In the last few days there has been ‘war of words’ fromChipolopolo Boys coach Herve Renard directed at FAZ vice president Emmanuel Munaile. Kachepa has it that the two fell out early this year when the Malole Member of Parliament questioned the Frenchman’s credentials and tactical ability. Surprisingly enough Munaile did not get the backing of his boss and former teammate at Mufulira Wanderers, Kalusha Bwalya.
And this made Munaile take a back foot from FAZ affairs for and handed over the responsibility and duties of spokesperson to Erick Mwanza who is now the official FAZ Spokesperson & Communications Officer.
Munaile’s technical committee which comprises of 12 members- Herve Renard is part of the committee- has been inactive for some time in contrast to the time when Kalusha was the chairman during the Teddy Mulonga era. With Zambia’s poor run of results, Munaile summoned the technical committee for a meeting last week and they agreed that changes should be made to the national team bench and that resolution was announced by Munaile himself at weekly briefing at Football House.
But over the weekend, Kalusha issued a statement in one of the daily tabloids that no changes will be made to the technical bench.
Since Monday, Renard has been quoted in various national newspapers hitting back at Munaile and Zamfoot Crew has decided to re-publish some of the quotes attributed to the Frenchman.
Renard: hey (technical staff) did a lot of work to qualify the team for the African Cup, but now they want to destroy them
Renard shows sympathy for Lwandamina-Todays’ Times of Zambia wrote
He said despite the team’s qualification to the AFCON from a group that was made up of Algeria and Egypt, there had been a lot of negative reporting on his squad and cited last week’s announcement by FAZ vice-president Emmanuel Munaile to reshuffle the technical staff before the AFCON championship.
“They (technical staff) did a lot of work to qualify the team for the African Cup, but now they want to destroy them. Even you, how would you feel if management announces that they will fire you? This is how George (Lwandamina) and the other Zambian on the bench are feeling. But with me it gives the strength.
“In everything I do, I always want to do my very best because at the end of my career, I want to achieve a lot of things,” he said.
Renard reaffirmed his target of guiding the squad past the group stage, a feat Zambia last achieved during the 1996 in South Africa when the Kalusha Bwalya-captained side finished third after beating Ghana 1-0 in the play-off.
“The target is simple and we don’t want to hide anything. The target is to reach the second round, but I think you know that it won’t be easy because we are playing three good teams. Don’t just talk about Cameroun, Tunisian and forget about Gabon, they are also a very good side.
“We are putting the target very high, remember for 13 years Zambia has not qualified for the second round,” he said.
HR: Go talk to Munaile
In Wednesday’s backpage of the Times of Zambia, they wrote, Herve Renard, who was at the time leading the players in a full lap jogging, said reporters who wanted to find out how the team was doing must talk to FAZ spokesperson Emmanuel Munaile whom they had been quoting of late.
“Hey guys you should respect us… If you want anything, go to Munaile whom you have been talking to,” quipped Renard referring to the FAZ spokesperson’s statement that changes would be made to the technical bench before the AFCON finals.
Renard continued jogging with the players for another round but after he found the Times crew still standing by the touch line, he repeated his instruction to George Lwandamina to lock the gates behind the reporters.
HR: I ‘ve heard too much stupidity
“It training is perfect like this,” Renard said. “I have heard too much stupidity and if some people want to fight against us…well…”
Asked who he was referring to, Renard said: “I am here to work with the team for the sake of Zambian football.”
And in today’s The Post, Football administrator Simataa Simataa has hit back at Renard to show a bit of respect.
Simataa yesterday described Renard’s decision to train Chipolopolo under lock and key because of what he termed ‘stupid’ distraction as rude and impolite.
Commenting on Renard’s remarks on Tuesday that stupid comments had led to a secret camping for Chipolopolo, Simataa advised the Frenchman to use his native language if he was not fluent in English.
Great Kalu issued a statement over the weekend that no-one will be sacked
“The man should refrain from using words such as stupid. If he is not fluent with the language, let him use French which will be interpreted. It is rude and impolite, he can’t get away by insulting us,” he said.
Simataa said there was no secret about Renard’s record as Chipolopolo trainer which had about 30 matches and some appalling results in 18 months with over 70 players tested.
“There is no secret about camp. The Zambian people are entitled to know what he is doing with their team. After all, it is tax payers money that will fund the trip to Angola which most probably will be wasted going by his performance. I’m very disappointed that he would call me stupid,” he added.
Simataa challenged Renard to tell the nation who he was calling stupid because people had made statements for and against him.
He said Renard cannot black out the Zambian people from monitoring the preparations of their team.
“If he is justified to have a secret camp, an arrangement should be made where he briefs the press everyday and answers questions. To simply black out people is not right,” said Simataa.
And in the Daily Mail they reported meanwhile, the team has continued training behind closed doors at Licef School in Lusaka.
Guards manning the gate at Licef barred journalists from entering the school premises, saying they were instructed not to allow anyone inside by the national team technical bench.
“The problem in this country is that journalists want to write every time. Sometimes they write bad things. This is very bad. I am a journalist myself,” the guard said in halting English before drifting into Nyanja, which he spoke fluently.
How it started!!!!!!!!!!!
Munaile told journalists at a briefing on Wednesday that adjustments are necessary for the team to travel to Angola with a common purpose, adding that the association was carrying out consultations and will soon effect the changes.
But when contacted on last Thursday, Munaile said consultations were still going on and the association will announce the changes once the right replacements are identified.
“I made it clear that we are still consulting and when we complete, we’ll call you (media). A lot of people will be consulted and certain names will be floated…so when we finish, we will let you know,” Munaile said.
CONFUSION has erupted between the Zambia soccer team coaching bench and FAZ executive committee members after the announcement that the association intends making changes ahead of the 2010 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals slated for Angola.
And some executive committee members have expressed sadness with the manner issue was handled as some of them learnt of it through the media while insiders at Football House have said Coach Herve Renard is upset with the decision and has thus stopped answering calls from FAZ officials. An executive committee member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that Renard was upset with Vice-president Emmanuel Munaile’s decision to make changes to the technical bench barely three weeks before Africa’s prestigious tournaments kicks off.
Munaile, at a Press briefing on Wednesday said the association was carrying out consultations and would soon effect the changes to the Renard-headed technical bench.
But the FAZ executive committee member said Munaile did not consult other committee members prior to making the announcement and they just got the news through the media.
“Renard is upset and has even stopped answering telephone calls from the technical committee chairperson Munaile because of the decision to make changes to the coaching bench. Even us we were caught by surprise as we just read in the papers that there was such a move,” the committee member said.
FAZ communications officer, Erick Mwanza “Until when such changes are made, it would be premature to comment but even if there is a problem our aim is to ensure that we resolve these problems in the national interest and such things usually arise at the moment I have not received anything to that effect,” Mwanza said.

