or player cannot be paid more than an Educated person like Uncle Bobs!). We need to move with the wind of change and best practice!

  50. Kibakimani on Fri, 29th Jan 2010 6:43 PM

Kai kai seems to be a big loser. All students of management know that the work of a manager is to instill self belief in the pipo he is managing and give them an asurance that they can be as good as anybody. But did HR do that, the thing the crip did was to tell our players that they were not as good as camerouneans , Ghanaians, egyptians etc. So what do you expect when your player meet these teams. Its gullible to say HR is a realist, he simply has no loyalt and respect for us as country. he wants to ride on other pipo’s successes. Stephe Keshi raised a formidable team out of a Togolease side that was no where. that coach from Angola raised a formidable Palancas negrase as we know them today. imagine HR what us to believe that we are not even as good as Gabon?

If you are a dissiple of HR, sorry but I doubt your sanity. All kudos must goal to are players. I can bet that HR will be sucked for arrogance and incomeptence in his next assignment
