Nigeria hold Zambia 0-0

January 6, 2010

zambia nigeria

Unlike the epic of 1994 won by Nigeria 2-1, today's match has ended 0-0

Zambia were this afternoon held 0-0 in a training match against Nigeria as the two once Africa power houses rekindled their rivalry as they prepare for the CAF Orange Nations Cup beginning on Sunday in Angola.

The preparatory match was played at the ABSA Stadium in Durban where the Chipolopolo  travelled from their training base in Johannesburg to face the Super Eagles who are based there.

Reliable sources have told zambianfootball.net the game played behind closed doors was very competitive and played at a very high tempo -’physical and fast’ with both team using all their best available players in the match.

Coach Herve Renard fielded Kennedy Mweene in goal, Joseph Musonda and Emmanuel Mbola as full backs and experimented with Stophilla Sunzu at the heart of the defence with Chintu Kampamba as first revealed by Zambianfootball.net this morning.

Rookie  defender Thomas Nyirenda was slotted in the midfied defensive role alongside Rainford Kalaba and Felix Katongo to complete the man power in the engine room.

In form James Chamanga, Jacob Mulenga and Chris Katongo played as the strikers in Renard’s favoured 4-3-3 formation.

The Nigerians were at full strength.

Renard’s eye is now on the Chipolopolo’s friendly international against World Cup finalist South Korea on Saturday.

More details to follow

Ba JK we shall wait and see. That formation has cost us goals to be honest. But so far so good I guess. The confidence of the boys will certainly have been boosted by this result.

Long time brother. Been reading your comments very nice ones. The result is good Vs an attack minded Nigerian and Cameroon side but Vs Tunisia it may end up a disaster. Why did HR not rest Mbola and Kalaba who not playing in the first game. I hope he has been told they are suspended which is crap. I all yellow and red cards must reduced to zero so that all teams are at par. I do not understand CAF’s thinking. Anyway we see how things fold out

Cheers Ba Muzo and please keep it up

Thanks ba mudala. We shall wait to get full details but he may have an eye on the Korea match Renard hence the decison to field Mbola and Kalaba. But you are right, Tunisia and Cameroun are a different proposition. Gabon too, they have an intelligent coach in Alain Giresse who played alonside Michel Platini and Jean Tigan in that fantastic French midfield that wion the 1984 European Nations Champioships. So ama experiments may bring hail storm on us!
I cannot agree with you anymore on carrying over yellow cards into the tournament by CAF from the qualifiers.
United in Zambian football! Forward we shall go!

Fingers crossed. 4-4-2 remains Zambia’s best option with the players we have. But versatility is important as well depending on the opposition. Otherwise, I agree with you on confidence and strength. You are spot on!

every game we play will be difficult especially the last two becuse both teams will have had a chanceto see our game plan we need to take all chances count against tunisia in the opening game. Ba muzo we are humbled with the up dates keep reminding us thank you so much go Zambia go

good to know they got in a quality game before South Korea and the Tournament. Like Justice said the goals will come at AFCON, this group of guys is defin our GOLDEN GENERATION. The fact that most are young and have a lot of talent speaks volumes, the key is wether they are maintained regardless of what transpires at the tournament. We most likely will not win it all, but we will do better than 2 years ago and create a buzz. The game sat against South Korea will be very telling. Interesting tit bit, 2 games against world cup teams and we have not lost, not bad………..!

  18. Mabbwana on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 7:27 PM

Good result this. HRs experiments at the back and in the holding midfield role seem to be holding so far.

I can imagine morale is very high in camp now. This is what the team needs. I hope they get a result against the S Koreans on Saturday.

Thumbs up to Kalu and technical team for the friendly and the results so far.

  19. Asilikale on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 7:29 PM

good news man kalaba and mbola will play.

Accidentaly i switchd to ZNBCtv and there was these soccer fans kalaluka, matimba, kamanga and etc on SPORT ON program then some1 sent an sms trying to knw if kalaba and mbola will play.
The good news is tht fifa has quashed off all yellow cards as u knw its 2010 new year.No grudges, fifa is gud.

