Kalu is reunited with his former boss in football Teddy Mulonga who is now Sports Permanent Secretary

Former Football Association of Zambia president Teddy Mulonga was yesterday sworn in as permanent secretary of the Ministry of Sport, Youth and Child Development.

Mulonga who had a frosty relationship with current FAZ supremo Kalusha Bwalya when he was head of the football mother body has been told by President Rupiah Banda to address the plummeting football standards in the country.

The President told Mulonga: ”You always put your work in the interest of football and your coming will help lift the name of the game. You know the President has taken keen interest in all sports activities.”

The President said Teddy Mulonga was a household name in football and had been taken appropriately to the Ministry of  Sports to help run football with FAZ.

”During your tenure, I watched you carefully. You always lifted Zambia higher than it was under very difficult conditions,” Banda said.

The President who is a keen follower and supporter of football has raised a lot of money for the Kalusha administration but is clearly not happy with the state of football at the moment stating:

”We had hoped that the game against North Korea (Zambia 4-1 win) will lift our spirits but it looks like it was too easy to celebrate. We would like you (Mulonga) to assist.”

And Mulonga has challenged football supporters to move from lip service to tangible material and financial support to football clubs in Zambia if the game is to improve.

”’I would like to challenge Zambian soccer supporters that if you want good performances, why dont you get into supporting sports materially and financially?

With Zambian soccer administration in shambles, it will be interesting to see how Mulonga will fare in lifting the standards of the game.

It will be very interesting to see how the not so great kalu and the politician Teddy mulonga relate over football matters.

If i were RB, i would call the two and counsel them to bury old hatchet. But from the way i know Mr Teddy Mulonga (christian principles, transparency etc) i expect him to operate above pettiness. Great Kalu should forget about the past and learn a thing or two about administration (Mulonga worked at BOZ and Tender Board at highest levels and is very educated) which may be one of the noticeable challenges FAZ currently face. People let’s promote progress above primitivity.

His appointment has come at the time Zambian Football is at it’s swings in soccer fraternity family. I had liked the sentiments his excellence second-hand him as he was describing Teddy Mulonga” He always lift Zambia higher than it was under very difficult conditions”. Arguably FAZ Executive led by Kalusha is the most highly supported office in Zambian Football History, the President through the corporate world has done all they could to help FAZ and the entire National Team in order for Soccer pundits and Fans feel the lost glory enjoyed in the 70′s, 80′s and early 90′s but indeed Zambia is going through a tough patch that we cannot even describe and find a solution to this Consequence. I believe in the world of sport: Love, Unit and institute if practiced accordingly can revive and make the Football Family content in all aspects of society. Teddy Mulonga has been given a task from his excellence to address the falling principles of Soccer in this country particularly Football, knowing the man and that he served in different sports discipline he is got the ace to work tirelessly for his mother country and try by all means to bring back the lost glory we are all crying for.
    All the best Teddy Mulonga.

” People let’s promote progress above primitivity.” awe sure Uncle Bobs mwa landa. Faz has the noticeable challenge of education hahahaha!!!! no mwasenkesha mudala. Its true that the curent crop right at the top are not a very schoolde bunch but when it is said like this it draws a giggle or two.

My concern though is that the bad blood between Kalu and Mulonga has not been addressed or managed. RB and his advisors on this appointment should have considered how to deal with this before making the appointment. Kalu is a hard head and Mulonga is a leader with sound principles on administration and transparency. already faz is run under the carpet and nobody really knows whats going on and Mulonga will obviously not fit into this crap style of management so already before the doors even open, you can already see conflict.

  10. chiti chitundu on Fri, 27th Nov 2009 11:37 AM

well lets wait and see what happens. this is similar to the appointment of hanif adams as NSCZ chairman to kind of punish FAZ . well i think mulonga will not tolerate UK fiascos and all that type of confusion. i wish him all the best and coming from top managment positions he will help not only soccer but sport as a whole. you know we need pure administrators and not former footballers to do managment work unless they are qualified to do it. you know in europe people go to school for such things not just becasue you were a top goalkeeper then you can be a top player manager or be chairman at a club. its not automatic. lets wait and see.

This move by RB is indeed a tricky one. We hope that the two big men will represent their positions for a good cuase as we all want to see our football move foward especially during this period. I hope they dont turn our game into a battle field.

We shall wait with a watchfull eye….

  12. Seen from afar on Fri, 27th Nov 2009 12:59 PM

Well it was rocky relations from the start with the former minister, so i can’t see it getting any worse. Hopefully he will be an all round great Sports Minister, i suspect he will know better when to give FAZ a wake-up call and when to leave them to it. Fifa rules or not, we’re all in this together at the end of the day.

An interesting turn of events…let us wait and see before we sing praises…The kalu spark with mulonga should be resolved, kalu thought he had done away with mulonga but he forgot the Bemba saying ati ifitafikumana fiwaa

  15. Amuna Onzuna on Fri, 27th Nov 2009 2:51 PM

When Mulonga was at Football House,we hear that he ran the organisation with Iron Fist, and that created a problem between him and his Vice (Kalu).I think, the problem with the two is that one of them is too conservative while the other is liberal.Mulonga is a great Administrator yes,but if one thinks they are too educated to be advised, then you have a problem.Kalu might not be educated but the factor in him is Teamwork,so lets not adjudge the too coz they both have weaknesses.I have known great Men in the World who havent gone far in education but are very successfull right now,so,education or working for BOZ is not a passport to being a good Boss.We have people like Bill Gates who are University drop-outs but look at what they have done to the World, and we have people like Chiluba who claim to be educated but look at who they made us to sleep while he was sturffing all the Dollars in his pockets. So,we can always pray for the best,Political appointments do not work for the people most of the times.

