The Barclays Cup enters the semi finals stage with Ndola’s Trade Fair grounds hosting the double header on Sunday and the Choma Eagles versus Power Dynamos will be the first one in a lunch time kickoff while Green Buffaloes’ Roan United clash who booked the fourth semi-final spot by a narrow victory over Zanaco on Thursady will kickoff at 15 00 hours.

Power Dynamos eliminated holders Zesco United at the same venue a fortnight ago thanks to a Simon Bwalya late strike and are the bookmakers’ favourites to reach the final but against the Keagan Mumba coached side, the Kitwe giants will need its key quintet of Bwalya, Kennedy Mudenda, Joseph Sitali and returning striker Luka Lungu to rise to the occasion and deliver on Sunday.

For Choma Eagles, they ejected crowd puller Nkana via spot kicks to deny the Copperbelt faithful a cracking game and arguably the one of the biggest derbies in Southern Africa to take place. Imagine Nkana versus Power in Ndola.

With reports that the boys from Choma want to offload Kebby Hachipuka because of poor form it will be interesting to see if last year’s ‘wonder boy’ will be in the starting line up alongside striker Aubrey Zulu.

In the second match, Roan United will be looking to build on their victory over Zanaco and cause another upset. Ben Mwanza and one time capped Kelvin Kabwe will lead the attack against the Dennis Banda marshaled backline. Sebastian Mwansa also returns while Nathan Sinkala has to pass a late fitness test.

Buffaloes coach Alfred Lupiya also has the likes of Lineker Mwikisa, Reuben Tembo, Brian Chilando and the diminutive Edward Museba to choose from upfront.

Reuben Tembo a one Chan squad starter will lead the attack for Buffaloes. He also attended trials in Norway last week but unfortunatetly he has sparkled this season

While the Premier League games have been rescheduled due to the Barclays Cup, the second tier games are on.

Nkana who have surrendered the leadership of the division one north to arch rivals Nchanga Rangers and is now four points behind the Gabbittas based side host Gabriel Kaunda’s Afrisports at Nkana Stadium on Saturday.

On Sunday, leaders with 57 points Nchanga are also at home to Kalulushi Modern Stars coached by Kenneth ‘Bubble’ Malitoli while ‘Mighty’ Mufulira Wanderers will also welcome Chindwin.

In the south, leaders Nkwazi and National Assembly are on course for promotion.

In Lubumbashi, Given ‘Freedom’ Singuluma will hope to help TP Mazembe overturn the 2-1 deficient suffered in Nigeria last week as they host Heartland in the second and final leg of the CAF Champions League.

On the side it will be interesting to observe if new Chipolopolo Boys call up Signs Chibambo will be in the final 18 for Heartland. If the earlier encounter in Oweri, the former Nakambala forward failed to make the bench and has been used sparingly this season.

    Ghana striker Dominic Adiyiah is set to join AC Milan in the January transfer window, according to the Italian club’s vice-president Adriano Galliani.The 20-year-old helped his country to triumph at the recent Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, finishing as top scorer.
    He plays for Fredrikstad in Norway but is now set to join the likes of Ronaldinho and Beckham at the San Siro. “I can say that we have signed the young Ghanaian Dominic Adiyiah,” Galliani told the AC Milan TV channel. “We have an agreement with Fredrikstad FK.
    “Now the player needs the work permit to enter Italy and we will deposit the contract on 1 January. “He will have to pass a medical and then he will be a Milan player.”
    Adiyiah fired home eight goals in seven games and was given the Golden Ball award for the best player at the Under-20 World Cup. “He is a forward that can play in place of (Alexandre) Pato and Ronaldinho,” added Galliani.

    Just read the article from the Post, and I must agree with ba Whisper, Kalu is totally off-side. The author really points out some glaring mishaps at Football House that clearly can not be construed as biased. Kalu should just do the honorable thing and resign. His example of Zimbabwe being able to host a tournament when they don’t have more money than FAZ, begs the question, how come FAZ has not offered to host the tournament? He talks about Brazilian and Dutch players not being paid enough (much), but can he honestly compare what those associations pay their players to what FAZ pays our players (even on a scale based on club salaries)? How could he honestly talk about players from the past and have not been rewarded as reason for not rewarding current players? Shouldn’t the FAZ president be working out a plan to compensate the players while assisting those from the past who got nothing? Just what is his understanding of the role of the association in the nation? Should everything be handed down by government?

    Good article, thanks Whisper.

    Allot of the problems we have are no secret, most are the same as many other countries experience but in different variations.

    I agree that our vision to negotiate our limitations, our road map, our “Strategy” is not there or defined. However, i do feel our willingness to overcome is stronger than ever now. Kalusha has an understanding of what needs to be done in this day and age. Whether or not he is as focussed as we would hope, i don’t know.

    With this particular article, i can see where Kalusha is coming from, a man that has been a player once and now an administrator – a leader. The man he is today would tell the man he was yesterday to not think about your pay and bonus. But i also think, when he retires he would still be saying the same thing. We need to bring the faith back, play for the pride of your country and play for yourself. That’s all we can do and even if the reward never comes you will have gained peace of mind and honour.