Too bad draws have continued, the players are ok ,the problem is formation.

  20. Alex on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 7:34 PM

I beg to be corrected but if i heard E Mwanza correctly during his last interview he mentioned something like the suspension on mbola and kalaba been lifted. Good result for zambia,no injuries and weelee!

  21. Jojo on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 7:45 PM

Morale boosting result indeed,i just hope our central defence was tested,it looks like we will be going with stoppila and chintu as our first choice central defensive partnership,

  22. cîroc on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 7:45 PM

good result.. but I thought 4.3.3 formations were supposed to result in goals (e.g. Barcelona)? Either way, we do not know the full details of the match so it may be better to reserve judgment. The S. Korea game should be a good test. I am interested to see how our boys match up against the best from Asia.

  23. Zed # 1 on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 7:54 PM

I hope the result give the team a boost. HR Hear our cry & use 4-4-2. Hope we replicate the form against South Korea. My people lets keep the faith following.

  24. Richie on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 7:59 PM

Good to have zamfoot in full swing. The result we have gotten against Nigeria is important not only to the players but to every soccer fan as well especially those who are saying no matter what happens at afcon,as far as am concerned our chances to reach the semi finals are as good as the chances for any other team and if we go with a high morale and our boys start to look at themselves as big and matured boys-we can go far. Big up to KALU for the friendly games we have played and the saturday game, kalu has worked so hard to organise the nigeria and i hope he continues even after afcon

  25. Positive thinking ..aka Awe on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 8:12 PM

Very well done ba Zambia. As long as the 4-3-3 yields results I have no problem with it. Still not happy with the defensive midfielder/central defender issue we are having. I guess this is the time to experiment, but lets figure it out before playing Tunisia.

  26. Nams on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 8:21 PM

Good result but I think HR will never stop experiments. How do you begin to use Sunzu at backline now and yet at COSAFA and CECAFA where experiments were supposed to be done they were not! For me we may only have three central defenders in that squad (Chintu, HH and Den). Anyway, we wait and see. But tell abena Kalu to use the money from ZB for the intended purpose, although ZB should have given it as daily allowances for now coz preps are almost over!

  27. ek on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 9:21 PM

i guess hr being the man in charge he knows wat he wnts best lets vgve him all the support,on 4-3-3 formation ,its ok as long we ve players who are tactical despline,i guess those players in the middle r kalaba, thomas and chansa, felix holding too much on ball.sunzu this may be his right position looking his height advantage i compare him to congo braza chris samba hw plays at black burn, he used to be a midfieder cum striker nw a defender which suits him well. probably starting line-up against trunisia mweene _ _musonda_mbola_sunzu_chintu_thomas_kalaba- felix_chris_jacob-chama boy

  28. Seen from afar on Wed, 6th Jan 2010 9:48 PM

Ok result, but the formation is static, unnatural for us. It means everyone is trying to do too much in a game… Anyway…

Nigeria looked ok in the qualifiers but they are not inspirational, all their creativity comes through Odemwingie then Mikel is the enforcer in midfield… Still they are all quality and i’m glad we got to rub shoulders with them.

  31. Mose on Thu, 7th Jan 2010 2:03 AM

4-3-3 is the best formation for fast wingers who can run the full 90 min i wonder why Clifford Mulenga is not a starter in that formation his quick on the right wing and the best we have. But hope we don’t make that mistaken when we face stiff competition because its best we play 4-5-1 against big teams or the 4-4-2 so that we match them in the midfield. but good if we didnt concede but we have to score

  32. Gametime12 on Thu, 7th Jan 2010 2:10 AM

Aparently “Zambian players are not the right players for this formation”, I find that hard to believe. 4-3-3 is a modern commonly used formation. The notion that we are not scoring because of this formation is just rediculous. We’ve always had problems scoring even in the kalu days, we were just gifted with talented players then. Kalu could score free kicks, jonston Bwalya could shoot outside the 18 area, and Elijah Litana could score some set pieces. We never had a player who could score from free kicks or set pieces or even from outside the 18 after those three. Save for Elijah Tana who almost always scored his free kicks, otherwise no one has been able to do that consistantly I’m not talking about flukes here. If our players are having problems adjusting to this formation then kaya mwandi mwe, may be that is why they are failing to play for big clubs.

