Wedson Nyirenda masterminded Zanaco's success and will be looking to the Orange/CAF Champions League next season

Zanaco were Sunday afternoon crowned the 2009 KCM/FAZ Premier League after 1-0 win over Kabwe Warriors despite finishing level on 63 points with Zesco United who thrashed Aggrey Chiyangi’s Chambishi by three goals to nil.

In the second tier, 11 times league Champions, Nkana FC left it late as they narrowly beat Mufulira Blackpool to win promotion back to the top flight.  Kalampa join Nchanga from Division one North while Oswald Mutapa’s Nkwazi and National Assembly are the two clubs from the southern stream.

In a season were Zesco United reached the group stage, one wouldn’t have asked for a better ending as the league went to the wire. Going into this afternoon’s fixtures, Zesco were hoping for a favour from Kabwe Warriors but in-form striker Makundika Sakala did the damage at Railway Grounds as his 26th minute goal was the difference and propelled the bankers to their first league title in 3 years and fifth (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2009) in the 7 years but more importantly, coach Wedson Nyirenda’s three in a row after guiding Zesco in 2007 and 2008.

Champions: Zanaco

Runners UP: Zesco United

Top Scorer: Patrick Kabamba with 20 goals; Kennedy Chola & Edward Museba finished with 11 goals.

Barclays Cup winners: Power Dynamos

Promoted: Nchanga, Nkana, Nkwazi & National Assembly

Relegated: Young Arrows, Nakambala, Chambishi & Zamtel/Roan Utd.

From Trade Fair Ground in Ndola, first half goals from Nicholas Zulu and Jackson Zulu made sure Zega went to the break by a 2-0 caution and late goal from Lottie Phiri in the second half made it three nil up but wasn’t enough as Zanaco had a superior goal difference.

One of the fixtures to look out for next season will be Kalampa v Zanaco.

One of the fixtures to look out for next season will be Kalampa v Zanaco. And the Kitwe derby between Nkana and Power Dynamos.

Both Zesco United and Chambishi left Trade Fair poignant-ed with the latter being demoted to the division one and joining Young Arrows and Nakambala in paving way for newcomers; Nkana, Nchanga, Nkwazi and National Assembly.

With Lusaka Dynamos’ 1-0 win over Forest Rangers confirming their stay in the top flight, all eyes will be on the Konkola Blades versus Zamtel and Roan United versus Young Arrows games/results. One of either Zamtel or Roan United could be relegated.

Congrats to Zanaco. I think they showed their intent right from the start, beating almost every team which came their, and with alot of goals.
They lost grip mid way, but it was the good finishing that has paid off.

They have come out as the best, though one would argue that if Zega didnt have the extra burden of international engangements they would have been top.

Going by what happened in the league, its obvious that Zanaco wont go far in the Champions league if they dont go out to re-enforce their squad. At a time they had injuries in the team, they stopped picking points and were so stretched that they had to fall back on retired Numba. It will be tough for them if they go that route again so they just have to buy some quality players as suspensions and injuries are inevitable.

In all congrats to Wedson and team for taking the cup to Lusaka.

All my goodness-Nkana is back where we belong and i can not hide the joy that has filled my heart.I really hope that we will do our homework so that we avoid relegation next season.Thumbs up to Zanaco and i hope they realise the gravity of the task that lies ahead of them.I should also salute my home township boys for lifting the barclays cup.In short, congrats the teams that deserve to be congratulated and tough luck to the teams that have not done well

    Congratulations Zanaco!!!

I personally would have preferred Zesco represent us in the Champions’ League. But who knows, Zanaco might do better this time around. Like ba Mabbwana, I hope they buy some more players. It’s not enough to just qualify and go out in the early rounds. Do us proud Zanaco and Zesco.

If You Guys had Watched the Warriors vs Zanaco Match, You would be very disappointed with the display by Warriors, without taking anything from Zanaco i must say the game could have gone either way if it wasn’t for the warriors players missing sitters and going to sleep in the second half, the guys were playing as if they had Alredy won and were now defending.
Congrats to Zanaco but i doubt they will perform well in CAF Champions League.

Zesco should have proved their worth when almost the entire zanaco front line was injured. even zesco has been bashed before by teams from botswana but this year they suprised everyone. i hope this time they will be given arabs so that they prove that they can face anyone in africa.

  • CHIMWELA wrote on 30 November, 2009, 10:15

congrats to zanaco for winning the league, they started well along the way injuries killed their rythm but with the return of kalengo things started changing even without kabamba they have done it.

Both Zanaco and Zesco will be in Champions League, and Power in Confederations Cup,Im glad to see Zambian Clubs doing better.Im very disappointed with the Government over the issue of Chingangu, the Guy is a good fighter but for Government to withdraw support they had pledged,Uuuuuhhhh, thats evil. And they couldnt even sing the Nigerian and Zambian National Anthem, shame on Mr.Peter Daka who was guest on Honour at Mulungushi.

I was there as well, I could help but believe that Warriors had sold the game to ZANACO and also the suspect subtitution by the Warriors Coach, Warriors should have won or drawn that game. Anyway, congrats to ZANACO.

My only worry is Nkana’s coming to the Premier league. Lets hope its supporters do not take hooliganism to another level, last time when Nkana lost 1-0 to Kalulushi Modern Stars, its supporters ran amoke even grounding the wall at the Independence stadium in kalulushi. Point should be deducted and any team found tolerating hooliganism should also play its home matches away from home. welcome Nkana, hope you have come to stay now. Reinforce the club.

Ireland just asked FIFA if they can be the 33rd team in South Africa as a result of the controversial Thierry Henry goal…maybe Egypt can ask FIFA to be the 34th team bcause of the extreme violence of the Algeria/Egypt game