  16. Vincent Numbwa on Fri, 27th Nov 2009 3:43 PM

Apples and Oranges!!!! let wait and hope for the better just may be things can work. Congrates Mr Mulonga it’s long since I saw t that fomous ‘ I love jesus ‘ tie on u!

  17. Ba Zambia on Fri, 27th Nov 2009 3:54 PM

Well done RB. Mulonga is a man who has supported sports development for a long time. He attended most of the events in communities.

  18. Steven on Fri, 27th Nov 2009 4:10 PM

As always, complete idiocy in Zambia. Is he the Permanent Secretary for ‘Football’ or for all Sports?

  19. Bolla Pansi on Fri, 27th Nov 2009 5:11 PM

The bloggers are at it again.
Why bring politics into the game.We all know PSs should not be politicians. Its not a smart move.
What did Mulonga do for futball?
What is the measuring stick used to say he is a gud administrator?
Dont allow politicians appointed by unpopular politicians with no vision to move us forward.
Mulonga is an opportunist who will bring confusion to futball house.Mark my words.

  20. sting on Fri, 27th Nov 2009 6:22 PM

According to zambianfootball.net ,I concluded that RB is not happy with FAZ no wonder He has
appointed Mulanga sa the PS in oder to chase Kalu, N way mark this “do not eat what u have vomited”underline the vomit ,He was the FAZ P while Kalu was the vice why should he be appointed?with full stop.

  21. Tm jics on Fri, 27th Nov 2009 8:20 PM

The reason why football in zambia is going down is because of politics. So even if kalu resigned today and someone took over the presidency, things will always be the same. So the appointment of mulonga won’t change anything. The only solution if this football is to improve; start giving player good reception and money. ANGOLA HERE WE COME!

  22. Muta on Sat, 28th Nov 2009 5:15 AM

Chile were about to the kicked out of the world cup next year when one of its affiliate clubs (Rangers) sued the Chilean Football Association to the Chilean justice courts. FIFA gave the Chilean Football Association 72 hours to persuade the club (Rangers) to drop the case. Chile will now keep its world cup place after Rangers managed to withdraw the case within the 72 hours.

FIFA does not approve civil or government intervention in football.

FAZ is an affiliate member of FIFA and therefore it is governed only according to laws of the world soccer governing body.

RB and his advisers have got all wrong, if they think the appointment of Mulonga will put pressure on Kalu and his executive. This sounds like a very premature move from the government.

The only people who can put pressure on Kalu is the people who put him in office. What Mulonga can do is offer help and guidance to Kalu, which i don’t think is going to happen.

  23. Modsimms on Sat, 28th Nov 2009 6:53 AM

Education shapes an individual.Mulonga has it and will use psychology to work well.Kalu has not employd mulonga and mulonga should work well to win support from both fans and govt .

Introduce youth teams at clubs, network with people to start teams and donate balls and others, work with m.Ps and others to advance sport. We have boys and girls going to the bottle becoz of luck of places to make them busy.

Mulonga will do it and you will see why the president made the choice.Where faz seem lazy, there are scared !

  24. Situ on Sat, 28th Nov 2009 7:15 AM

What about the infamous -bobo- saga, wasnt teddy at the heart of that? the man is an opportunist just like kalu. I dont see anything exceptional about him.

I have always thought that let the minister be geeting the updates from the PS. Ideally the PS and FAZ work in liason to promote the particular sport of football! Its was somehow illogical that in the previous admin at the ministry, PS Minister and Deputy were all on FAZ! Remenber Susan’s outburst on Zambia loss to Egypt at Konkola! Somehow RB saw it fit to clean this ministry but he could have not left out Chipungu!

Mulonga seem to have decent background but as earlier said, he serve the ministry in various sports disciplines and there he should rise above innuendos or kangaroo courts that might be perpetuated by FAZ hopefuls! Surprisingly, some even resigned after failing to ran FAZ and are now professional critics! For Kalu, you not the messiah, therefore work with people and low yourself to consult widely esp with Teddy’s experience now! Sell your strategic plans to your sponsors (GRZ) and enhance corporate governance at FAZ for prudence! Somehow I feel Kalu is a good “connection” but probably his surbodinates could have been moved in those positions all because of Kalu campaign! It’s a lesson next time that let the councillors/footbal admin voting at the AGM base on personality not grouping! Let all sphere of football management be presented: where is marketing esp the jersey replicas? Then how does FAZ raise income apart from gate taking? Football is now modern and requires seeing beyong the noise!

Positive development…..I wish Mulonga was appointed minister of sport. As permenent secretary, he will only be writing and reading sports reports. Thus so….Toothless… positions can not be used to settle scores. God does not give them with such intent… congrats Mulonga….stay on Kalu..do not be shaken