Man ceasor :if sunzu is nt da rite man who should renard use?let our players learn 4-3-3 its gud.go zed go

I think Sunzu is fine in the central defence, he is better than HH. The only reason they used HH was because of his height, but Sunzu got the height and he is solid. What’s wrong with using a denfensive midfielder as a central defender? Ask Sinkala and Sichone they will tell you that they can be deployed in both positions and fit in perfectly. Andrew Tembo is a perfect example that players can switch positions to something that fits them. Andrew Tembo was never a winger but Ian Poterfield converted him into one. So who knows, this might be just the right position for Sunzu.

  34. Gametime12 on Thu, 7th Jan 2010 2:20 AM

But then again HR makes too many changes sometimes, I thought Clifford Mulenga would be in the starting line up. I’ll wait for more details or for the friendly against South Korea may be will know the starting 11 by that time.

teams who play 4-3-3 alot harder to beat, their games are more compact, i welcome this formation it allows zambia to be more counter attacking and defensive. something we should have learned from games against algeria.

Some insight to the Zambia vs Nigeria game from Kickoff.

Zambia kick Eagles hard, end match goalless
Sports Jan 6, 2010 By John Egbokhan

Nigeria’s Super Eagles, yesterday in Durban, failed to fly against Zambia’s Chipolopolo, who held their West Africans foes to a barren draw in a warm-up match for the African Cup of Nations, kicking off this weekend in Angola.

Few days after labouring to a 1-0 win against a second tier side from South Africa at the same venue, the Nigerians were expected to shore up their performance as the countdown to the Nations Cup reaches its final stage but they got more than they bargained for in a Zambian side, who showed more hunger and determination in snuffing life out of Eagles’s attacking forays. In fact, it ended goalless, but Eagles were at the receiving end as Zambians were harder on the ball and against them.

Coach Shaibu Amodu filed his regulars for this match, the last in the series of games used to prep up the team and they all still failed to breach their foes’ defence, throughout the duration of the game.

According to information gleaned from the match venue, the Zambians were resolute in their approach to the match, which was to prevent the Nigerians from having the space to play any passing game. Indeed, to ensure that the Eagles were caged, the Zambians markers were chasing every ball as they even went as far as hustling down their foes, when the situation demanded for such.

And their strategy worked in their good as they were able to hold one of the teams expected to light up the competition.

Although it was a friendly affair, the importance which Zambia attached to this tie was such that they celebrated the draw with the 2004 champions of the tournament, which the Nigerians won at the expense of Zambia, who fell 2-1, thanks to goals from Emmanuel Amuneke, who came in as a substitute after Zambia had shot to a 1-0 lead.

Media coordinator for the team, Idah Peterside, said that it was a good test for the Eagles as they finalise their preparations for the Nations Cup campaign, which gets underway with a tough match against Egypt on January 12.

“They were kicking us right, left and centre. It was a difficult game but a good preparation match for us,” Peterside said.