    Players in past played to be great players! Players today balance aspirations of being great players with aspirations of wealth. It’s not there fault, but when you see Chelsea and when you look at modern cultures it’s understandable. Correct me if i’m wrong, but in this day and age that’s the way it is and i also feel it’s a dangerous mentality for our players to fall into.

    So when that day comes and we are playing Ivory Coast’s full European based squad, who have learn’t not to squander the ball under any circumstance. When we have come straight out of the ZPL we can know we didn’t spend all those hours in training counting our extra pay but actually have been working just as hard if not harder and can do everything they can. The only difference will be that they get paid 400 times as much.

    However, like the point the writer of the Post article makes, our players need to be protected to do so. FAZ needs to have clear improving standards and policies in terms of wages, accommodation, travel, warm-up matches, pitches, stadia… Standards and policies that are satisfactory and that can be upheld and expected.

    Kalu is not a god, he is human and does make mistakes as we’ve seen. He can still make it good.

    ZAMFOOT: Can you please take pictures of the FAZ camp house both in out side if you can so that we can see that the conditions the players have been exposed to during preparation matches before crucial WC/AFCON games. I just read in the post news paper that the camp house FAZ has is nothing but a den of mosquitoes and ghetto looking place which is not fit for human habitation. ZAMFOOT we rely on you. Please bring to pictures of the of FAZ camp house to this blog so we see for ourselves. Previously FAZ used to camp players at Hotels like Holiday Inn, Chrismar Hotel or Ndeke of Garden hotels.

    I think soccer players in Zambia need a wake up call and realize that they cannot get wealthy by playing for the national team. Niether can playing for the national team be their main source of income to support themselves and their families. Playing for the national team should be a matter of pride, name recorgnition and above all passion for lifting the nationl flag higher than any nation and any compensation from such should be considered peripheral or immaterial.

    Frankly speaking, if Zambian players want to be wealthy and make a decent living through playing football they must aim for playing Club football for one of the top teams in Europe. Club football is where you make the big bucks! Here is my premise, a player playing for a good European club and is well paid would care less about the renumeration from a national assignment because that is not their main source of income. Such a player would play for the national team simply because they want to represent their national flag and because of the pride and satisfaction it brings to them. Case in point David Beckham and his passion to play for England. The man went as far as bankrolling his loan move to AC Milan just so that he can have a chance to play top European football and stand a chance to be selected for the England squad. He is not aiming to play for England because of the allowance he will get while on national duty and I don’t think he would even complain about not getting it. He is playing simply becuase he wants to play for his country and because of the satisfaction that would bring to his illustirous career. He makes his money playing for his club the LA Galaxy.

    Problem we have in Zambia and testament to why we have these allowance issues many times over is that players expect to make a living off of playing for the national team. They want to live off of that income and support their wags! That is what has killed the pride the goes along wearing the national jersey. It has come down to their performance based on how much the country pays them. In the absence of a fat pay check, they are demotivated. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure you can give the current Zambian players enough money for them to be motivated and win something if they could not be motivated by the mere fact that the would cup would be played on African soil for the first time, a two hour flight their family and friends could take to go watch them if they qualified.

    In short, my advice to the players would be play for a top European club and make a lot of money while play for the national team for pride sometimes even play pro bono. If you get paid while playing for the national team, take it as a token of appreciation and never miscontstrue that to be your main source of income because it can never match up to what a top club in Europe can pay you. You wonder why there is a lot of West African players in Europe, that is what they dream for the first time they kick that plastic ball. Likewise, your aim should be to join a top European club and be filthy rich! Meanwhile, play for the national team to get name recorgnition and win trophies thereby providing yourself a platform for scouts at these big clubs to sign you to one of their clubs.

    Kalu is not a god, he is
    human and does make
    mistakes as we’ve seen. He
    can still make it good. i beg to disagree with this statement coz this is not the first plunder by kalu and it seems these things are becaming a habit i straggle to find one positive from kalus tenure. it is even unfair to force pipo to work for close to nothing atleast tell them they are playing for free b4 the game so they have a choice to come or not. even kalu him self cant tell me he is working for close to nothing coz charity begins at home.

    @BuzzEd
    well said, my sentiments exactly!

  19. Seen from afar on Sun, 8th Nov 2009 6:33 PM

    @BuzzEd

    Beckham has all the money he needs, even if he moves for free, he still gets paid through advertising… Kalu must also get paid through various means so he must be careful how he argues this case, players like the Cosafa squad should have their “security” at least when they have spent some 3 weeks in camp…

    @mr chicboy

    The last few months have been disappointing no doubt. The first Algeria game was heart breaking because we played hard, second ok but no result again, Egypt at home was a travesty. It all leaves us in a tight spot and feeling dejected once again. FAZ’s organisation around this has been up and down, some major blunders and some acceptable attempts. There have been signs that FAZ can step up when expected, but i accept we still can’t trust and fully rely on FAZ!!! That’s what we need to see change…
