October 10, 2009
Zambia this afternoon takes on Egypt at Konkola Stadium with kickoff at 14:00 hours in a joint FIFA 2010 World/African Qualifiers.
Herve Renard has named his final 18 member and there’s no room for Jacob Mulenga who has been ruled out due to a groin injury.
Francis ‘Mr Reliable’ Kasonde scorer of the equaliser in the 1-1 draw in Cairo hasn’t even made the bench. Fwayo Tembo and Henry Banda will also be watching from the stands.
Isaac Chansa starts on the bench and CHAN 2009 top scorer Given Singuluma has to do with a place on the bench again. Teenage whizkid Emmanuel Mayuka is back in the final 18 after failing to make it in the previous encounter.
William ‘The Magician’ Njobvu and Jonas Sakuwaha are also on the bench and one the duo could be used as makeshift full back. Kampamba ‘Modibo’ Chintu is the only recognised defender on the bench.
Starting XI
_____________ K.Mweene______________
J. Musonda____H. Himonde____ D.Banda___ E.Mbola
________________S.Sunzu__________
_____A. Sinkala______________ N. Chivuta___
_______________R. Kalaba________
C. Katongo_____________________C. Mbesuma
Subs: Kalililo Kakonje, Kampamba Chintu, William Njobvu, Emmanuel Mayuka, Given Singuluma, Isaac Chansa, Sakuwaha
Analysis on the starting line up: From the training sessions, Noah Chivuta will concentrate on the left side of midfield not necessary as a left winger but he will be close and similar to the role Moulada operates at Chelsea.
This a diamond midfield and Rainford Kalaba’s role will be vital. In offensive, the 23 year old will be supporting Katongo and Mbesuma but when the Chipolopolo Boys will be defending Kalaba is expected to occupy the right flank in front of Joseph Musonda while Katongo will balance on the left and Chivuta drifts in inside to make three in the middle of the pack.
When in Egypt is in possesion
________________________Back Four______________
___________Sinkala______Sunzu_____Chivuta____
Kalaba_________________________________________Chris
_______________________Mbesuma____________
Key Men:
Rainford Kalaba: The Unaio de Uleiria has to take responsibility more especially Felix Katongo is missing.
Collins Mbesuma: He has been scoring goals for fun in training but ‘Zambia’s most efficient player in the box’ has to transfer his goal scoring spree and deliver that long awaited ‘Mbezzuma goal’ this afternoon.
Opposition Watch:
Man to watch: Mohammad Aboutrika:
Coach Shehata usuallys deploys the ‘Smiling Assasin’ in the hole just behind the lone striker Amir Zaki. He is Egypt’s main man and no wonder he is the leading scorer with 5 goals in the qualifiers. With Aboutrika in the hole, the Pharoahs is going for a five man midfield. Hosny and skipper Ahmed Hassan- the oldest and most experienced player on the pitch- will be in the engine room.
The team which comes out tops in the midfield will collect maximum points.
Key Battle: Sinkala v Aboutrika
From the formation Stoppilla Sunzu will be given the mantle of man making the ‘Smiling Assasin’ but if the 20 year old emerging midfielder fails to handle the BBC African Footballer of the Year, then Andrew Sinkala and Sunzu will swap roles. It will be an intriguing battle between the duo.
Aboutrika is given the free role and generally plays like a striker. He keeps on drifting from right to left, in the middle and Sinkala’s experience playing as a centre half occassionally will help.
Prediction: Zambia 2 Egypt 1

I think line up is ok. What do people want? You cried for Sinks and he is in. My only worry is one defender of the bench. No predictions.
Chamz on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 12:09 PM
From line and subs, its attack, attack for zambia, we must not allow them to score first.

All the best to the boys.
Uncle Bobs on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 12:45 PM
I think the line-up is ok and team work will serve us good as we don’t really have any exceptional player on our side to match Aboutrika,Zaki or Ahmed Hassan clas. Please don’t misquote me as I actually take the lack of exceptional players on our side a plus for me as this is what has got us to a stage where we outplay greater nations albeit not impressive results. After this experience in the current qualifiers, I have hope that we will come up with a wortwhile team.