    Interesting Read:

what is all this criticism people, Zambia is a very decent team. Ask an Egyptian! they were the reason we are not playing the world cup this summer.
I think you guys should be optimistic, just falling in the same group as ours means you will be our partner in the final!!
2006 Final: Egypt v I.Coast (were together in one group)
2008 Final: Egypt v Cameroon (were together in one group)
Sadly for you though, Egypt won both the group stage match and the final in both cases :P

Good luck from Egypt, may the best win ;)

FEW WEEKS LATER THE SAME NORTH KOREA TEAM THAT LOST TO ZAMBIA BEAT KESHI’S MALI 1-0, IN DOHA. I WONDER WHERE ALL IS THIS PANIC IS COMING FROM. Floyd the games may not be on ZNBC but Supersport will certainly beam all the matches live so we shall watch. Zambia’s game against Tunisia on Wednesday 13 January is live on SS3A kick off 20 00 hours.
And FAZ President Kalusha Bwalya and Assistant coach George Lwandamina have confirmed Zambia played very particularly in the first half.
Kalusha: ”It was a fantastic practice. We had good ball control in the first half and the second half was even better.”
Lwandamina: ”The game was OK, we played well especially in the first half where we had more possession. Nigeria came into the game second half. The game showed we are making steady progress although more needs to be done with coordination. We need to work on coordination, we failed to coordinate well in the second half but the fitness levels are high.”
Subs: Kalilo Kakonje in fo Mweene, Emmanuel Mayuka in for Jacob Mulenga, Collins Mbesuma in for James Chamanga, Isaac Chansa in for Rainford Kalaba and Clifford Mulenga in for Felix Katongo.
Negatives: Second half of late Zambia has struggled to coordinate particularly after the substitutions. We need to master that 4-3-3.
Positives: No goals conceded against high quality opposition.

Special praise: FAZ for organising the match.

  52. Fred shimbi on Thu, 7th Jan 2010 8:43 AM

A draw against the Green Eagles is a morale boosting result, the players must be psyched and drilled to believe in themselves before playing Tunisia and Cameroon. We are in for a surprise, I am optimist and I would like to urge all the pessimists to convert and have confidence in our Team. The Copper Bullets, “CHIPOLOPOLO” can pull major surprises and upsets in Angola.

It looks like Clifford has to prove himself if he has to get the nod for a starting place in the team ahead of Felix. HR knows that Felix was one of the key performers in the qualifiers and Clifford has just come back in the team. I think this is good for competition though.

I just hope Sunzu can stand the real test if he gets to play against Tunisia. The Tunisians play a tactical game and they are very quick off the counter. Against Tunisia you need players that can read the game and not just physic.

This is according to the Times of Zambia. It seems Thomas Nyirenda was played in central defence i.e. if the Times of Zambia report is true. It further reports that Zambia had 2 chances of scoring in the 15 minute through Jacob Mulenga and in the 57 minute through Given

MartyUSA :Now we have believers. Ha Ha Ha.

Typical of Zambian supporters, good result brings chimwela. Anyway all the best to chipolopolo, guys my heart is in my mouth until that very first game. I feel that will show us what could be in store for us or not….

  66. Kabanda on Thu, 7th Jan 2010 10:04 AM

a fair result. A win is a great result.
If we celebrate a draw, then we are going no where. What we will get at the AFCON is three draws, zero goals , three points and an early exit once again.

There is something called a goal. that is the main goal, to get our goals and frustrate our opponents from reaching their goals.

I hope to see goals in the next game. A quadruple will be good tonic at the back of a VERY competitive match.

On my above post it seems the times of Zambia have left or forgotten Sunzu cause there are only 10 players excluding the subs

I have just been to the kick off website where I read an article entitled ” Zambia hold Nigeria”. Its surprising to read some of the comments some Nigerian fans rate Zambia lowly. I fore-see shocking results in Angola.
From what I see now the so-called big teams in our group, Tunisia and Cameroun will not have it easy. I see our boys doing fine and probably making it to the second round. I just have this feeling Chipolopolo will this time around make it to second round. I maybe wrong.
Some of our boys have now enough AFCON experience and I dont think they will be uneasy this time. The likes of Musonda, Mweene, Katongos brothers, Chansa, Chamanga, Mbesuma, Kalaba, Chintu, Mulenga (Jacob) have been to one or two AFCONs. So experience is there.

