Zambia, South Korea clash as Togo withdraw from AFCON

January 9, 2010

ChamangaJames060122ChallengedAI310

Can Chamanga destroy South Korea like he did to North?

Zambia play their last preparatory friendly match for the African Nations Cup (Afcon) against South Korea at the Rand Stadium in South Africa while Togo who were caught up in a deadly gun shooting on their arrival by bus in Cabinda for the tournament have withdrawn.

The build up to the AFCON has been marred by the shooting in which the driver of the coach the Hawks were travelling in from Congo Braziville was shot dead just after entering the Angola border while two Togo non playing staff have since died following the the fatal shoot out that had two Togo  players shot and wounded  prompting the Emmaneul Adebayor led side to pull out of the tournament just 24 hours before it starts.

Organisers from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are adamant the championship will go ahead and the Chipolopolo Boys thus face World Cup finalists South Korea to wind up their training before flying to Lubango tomorrow in readiness for their first match against Tunisia on Wednesday.Zambianfootball.net understands Coach Herve Renard has maintained the same back four that heroically held Nigeria 0-0 in the last preparatory training match in Durban.

The French man has decided to go with Kennedy Mweene in goal, Joseph Musonda and Emmanuel Mbola as right backs. Although Mbola has to pass a late fitness test as he was reportedly unwell.

Stophilla Sunzu now being  used as a makeshift centre back  by Renard will partner veteran Chintu Kampamba while Thomas Nyirenda keeps his place in front of the back four.

Rainford Kalaba and Felix Katongo complete the midfield trio while upfront James Chamanga, Jacob Mulenga and Chris Katongo are expected to start in the 16 30 kick off.

Togo reportedly are canvasing for other teams to boycott the tournament while organisers insist the tournament, the first to be hosted bt a Portuguese speaking country will go on as they step up security.

French L’Equipe newspaper quotes Togo midfielder Alaixys Romao saying teams in their group must withdraw from the AFCON as well:

”We are talking to other teams in our group to try to convince them to boycott too.”

And he was supported by his coach Herbelt Velud and team captain Adebayor who feel the entire tournament must be cancelled.

What is your view should the AFCON  be called off due to the tragic shooting of the Togo team and the subsequent deaths? Have your say.

What about the central defence partnership, is it holding?

  23. Seen from afar on Sat, 9th Jan 2010 5:26 PM

Excellent first half, the boys are very sharp. Beautiful well crafted 2nd goal which built from a stolen ball in the midfield. Kalaba finished by chipping the keeper!!

There’s more action going up the right wing through Chris and James. Felix has been mostly quiet through the half. Hope he didn’t pick up an severe injury as he’s been substituted, looked like a good “dead leg” knock to the thigh.

I think James and Jacob need to settle down a bit and vary the pace, choose take time on the ball when they can and go quick when they need too!!!

  24. Zed # 1 on Sat, 9th Jan 2010 5:27 PM

Gond that we are scoring. But on a serious note I think CAF, FIFA, Angolan Govt and SADC need to give the Togolise violation serious attention because the World Cup + any other future tournaments will have great reservations especialy in southern Africa. There is need for dialogue; resolutions & healing. Because all the teams face this eminent risk, including Zambia. So FAZ is to take keen interest.
Hope the reports we are getting about goals are real.. Bravo!

At least the attack looks dangerous, but defence seems to be nervous and disorganised still. Korea’s strength is their pace, but that’s about it.

  59. Justice Kafusha on Sat, 9th Jan 2010 6:31 PM

I think they may come more trouble at AFCON and the best for CAF is to move all group games from this town of Cabinda or Kabinda somehere else. It is not a safe place. Otherwise I support Togo for withdrawing. Whether AFCON has to be called off I am not sure but should say the thugs of warned of further trouble

  60. Smm-SoJC on Sat, 9th Jan 2010 6:34 PM

better a win than a loss … opefully we learn from the two lapses and thn seal up for massive wins… well done Chipolopolo and just go ‘bulletstic’ against all opponents …. win or lose Zambian for life … proud to be Zambian and will always do and have only one serious team to give my full support – Chipolopolo … am no soccer cadre ,,,… God bless my dear land and all that abidedth herein … Shalom

  62. Mario on Sat, 9th Jan 2010 6:36 PM

I think the AFCON shouldn’t be called off because the security issues will only be in Cabinda. The games must definitely be moved from Cabinda. I still can’t understand why the Togolese would risk driving into Cabinda, a known hot zone. I am surprised Angola decided to stage matches there in the first place.

