The Moroka Swallows striker, once South Africa’s most revered goal merchant on for in form James Chamanga, grabbed the all important goal to send the Chipolopolo camp into delirium as they continue to shape up in South Africa in readiness for the AFCON in January.
Zambia was billed to play their next friendly game against Malawi on January 3 before winding up their preparations with Word Cup qualifiers South Korea on January 9 just 3 days before their opening match on January 12 against Tunisia at the AFCON.
However, the tiny Southern African neighbour has opted out and play Emmannuel Adebayor’s Togo on the same date.
This afternoon, Herve Renard a man who has been associated with tinkering of late, partnered clubless Stophilla Sunzu and Chintu Kampamba at the heart of the Zambia defence and was rewarded with a clean sheet.
Kennedy Mweene as usual started in goal with Joesph Musonda and Emmanuel Mbola as full backs. On the wings, the Frenchman deployed Chris Katongo and Clifford Mulenga.
Rookie defender Thomas Nyirenda was played in the defensive midfield role while Isaac Chansa was in his favoured midfield attacking role.
Chamanga partnered Holland based Jacob Mulenga up front.
Rainford Kalaba went in for Chris Katongo in the second period as Mbesuma who scored with less than a quarter of an hour remaining on the clock to secure a morale boosting narrow win.

One thing is for sure Mulenga, Chris,Mbola,Musonda, Mweene are starters while the rest
is anyones Geuss. I think Issac might also be back in the starting lineup. Intersting lineup thos and great to see Mbesuma still has it, there is a reason Renard calls these guys who do not start for their clubs. After close to 2 years together he knows his team and they know each other, glad we have friendlies so he can try different combos. at least our D is not conceeding goals……

well done, if Mbesuma is in form we have a chance to go far. I also like the team HR used, he gave a chance to players who have not been given one. The only worry will be the defensive midfield , Nyirenda, Sunzu might too raw to stop the likes Geremi, Song , Eto’o…..Isaac and Chavuta are attacking midfielders…..hope HR has plan for this maybe Francis Kasonde. Sinkala would have the job but it is not worth it dwelling on that.

Good morale boosting win. Mozambique is not an easy team these days. Zamfoot please kindly get details where this match was played. I tried the whole afternoon to get details so that i could go and watch the game.
Also hoping the will be no media blackout for the next friendly game.

Just saw Felix Katongo’s car in the post…wow, wow, the boy has a Brain. Even though he hasn’t had a good spell at clubs ,he has managed to save money. Well done, hope other players will start to think like that not ama hule fye….like this even people will treat players with respect and will stop paying them peanuts..

This is a very good result for us as we prepare for afcon and i would like to congratulate HR for this result.I am sure this proves a point for those that thought it was useless to call Mbesuma who is not featuring for his club and other clubless players,i have confidence in mbesuma for as long as he can kick the ball. I think HR is trying to find the right central defence patnership and a holding midfielder and i wouldnt be too comfortable with stophila in central defence cos the guy usually gets tired and disappears and am sure the next game he will give chance to NJOVU AND KASONDE in the holding role.i hope our mbesuma also gets in a goal getting mood and am sure this trip to angola will different from the last two. Monk P, I dont understand stand you at all. You mean buying a car is saving money or investing, not at all. A car is not an ‘asset’ perse. A car can go in just one day. Invest in other things like property not expensive cars, that’s senseless. I may be wrong.

I just hope He did not get a loan to buy the car, but if He spend his own money then he must have some money saved up or coming in in order to buy such an expensive car. Anyway any details about the goal Mbesuma scored? just trying to see if it was a fluke or hard work by the Zambian lads payed off.

Its good to see Mbesuma scoring, but the defensive midfield position is still a big question mark going into the tournament. I can aslo see Siyinga being dropped, especially if HR is prepared to use Sunzu as a utility player i.e. defensive midfield or central defense. Francis kasonde might come in and fill in the defensive midfield role, but I don’t know how well he will do against formidable opposition like Cameroon or the counter attacking speed of the Tunisians. I haven’t been a big supporter of Mbesuma of late, but I am glad to see him scoring. I am also glad to see HR looking at Clifford Mulenga… who based on his form deserves to be looked at. We’ll see if he makes the final team, but it is good to see HR employing wingers in his strategy..I think he is finally seeing the light. One thing though, if HR gets Zambia to the semi-finals are we still going to fire him???? Actually he might just leave…since his resume will be officially “good”. I think a semi-final finish should be considered basis to stay on, qtr final finish would require some discussion. Winning the cup; we can forget about him coming back to coach Zambia, the amount of money we would have to fork over and the offers would come streaming in for him. Bane lets hope Zambia pulls a Greece ’04.