I agree Billy, a lot of the boys though still young have big stage experience and Afcon experience. That nonsense of being star struck on the feild should not be there anymore. I’m a little uncomfortable with our defence though. Sunzu for me does not make the grade at this level. The possibility of being star struck is most likely in players like Dennis and Nyirenda but lets hope for the best they might just be the surprse package like Mbola turned out to be. 19:30 on the 13th of january wil be determing day and time.

Ba Zamfoot i like your heading, its the Best…”Nigeria hold Zambia”……not the way other media is writing…”Zambia hold Nigeria”.

this simply shows that Zambia was (and is) the Better team…i believe in the boys, they will deliver at Afcon….!

    One Zambia One Chipolopolo!

BA RENARD, YOUR SUNZU ISNT NATIONAL TEAM MATERIAL PSE, TAKE HIM TO YOUR DIV. 4 CLUB IN RURAL FRANCE.SO U CAN SEE THAT WE HAVE THE PLAYERS TO PLAY FOR ZAMBIA, ITS ONLY THE QUALITY COACH WE ARE LUCKING.HOPE WE WONT SEE JACOB BANDA IN GOAL WITH SUNZU AS CAPTAIN. MA RUBBISH, MASIPA
I concur with you on Sunzu.I do not regard this player highly. We have got better players than him in Zambia.Anyway big teams will be surprised in this competition and I can foresee a team from Southern African like Angola,Malawi,Mozambique or Zambia lifting this African cup of Nations. But most probable Zambia will lift the cup and Go Our boys.

The Only time the Africa cup was held in Southern Africa it was won by a Southern African time, This is the Second time and i have a strong feeling it will be remain in Southern Africa. The Africa cup has been held 26 times out of which the 17 times the cup has remained in the region ( 11 times by the host). I have hope.

  77. Sikelemi on Thu, 7th Jan 2010 1:09 PM

Here is an extract on Underdogs at this years AFCON.
‘Zambia is another team capable of getting tongues wagging at this year’s tournament; led by the South African PSL record goal scorer, Collins Mbesuma, and the talented Chris Katongo up front, opposition defenders will have a nightmare trying to keep this partnership at bay.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to talk about minnows and favourites on the African continent, as teams are constantly improving and the gap between the best and the chasing pack continues to diminish. Perhaps this is the year of the underdogs, and the neutral supporter will have a tournament to savour in Angola.’

Predictions do not always come out true, but my premonition or prediction is that their will be two teams in the final and these teams are neighbours. One of these two teams is the host. Am not dreaming this is a possibility, lets look at the fixtures, if Zambia comes out second in the group D and Angola is first in their group A.

  78. ROK on Thu, 7th Jan 2010 1:22 PM

It is not surprising for Zambia to hold the super eagles after all. Those of you who can remember, in the mid 70′s, at one time Zambia wired Nigeria 5-1 and that is a lesson that made Nigeria go to the drawing board but fortunately for them, they seem to have learned their lessons well and more importantly, they used the right drawing board which is still yielding positive results. I am saying it is not suprising because, until quite recently, Zambia NEVER EVER LOST A SINGLE GAME WITHOUT A FIGHT. Those days Zambia never lost a game with hands down and in fact, if one wanted to watch Zambia at her best, let the opponents score first and then Zed would be attacking wave-after-wave and firing from all cylinders, to borrow uncle Liwewe’s terminology. It would appear we are reviving this spirit and i would personally want to recommend to FAZ to let uncle Dennis Liwewe be attached to the team topsyche the boys and who doesnt know that uncle Dennis is now a consultant as a motivational speaker giving talks to people declared redundant and create hope where the affected people think there is no hope in hell.

demesi :thats some good news for us,wish we could play with a more competetive team like ivory coast not south korea.

Demesi Two World Cups ago South Korea reached the semi-finals of the World Cup. They are a very good side and probably the best in Asia currently. They may not have one or two of their best players during this African tour but the are still a good side.
I can assure you Ivory Coast can have a tough time playing these boys. Please re-check your facts.

Research well, sibs, S.Korea is a very good team.In fact there style of play is similar to that of Tunisia as they also do alot of running through the wings. It will definitely be a good training for Zambia.