  63. Seen from afar on Sat, 9th Jan 2010 6:37 PM

I’m glad SK scored, best the guys get it out their system. First goal came from a silly free kick which Chris conceded in front of the box, trying to take the ball off the S Koreans head with his foot. The free kick, Mweene saved spectacularly but the ball hit the inside of the bar rebounding to an SK player.

From a free kick of our own in which we committed too many players and lost the ball… It allowed the Koreans to counter, the clearance was volleyed. Nice goal for SK. Both avoidable goals on our part i feel.

  64. Alex on Sat, 9th Jan 2010 6:39 PM

Atleast goals have started flowing. 4 goals in one game is a good result and a morale booster. Waiting for the player ratings to know who deserves to be in the starting lineup. Weelee and congrats.

all goals are avoidable great guys; this is football … if we are looking for match without blunders, i advise we try othe planets … we scored because SK made mistakes … there would be no goals if they were no mistakes … the aim for each team is to avoid making one and ensure the other makes it for the goal to come … this football … viva Chipolopolo, even a goal would have been enough … God bless the Republic and Shalom

    First half:

    Mweene
    Njobovu Chitnu Sunzu Muzo
    Chris Kalaba Nyirenda? Felix
    James Jacob

Cliff came on for Felix following his knock, maybe just subbed for precaution. This whole line up played equally well. Sunzu and Kapamba did well, rarely tested but cleared well when they were, could possibly do with more cover from the mid. James and Jacob both had chances… Second half Mbesuma played as a lone striker with Mayuka for support on the right wing, Chivuta played in the midfield. Chansa on for Kalaba also covering from the back. The organization of the second half wasn’t fully up to scratch but still produced some good plays. Not sure about the other substitution.

According to the French Sports Daily L’Equipe, the Togo team has decided to remain in the African Cup of Nations tournament and compete in honor of their fallen comrades who were victimized when the squad’s bus was attacked in Angola.

Defender Joleon Lescott, a Manchester City club player, told the paper that the team held a late vote and decided to go ahead with their scheduled match versus Ghana.

“People died for this and others are injured. We can not abandon them and go like cowards.”

The Angolan government apparently pleaded with the players to not give the attacking rebels the satisfaction of stopping a team from competing in the tournament. The Angolans also promised improved security to ensure the safety of the team.

It is unclear if the decision of the Togo team will be backed by their own country – which moved to recall the team in the wake of the attack.

“Our government does not necessarily agree with us, but we are all determined to play this tournament,” Lescott reportedly said. End of quote

That’s the african spirit, please Togo do not withdraw, the characters who shot at you are cowards, thats why they ran in the bush,. its good for the tornament for you to continue. May the Angolan Govt make sure that they deal with these rebels once and for all and Congo brazavile should shoulder some blame as they are not helping angola by allowing these violet guys to attack Angolan territory on most times.
Any security has been intensified for the Afcon and all teams have been assured. Its unfortunent that the Togolese team was short at. Best wishes to them and we hope they will do their country proud. We may compare this to what happened to Zambia in 1993, we lost the whole team in Gabon, but went on to reach the finals at Tunisia 94.

Football must unity all of us whether Zambian, Angolans, Togolese, Nigerians, etc against perpetrators of violence.

May this AFCON be a success and best wishes to the chipolopolo. Good result against SK, but now forget that, real business is at AFCON, friendlies should not go to our heads and think we are already in the final. TAKE ONE GAME AS IT COMES.

Tunisia suffered a surprise reversal at home on Saturday, beaten 2-1 by the Gambia in their African Nations Cup warm-up international in Tunis.

It was a disappointing start for new coach Faouzi Benzarti, brought in after November’s disappointment of narrowly missing out on World Cup qualification.

Benzarti’s much changed side went down in the second half to Cherno Samba’s goal before American-based Sainey Nyassi added a second goal for the tiny east African country six minutes from the end of the game.