Good result indeed.although mbesuma scored,i still expect jacob and chamanga to start the first game, what renard does is that during friendly games prior to a match,he usually plays the players and system he will use during the match,so do not be surprised when you see stoppilla sunzu in central defence and thomas nyirenda in midfield in the first game against tunisia..

I am so pleased to see Zambia win against Mozambiaque who has improved tremendiously. I feel the team can improve as we go. Two weeks before the AFCON kick off. Lets hope for the better. Our Gruop is tricky and Zambia can surprize our selves by emerging contenders for the group and for the 2nd and 3rd and final rounds. His team selection was good and good to know that he used Clifford Mulenga on the wings. We hope to see more of such changes and improvement day by day. Good result for Morale building. Go Zambia.

I hope they are also practising set pieces, thats free-kicks,corners and penalties,we missed a penalty during the qualifiers, missed a penalty during the cosafa and we were beaten on penalties during the cecafa,we cannot afford to miss such opportunities during the afcon because if we do,the teams their will punish us,they should also identify who their first choice penalty taker is,we saw in the home game against rwanda that after we were awarded a penalty, both mbesuma and katongo went for the ball which to me meant that they had not discussed it before the game, every team has a first choice penalty taker, coming to free kicks,do we have a player in our current squad who can score from a free-kick outside the area? I dont think so,the only player i have seen who consistently scores from free-kicks is kennedy chola but unfortunately he is not in the squad,i saw HH score some wonderful free-kicks when he was at lusaka dynamos but i do not think he will be in the team, kalaba and chivuta are also of capable of delivering a decent free-kick,when you are playing against teams like cameroon and tunisia, defensively they are well organised so set- pieces can sometimes be the only way to get a goal,so they must practice very hard, practice makes perfect…

This is good news. This is the purpose for friendlies. Assess players and formations. Although I still doubt HR’s coaching pedigree, this has been the biggest failure by ba FAZ…not enough friendlies much less, formidable opponents for HR to try out his tactics. Hopefully, they can find a replacement for Malawi.

Erick Mwanza is at it again he thinks we did already the malawi game was nonstarter.
CHIPOLOPOLO’S proposed international friendly match against Malawi has been cancelled.
And Zambia, who were by press time yesterday expected to play Mozambique, have recorded a full house at the Johannesburg training camp.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) communications officer Erick Mwanza said the Malawi friendly was cancelled after the two parties failed to agree on terms.
“Malawi Football Association insisted that we play Malawi in Blantyre but we wanted the match to be played in Johannesburg,” Mwanza said.
“In the best interest of the team we decided we could not waste two day of training travelling to and from Malawi.
“We are now looking at other options but the match against South Korea is on for January 9 but the venue will be confirmed within 24 hours.”
Malawi are due to host Togo on January 2 after facing Egypt away in Cairo today and later play Ghana in Mbabane on January 5.
Meanwhile, Chipolopolo captain Christopher Katongo including the Israeli based duo of striker Emmanuel Mayuka and midfielder William Njobvu have joined camp in South Africa.
Team manager Solly Pandor said Katongo of German 2.Bundesliga side Armenia Bielefeld arrived in Johannesburg on Sunday from Zambia while the Israeli duo arrived yesterday morning from their respective clubs in Israel.
“I picked up Mayuka and William Njobvu. They arrived this morning yesterday at the airport from Israel,” Pandor said.
Mayuka plays for Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv while Njobvu is with Israeli second division team Hapoel Kiryat Shmone.
“Christopher Katongo, Felix Katongo and Rainford Kalaba all arrived on Sunday and trained with us today yesterday and their arrival, it means we have a full house of 26 players.”
Pandor said second choice goalkeeper Kalililo Kakonje who got married on Christmas Day is also in camp after joining the team on Sunday.
Chipolopolo set-up its final phase of Orange Africa Cup of Nations training in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Chipolopolo were by press time yesterday afternoon expected to play Mozambique in a friendly match in Johannesburg.
Mozambique are also camped in South Africa ahead of the tournament in Angola kick-off on January 10.

“Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”…inventor Thomas Edison. I hope Zambia follows this mantra towards as they go to the Africa Cup. It is evident that the talent is there but the caveat is that most teams do not win on talent alone. If you ask me I am in love with the style of Portugal over Germany, I have always loved watching the flair of Spain since the days they had Emilio Butragueno, then the spain team with martin Vasquez, Zubizaretta, Hierro, Enrique etc..these spain teams always had it…..What what is the difference now…they have now realized that they are a team,,,spain is probably the most complete team, they have been together from the youth system, they pass as if they know each other telepathly…This is how I see Zambia evolving as a team…Team play, and playing with heart(perspiration). I see Renard seems to be doing well with the Defence, because that was my main concern with Zambia for a while. I think the results while disappointing in the qualifiers..we see teams actually laboured to breach the Zambia defence…Now if the midfield can do its job, then we can account for ourselves well this will relieve the pressure at the back, and open up our movement going forward even if we choose to use the wings or attack from the middle of the pack. In short, I just hope the players at least this crop of players read each, their teammates’ movement, cover for each, and fight for each ball..because possession usually results in goals.
I second the need for working on set pieces in defence and attack…we should as Chipolopolo have many arsenals at our disposal…do away with predictability…Even though i think Zed lost a great chance to be at their first world Cup especially after that Cairo draw…a good outing in Angola will be a springboard towards better days ahead…i think HR is doing his homework, so I wish we will have a good training regime and also an injury free pre-tournament. By the way what is the prognosis for Nyambe Mulenga?
Fred shimbi on Tue, 29th Dec 2009 7:57 AM
We need more goals from our Team particularly from our Strikers. Its great to hear that Collins scored after a long spell of blanks, I’m certain this will boost his confidence and morale during the 2010 AFCON. I would like to wish the Chipolopolo Boys to have a “No Fear Approach” as they meet Cameroon & Tunisia in Angola. Whatever happened in the past is water under the bridge/let bygones be bygones, you can do it, yes you can.

Eric Mwanza seems to suggest that we are all dull and he is the most intelligent. He should not be creating an impression that it was FAZ’s conscious effort to cancel the friendly against Malawi when in fact it was the latter that declined to play the former. He should be ashamed to be talking about cancellations of friendly matches at the eleventh hour when our friends are busy playing friendlies. It is high time that these people started utilising services of FIFA approved match agents.
Mabbwana on Tue, 29th Dec 2009 8:38 AM
Great result, morale boosting win. I wish FAZ had registered this friendly with FIFA for the sake of the rankings especially that the coming rankings will include the Zanzibar loss. With the little publicity it got, I doubt it was.
HR seems to be a master of surprise when it comes to team selection. Like someone mentioned above, usually he goes with what he deploys in training.
Am glad they won this one with a clean sheet, but I could never have predicted Nyirenda to have be given a clear chance in the holding midfield role and didnt think Sunzu would be contending for a place in central defence ahead of Dennis despite him having put up a man of the match performance in the same position during the CECAFA.
I would have loved HR to be consolidating the team now unlike still being experimental in key positions. I still feel Sunzu is not a natural in that position and he will be exposed against top shelf strikers. We had all the qualifiers, COSAFA and he only started playing Sunzu and Nyirenda in those positions at CECAFA. I don’t think the few games ahead a enough to help these lads quickly adapt to these positons which they dont even play in when at their clubs.
Just my thoughts….
Congrats to HR and the lads, a winning is always a good thing. Untrusted Erick said they had a good game and created alot of chances.