How many more Min before kick off??
Seen from afar on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 1:36 PM
Sounds a bit… Chivuta can drop into the back line! So can Chansa and Kampamba i presume. Why would you play Saku or William in defense?
Justice Kafusha on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 1:46 PM
My problem is the formation 4-3-3 is a very attacking minded system mastered by the likes of Brazil, Barcelona to name but a few. You need players with a very high understanding of tactics and a very high level of skill for this system.
I do not mind about the names of those playing but the formation has got me worried. Shoul Egypt take over the midfield, which can happen they will then hit us on the counter attacks. I hope we are not going to see HR panicking and making subs in the first 45 minutes.
Hoping for the best even though I am worried. Remember this is just my thought. It is HR who has been with the team, he may just know better

Doing well, but we lost purpose towards the end of the half. Egypt are happy to play it out and see what they can pick up.
Seasoned Soccer fan-USA on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 2:52 PM
We need more control upfront we missed 4 clear goals. Kalaba, Katongo,Sinkala should have scored. Mbola simply amazing. My man of the match so is Mbola. Watch his counter attacks and free kicks and superb crosses on the left frank. Mbesuma should pave for Given or Fwayo.
Nitram on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 2:52 PM
Hop we cn build on our 1st haf dominance & get a goal. Egypt look dangerous on th counter

Lets go Zed lets go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gametime12 on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 2:59 PM
Ok Zamfoot my take on this is that I see a big change from all the games We’ve played. We did not even play this good against Rwanda. We are playing against a 6 time champion team, but they are “no where”. I did not like the idea of including Sinkala in the team but now, I see why He’d have been instrumental in the beginning. I’m not saying his brilliant I’m just saying his adding something to the team that We have not seen in a while (confidence). I mean what was that back flick pass supposed to mean. Noah Chivuta is my man of the match so far, I can understand where he is coming from; Sinkala has added that stability in the midfield. Tsunami is running aimlessly (his white lips suggest that he has had a smoke or 2). Mbesuma has the whole Egyptian backline shaking, His not even at his best (makes me wonder). My only question is why now? We could have already booked a ticket to South Africa if We played like this from the beginning (but then again the Egyptians know our weakness so the 2n half will be a whole different ball game)
Awe on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 3:00 PM
I just hope we don’t regret those misses. Keep pushing and lets see some goals for Zambia in the second half napapata
One who knows on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 3:01 PM
Zambia must score and take infront before they will be hurt from behind
Steven on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 3:01 PM
Chivuta has played much better than I expected. Mbola is great as usual. Sinkala and Mbesuma are not doing that great to be honest. Options on the bench? Saku or Given.
Seen from afar on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 3:01 PM
I think Chris needs concentrate on the centre and not go chasing balls, hopefully Mayuka can bring some pace upfront.
Gametime12 on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 3:03 PM
And of course HR has done his homework, the boys are playing a disciplined game.
Gametime12 on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 3:05 PM
Sinkala has provided that stability sir and Mbesuma is looking sharp (but He is not fit), We could have used him in the second half.
One who knows on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 3:11 PM
Collins is out of the game. Given failed to score already. Lets give Mayuka a chance.

I for one will not be too interested in COSAFA, lets put pressure on the guys regarding a tournament we only care about, ba Angola are sending U-20 for crying out loud. COSAFA should just be a chance to see if we solve our goal scoring problems. Right now I don’t see that happening…why do people cry for Mbesuma and talk about him being the best. Mbesuma is a very dependent striker right now; without the right service you may aswell have an Egnlish student in his position. I don’t know why I’m upset, I really should not have hyped myself up for this…attah.
Gametime12 on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 4:08 PM

So now we are saying its HRs fault. What do you want him to do, did he not give everyone what they asked for? Mbesuma was there, Sinkala was there…now what? HR is not to blame kwena, bola twachiteya (we played!!!) there was no killer instinct in front of goal. Our best strikers are definately not in form. We don’t have anyone upfront scoring regularly and yet we expect to walk on the field and do wonders. If I was the coach I would let the players know that is their team as much as it is mine, and I will take the blame, but they also need to find a way to fix it. Keep HR until the whole thing is over, then we can look back and assess. IF FAZ DROP HR NINSHI NABO THEY NEED TO GO FULLSTOP!!!