I wonder why people bring issues when we preparing for big games? Simataa can’t tell me he’s never heard of teams who train behind closed doors. This happens World wide and it will continue to happen. Algeria did that during the last World Cup qualifiers and the Brazillians have done it before several times. Who is Simataa speaking for by saying, “he can’t get way by insulting us?”
If i was in HR shoes i would probabaly do the same thing after the events of last week
Nathan on Thu, 24th Dec 2009 10:53 AM
Very very adenteresting endeed. Well, may i express my views on this matter, i think its better for now that pipo distract the coaching bench so that they concetrate training the team. I mean, we have seen teams train in camera i.e algeria and egypt even other great nations have done this before. Some officials at faz are just there to make sure that the team fails.how can a boss at a company wake up and tell one of his workers that am going fire you next week? Why not just fire that person right there? then some one wakes up again and say that no one will be fired! Then the question comes, who has authority to hire and fire between kalusha bwalya and emmanuel munaile ? So the best thing to do for all the soccer loving people is to keep quite and wait for afcon to finish.maybe HR shuld tone down language and focus on preps. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.
Nathan on Thu, 24th Dec 2009 11:04 AM
Sorry for the typing error and i actualy meant that we do not distract the coaching bench.
Mabbwana on Thu, 24th Dec 2009 11:08 AM
I think enough distraction has been given to the coaching bench already. We need to give them space to prepare the team but this should not mean that they should give us a media black out.
A huge challenge lies ahead of them and they need to concetrate, the Munaile comes and issues statements like those…. He should just have come and said guys you are fired instead of raising all this dust. Now we see that he didint even check it with his boss..
Zima Ndola on Thu, 24th Dec 2009 11:23 AM
Too much talking will not do our team’s preparations good.I think lets leave the team to prepare for the AFCON with a free mind.
SHOOTTER on Thu, 24th Dec 2009 11:39 AM
Any good coach, can do anything if its good for the team. Ghana coach has drop Muntari not because is out of form no, but because is ‘too bossy’ to his team mates and the technical bench just like ‘sinkala’ and the coach knows that the guy is the division master why calling him in the squad.
And Why? every time a big tournament like AFCON is around the corner always something comes out, last time it was TANA being left out in the squad which was in ghana, and it was like a song Tana! Tana! Tana!
Sikelemi on Thu, 24th Dec 2009 11:47 AM
Many things have been said about HR, FAZ and Players this year and may 2010 be a year of serious planning and implementation of the said plans for 2012 AFCON AND WORLD CUP BRAZIL 2014 because we are good at planning but no results to show for those plans. Coming to the current situation between HR and Munaile & co, consider it a blessing that HR is still in charge becoz usually ZAMBIA change coaches B4 major tornaments such as AFCON many examples are there for those who have followed the History, for those who dont know I will avail this info Monday next week. Usually these changes B4 tornaments have led to disappointing outings. I agree with those who have seen the evil in Simatta’s attacks to HR, the many is really from stone age thats why coaches under him are not performing well becoz he does not want to change with time. When did it become a surprise for teams to train in secret, Algeria did recently, Brazil, England, Argentina do it very often. You are lucky it is HR in charge now, given a chance and am sure it will come for us new Zambian young coaches in future not this negative simattaa, all the trainings will be behind closed doors, and no coming near even a Kilometer to the team training sessions. Why you may ask?, football has changed, it is more tacktical and a team must have a serious element of invincibility and surprise to win matches. Simattaa should be the last person to advise the T-bench, coz he is not positive, he always is distractive and talks to much. My advise to Munaile and co, PLIZ concentrate on sorting out player allowances and motivation because we want our players to be well looked after. . Let the team concentrate, FAZ please look into the player and coaches allowances, let them what they will be fighting for. Then we will have reasons to rebuke them if they do not do well. . Am 1000% for chipolopolo to do us proud. Wait Simattaa, Munaile & co will swallow their words.TO EVERYONE CONCERNED ‘TOGETHER WE SHALL WIN or loose, We will still be ZAMBIANS. YES WE CAN, BRAVO HR, TEAM AND POSITIVE THINKING FAZ MEMBERS’. ONE ZAMBIA, ONE CHIPOLOPOLO, ONE NATION, ONE 2010.