Reports from the local press in Zambia are that we might play a friendly with Benin on 03/10/2010 awaiting confirmation. If that comes out true then it will be a plus on our preparations as Benin is far much better than Little Malawi, Latest results for Benin, Sudan 1-2 Benin (Q), Benin 1-0 Ghana (Q), Benin 1-1 Mali (Q), Benin 1-1 Gabon (Friendly), Benin 1-0 Sudan (Q). This team will give a good game, they gave Ghana a good run in the qualifiers. If this game suffices, then I will post updates on this game as am able to watch Benin TV.
Coming to the Mozabique game, well done, Keep up with the good preparations. Mr HR and the coaching Bench, may you pysch the team not to fear any one team. Cameroun is beatable. I will not go into which player should be dropped or maintained, the Tech bench is more capable to make those decisions. Whoever he picks must deliver. Best wishes.

“Mental agility” beats “skill” every time. If you believe in your own abilities first, God given skills will simply flow from that. The majority of you will probably agree with me that the common thread that ran/runs through my “picks of the day” below is THEIR MENTAL TOUGHNESS & SELF BELIEF first:
Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Aka, Pele)—–Brazil
Diego Maradona—-Argentina
Roger Milla—-Cameroon
Ronaldo Luis—-Brazil
George Weah—–Liberia
David Beckham—–England
Zinedine Zadine—- France
Didier Drogba—–Ivory Coast
Samule Eto’o—–Cameroon
Emmanuel Adebayor—–Togo
Even our own; Kalusha Bwalya.
Some of them were/are not even very big players in terms of physical stature (Maradona, Beckham, for instance) and yet every time step/stepped on the filed they exude/exuded unparalleled confidence about themselves. Zambian players can learn a thing or two from these notables.
Go out there and act like you belong!!!!!!!!!

Because one can score and still play his worst game and then he gets a chop when the final team is choosen and then the fans start attacking the Coach.
Though personally i feel our weakest area is the Central defence and defensive midfield. This is where HR headches will come from.

In “physical stature” I had in mind the likes of Thierry Henry of France and Renaldo Luis of Brazil. But I think you can still agree with me that Maradon’s skills, more likely than not, flowed so easily from his confidence on the ball than his intimidating physical presence, right?

I think it is OK for HR to trail out players in positions he is not sure about in such games, than at AFCON. This is the reason we are having these friendly games. This will also help HR before he names the final Squad of 23 players that will go to Angola. So far the only ones sure are the 3 goalkeepers and some regulars
I feel the competition is tough as all the 26 players want to go to AFCON. Anyway we will see who will make the final squad on Friday. I would suggest that the 3 players who would be dropped be put on standby and have them travel to Angola and continue training with the team just in case of injuries. Do we have a goakeeper on standby?

Tell me guys, i always thought Chansa was a defensive midfield player, does he favor a more offensive role??? Good to see he got some game time finally as he probably needs a good run out for Zambia.
As did Clifford on the left wing i presume, while Chris no doubt came in to fill the right wing hole that we have. Kalaba and Felix are both in need of some playing time aswell. I wonder how Kenndedy Mudenda actually performed in Kenya the other month, because we don’t really have allot of options on the right, but if HR liked him enough he could have brought him for back up in this position…
Am very pleased to hear HR used a 442, if you think how little most of the players have played together, it’s great that kept a clean sheet, scored and won. Bravo.

I don’t see what is wrong with us wearing white. Ghana wear white and there is no white in their flag. White is considered a neutral colour, which is why some teams wear it despite their flags not containing the colour. I’m not so much worried about the colour of our Jersey but the quality to me is an issue. Faz really needs to sit down and talk to Nike cos the quality is terrible.

There is too much excitement here. Guys, we are not going anywhere far at the Afcon or in development as long as we continue accepting mediocrity. Brace yourselves for heartaches!!!!
Justice Kafusha on Tue, 29th Dec 2009 4:22 PM
Because Ghana are using white instead of their national colors does not mean Zambia should do the same. That is the problem of Ghana and it’s supporters. You tell FAZ have failed to inform NIKE about our colors
To me it is important for anyone representing Zambia to be dressed in National colors, most countries do that

Anyway I guess you have a point. Ine like I said the white can stay, but they should also re-introduce the copper and black, or just the copper strip. Maybe keep the white as the alternate. The deal with Nike is also pretty questionable, pantu these guys i.e. FAZ act like they can’t make requests or any decisions regarding the jersey. We need to get our prestige back, pantu these companies are taking us for granted.. given our footballing stature. When does this Nike contract expire anyway?