I disagree with all you guys completely.
Look at the contrast of the two halfs, second half was the worst Zambia has played since Cameroun. We gave this game to Egypt on a platter. We tried to stretch the game and played into Egypts hands.
I supported HR, but now am afraid, i didn’t see much more from him and this tactical decision defies believe. How do you play our weakness and also into their strength i don’t know. We need to build, but not with HR am afraid. He still doesn’t understand our phsyche.

@Uncle Bobs
U obviously didn’t watch the game. Sinkala did an excellent job in the midfield, so did Sunzu actually. Even HH performed well. The only player you can honestly criticise is Mbesuma and maybe Kalaba for failing to put away a couple of chances even though he did have a good game. I would keep Sinkala for Algeria, and your lineup has no defensive midfielders whatsoever you honestly don’t expect william to fight for the ball in midfield. HR had a good starting lineup, Mbesuma (God bless him) just didn’t have the pace to handle the Egyptian defense.

If Algeria does not help you tomorrow, you are out of the AFCON.
Awe on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 4:27 PM
sorry I meant keep Sinkala for Rwanda…those Algerians they even get into my thoughts..atta
SHOOTTER on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 4:30 PM
If Algeria beat Rwanda atleast by two goals then Zambia will be in Angola, coz even with our local side Rwanda can never beat Zambia by 4-0.

Patrick Phiri is a good coach and we should have extended his contract. It’s sad that we support and protect HR despite his poor results.
Gametime12 on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 4:33 PM
Its clear that the Egyptians knew our weakness (We cannot score a single goal). Sinkala definitely added something more than his skills, the boys were willing to fight till the final whistle. Without Sinkala they’d have done the same, but for them to see a veteran fight it out kept them alive. The thing is HH and them were not under any sort of pressure at all, because the Egyptians were holding their fire till they scored. We got naked right from the start so why not get to the point.
BK on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 4:35 PM
Its huge mountain to go people has done there best money and surport vehicles were bought for them but look at the results what is happening cause if u want to enjoy and celeblate football then it should be chelse, asernal when are we going to celeblate Zambian football
Gametime12 on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 4:38 PM
Mbesuma showed that he is a natural striker, BUT He needs to be in shape. The only way He could have scored is if you would have done all the work for him only to pass the ball for him to Finnish.
nsomba on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 4:44 PM
You know guys we cannot keep saying they have better quality players or we are not good enough yes we have got zero points from a possible 9 pts .My point is I have seen average teams beat star studed teams when they are at home .This HR guy thinks he will work with a team like cameroon when he can barely manage to beat Rwanda togo and swaziland at home and loose every other match .Personnally I feel the person who is not good enough is HR.Before he came to Zambia what was his track record nothing write home about and this is the same chap who writes us off before a kick of the ball during my 20 plus yrs of following football I have never heard of a manager writing his team off before the even kick a ball thats psychological suicide .As far am concerned football is about results and this guy is not getting the desired results so he should be fired it as simple as that if it was a Zambian we would have fired him a long time ago and am sick and tired of this same excuse that “we are building a team” for how long are we going to be building nga ni nyumba ninshi izaka sila liti ? So for me HR kuyabebele teyeseko another expertriate .
Sibs on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 4:46 PM
Like said you can’t go anywhere when you lose home games. Why allow someone to come and boss you in your own backgroud. Even Malawi is stronger than us.The haven’t lost a game at home. The are the only team Ivory Coast has failed to beat so far. I chekced out the Ivorians humiliate the physical Burkina Faso 5-0. F