If Simaata was a Good Coach/Administrator,his Team (Makumbi Stars) would be doing very well like Lusaka Dynamos being run by Hanif Adams. If anything,it is Simaata who is disrespectfull of Renard and his appointing authority(FAZ).Simaata has personal issues with Kalu, hence his dislike of all things associated to Kalusha.Being a Coach and a Vice president of ZAFCA,he is supposed to encourage and embrace the coach instead of insulting his credentials.

Thanks for a translation Zamfoot, we need a translation for all these childish media statements.
Just want to say, HR is the most important person right now!!!!!!!!!!!! Let him do what he thinks is best, freeze out the media or not let him choose.
He’s not even joined the whole squad so what the journalists are after i don’t know. Kalusha could have brought clarity to this issue long ago, but where was he??? Simataa is the only one who makes sense…
Georgia Russia on Thu, 24th Dec 2009 3:31 PM
i hope simaata is reading this,he is good at talking when he himself has failed to deliver whenever hes been given that opportunity.

I have a proposal why not let that security guard who is also a journalist, but who complains that journalists “write too much, ..too many bad things”…make him an assistant coach, he might just turn out to be a world class coach..Zambias version of Jose Mourinho..the special one.

i want to support HR this time, some times zambian are so careless let the man do his job,if he is to fail we put the blame on him,wen he says stupid distraction thats right i like it,its just too much.players and the coach are busy logging and reporters are busy trying to get the coach comment on petty things.I think its wrong.zambians talk too much and at times these talks are not building.LET THE COACHES AND THE GUYS WORK PLIZ PETTY GAME POLITICS ASIDE.WE DONT HAVE TIME.look at the articlle that guy who was slapped by kalu has wrote today about HR,EFYO BAMIPUMINA LEARN TO APPRECIATE PIPO AT TIME,HR NEED MOTIVATION ALSO,even big pipo like obama they need encouragement.