I have not even seen the car, my contribution is based on advising our boys cause of what we have seen in the past. There are many who used to shine when they were still active but are now beggers to such an extent that they can not even afford shake shake
We need to give advice to our players and not just look at them and then laugh at them when they stop playing football
Of course Felix can buy what ever he wants it is his money. Litana, Emmanuel Zulu, Harrison Chongo spent their money they way they wanted cause it was their money. But look at them now

I heard that Zambia would have scored alot of Goals but as usual POOR finnishing was with our Team. So,I believe our Team as not as bad as we potray it to be,its only the fever of facing a goalkeeper which we have pproblems with.If all the players can have the confidence of wanting to push the ball behind the net, then we can be good.
Justice Kafusha on Tue, 29th Dec 2009 6:14 PM
I will never stop to give advice to Zambian football players but it is up to the players that are visiting this site to either take my advce and that of other bloggers who think about them now and after their careers.
Amuna Onzuna on Tue, 29th Dec 2009 6:17 PM
Its sad that Hangunyu and Signs want to be treated like stars already when they havent even featured in the main Team.Where are they?,why do they have to lose a chance like this one?
Anonymous on Tue, 29th Dec 2009 6:23 PM
wonder why these two players did not show up? Do you think they are entertaining ideas of playing for Angola and Nigeria respectively..(Hangunyu and Chibambo)

You know Awe when I look at my old football magazines I really feel proud when I look at how Zambia dressed at the 1990 African Nations Cup in Algeria where we won bronze. The boys look smart I am telling you, especially with the green jersey with red black and Orange strips. I was really proud

I understand where you are coming from ba Justice. Maybe we should go back to our retro Jerseys, but again I don’t know how FAZ sign a contract for Kits without having any say so as to quality or colour of the strip. Just recently we saw pictures or our U20 wearing ama blue tracksuit that looked like they had nothing to do with Zed.

Brother if this FAZ continues we shall see our senior national team dressed in animal skins. Ala bwafya

Nothing personal fans! The GRZ must be fully invloved with FAZ for presentable jersey! Its not only FAZ let us all be engageful!!!

I won’t stop crying on Sinkala being left out of the 2010 Afcon team. I hate it so much especially when i watch our team demolish bafana bafana in that memorable 3-1 win. Chansa, Sinkala and Bakala combined so well in midfield. Its a pitty our tax payers money keeps to be spent on clubless players as in Sunzu. Its like FAZ is not answerable to any one. For how long is this mess going to continue when it comes to team selection. I remember at one point in Cameroon, that country’s president demanded for Patrick Mboma to be in the team when the coach was almost leaving him behind with reasons based to himself and not football, Mboma went on and performed nicely for his country. To be honest i hate the way FAZ blacklists innocent players who just try to express their grievances and those of others.
Amuna Onzuna on Thu, 31st Dec 2009 2:21 PM
BUT WE HEAR THAT SINKALA HAS ISSUES OF DISCPLINE WITH THE COACH,DONT YOU THINK ITS THE PLAYER WHO IS SUPPOSED TO APOLOGISE TO THE COACH FOR HIS OUTBURST?.WE HEAR ISAAC CHANSA HAS RECONCILED WITH RENARD,WHY CANT SINKALA DO THE SAME?,WHAT IF THE COACH INCLUDES HIM AND SINKALA GOES ON TO SCORE IN HIS OWN NET? OR HE DISTURBS TEAM UNIT?
Uzzi on Thu, 31st Dec 2009 2:46 PM
I still feel we are just being so hard on sinkala. Issues of discipline have not been handled nicely in our Zambian team. I have noticed a lot of inconsistencies when discipline is being instituted in our team, i.e the Mbesuma saga, drinking whilst required in camp, i mean we need not to have any sacred cows when it comes to carrying out the so called ‘discipline’. In short, the approach by FAZ should be that of reconciliatory and not punishment. We dont have enough good experienced players in this country, hence we need to sort out our internal wrangles before we can go for any ‘war’, otherwise, we will have ourselves to blame again.