We’ve been talking about the formations for along time here, HR is yet to prove that his formation can yield any positive results other than neutral results. Going back through the games gentleman the stark evidence is there. I would urge HR to think carefully (no doubt he does), i do understand there are positives in using it and i don’t doubt the guys can do it. But, are we trying too hard to be something we are not? Anybody in Zambia can tell you what jersey number plays what position on the field and what their role is, and those “traditional” systems are ingrained in players from an early age i’m sure. Are we trying too hard to be something we are not, because i would rather we are comfortable in our roles that we know inside out, because that’s half the battle… George is quoted as saying, we still need to work on coordination. If we aren’t 100% confident at this stage, isn’t it too late?

Great an mighty is our Chipolopolo, for me i only have one national soccer team – Chipolopolo, win or lose it will always be my team and will always get my highest expecation and support to achieve … i have always refused to be hopeless no matter the situation no matter the team selection, no matter the FAZ team in place … am not a soccer cadre but a patriotic Zambian Soccer Fan … always Chipolopolo at heart … and all that is Zambian … GO Zambia you can do it even better …. God bless the Republic and Shalom

Everyone is talking formation, what has 4-4-2 won us? Everyone says our players are better suited for the 4-3-3, so we cant adapt to new formations? Then u wonder why players fail abroad?? You guys need to stop sticking to one thing and change or adapt to new situations. Renard is the coach he has his formations, going forward you guys should tell FAZ to add the question of formations in their interview process, they should HIGHLIGHT THE FACT THAT ZAMBIAN PLAYERS ARE ONLY ADEPT TO THE 4-4-2…….

  84. Seen from afar on Thu, 7th Jan 2010 6:30 PM

Kk11, the 442 has won us every game we won! Every game we lost we played 433. I’m not trying to rock the boat, but the truth is there i’m afraid. I would love to say it’s working but i can’t see that it is. Therefore we must address this. It’s not about being able to adapt, it’s about doing things that are suitable for us to be successful.

I don’t know what more to say, Whisper, Justice and i have talking about this for awhile and the thing is, we have yet to be proven wrong. I don’t know what more to say, but i hope people are aware. I’ll leave this topic alone because all i want to do is support. If there is an issue, then i’ll ask questions.. I still have the utmost confidence in the guys!

  85. jc on Thu, 7th Jan 2010 7:08 PM

HR should still use Thomas Nyirenda and Kampamba in central defence in the friendly against South Korea and guige them further.

  86. kk11 on Thu, 7th Jan 2010 11:19 PM

    @Seen from afar
I see where u are coming from, but u can not say every game we have won is 4-3-3, thats not a true statement. The other thing is we have not made it to the world cup or won AFCON using this formation so maybe a change is in order.

The cocky Nigerians should also remember not only the 1970 5-1 bashing, but that they failed to qualify for the 1986 Nations Cup in Egypt because Zambia beat them 1-0 , when Jack’african pele’ Chanda unleashed a scorcher..that according to Dennis Liwewe…and I was in zimbabwe listening to the commentary….”Chanda beat Rufai hands down”..this was after the same Nigeria team failed to beat Zambia in Nigeria..0-0 scoreline….I just dusted another record…remember Libya 1982 Africa Cup..when the KKXI(Zambia) thrashed Nigeria 3-0. And those doubters must also revisit the day when Cameroon saw hell in Lusaka when when Michael Chabala scored a hattrick against an Indomitbale Lions team that had just come from a rather succesful 1982 world Cup..remember Zambia demolishing Cameroon 4-1 in Lusaka, and drawing them 1-1 in Yaounde?? ladies and gents..5-1 aggregate.
Where is my Zambia??? Let us not continue to be the laughing stock of people who forget history and gnash their their teeth..they are a nothing ..these people…Remind them of the Italian Job….when Zambia manhandled the italian olympic team in Seoul..4-1….come on ZAMBIA!!!!!