turns out tomorrow Algeria will be helping you anyways
Justice Kafusha on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 5:51 PM
@Uncle Bobs
Bobs man you, me, and many more dedicated fans should look forward. We have to fight on. While I agree with your points I am still convinced these younger players like Clifford, Mayuka, William and so on need people like Sinks just to teach them one or 2 things before they are left alone. I am too of the view that we need to make changes and start fusing in the young players.
I feel that in our last game Vs Rwanda HR should give chance to Mayuka, Njovu, Edwin Phiri, Felix Sunzu, Clifford Mulenga and any other promising players (Fwayo and S. Sunzu need to find clubs). Players like Singuluma, Chris, Jacob, Felix and Mbesuma should be given a rest. As regards older players I feel Saku, Isaac (who was surprisingly put on the bench), Sinks; Chivuta should be maintained for the purpose of giving guidance to our young guns
One other issue is whether HR is the right coach for Zambia. I really doubt this, because although he is a big mouth to journalists he is not a big mouth to Kalu and FAZ. His formation in today’s game was crap. Long balls is not our cup of tea
In conclusion it is better for us not to be in Angola but instead sort out the mess, than qualify and get humiliated
Bobs just been playing that song “ba Zambia balila ba Mwine, Twafulaka ba bomber eh and so on.
I am just watching Russia and Germany. It is 0-1 to Germany, tough game
Cheers

BA ZAMBIA on Sat, 10th Oct 2009 6:01 PM
Okay the game is done we have lost. we played well but yet again we could not score. what i talked about in my last article happened today again. when we were a goal down the fans were quiet. i just hope jojo and ngwa ngwazi are on the copperbelt because thats were i am now in my national regalia. ask me now Jojo about the inside of the stadium.the fans went quiet when we needed them the most. infact i dare you to call me 0979495670 so we can link up.
overall Renard has shown a system. in the past 18 months i think its the best home game we have played but Egypt have shown their why they are the champions of Africa. i hope Jojo had an opportunity to be in the conference centre though i doubt it if he even went to the Stadium. Shehata actually agrred he did not exept Zambia to play like that.

It’s like i don’t exist on this blog…
Can someone explain the tactics employed in the second half? Does everyone see nothing wrong with them? Ba Zambia, is the general feeling really that we played well?
The first half was amazing with Egypt not recording more than 2 shots on target, Egypt were deep deep trouble. Then the second was the worst ever, Egypt can’t believe their luck!!! How is that allowed to happen?
Ba Zambia, best home game was Togo, with Zambia dominating from start to Finish. This game is worst than Algeria, at least we played to the finish. I’ve never seen a Zambian side not fight to the end. Today i did.

Some Arab Sheikh bought the match from Kalusha and his cronies….this is entirely conceivable…i will not put anything past this in our Africa. I m just going on break now…will start following zambian football again only after some serious changes..good player selection. If this match was bought..the thinking is that zambia is going to beat Rwanda in Kigali…i will not even follow the match. Hate to say…Zambia SUCKs nowadays.

Gametime what do you have against HH? I mean b4 the game you criticised the guy and he perofrmed very well and was confident enough to go for the ball when they take free kicks. Now you feel they were not under pressure.
The Government on Sun, 11th Oct 2009 3:00 PM
@ Gametime
I thought you understand football but I am beginning to doubt your understanding of the game.
You telling me that we should blem the players when they are simply instructed on what position to play and what to do by they coach who happens to be HR.
Even Sir Alex makes mistakes, he made mistakes in the UEFA chanpions league final against Barcelona. But the difference between club and national team football is that National team football you can’t afford to loose two games and expect to win anything while you can win the league even after loosing 4 games.
HR has made too many mistakes as national team coach and this has cost us a lot. Patrick Phiri only made one mistake at the last AFCON and he was shown the door and HR should be given a second chance?
Do you blem the players for loosing 5-1 in the last AFCON?
If HR was a good coach we would have already qualified for the world cup despite not qualifying for the world cup. And don’t tell me that you expect something special from this HR guy.
Chamz on Mon, 12th Oct 2009 9:59 AM
Lets face it, Zambia is not good enough. Why do I say this? First of all let us not compare apples with oranges. In the last Afcon games leading to Ghana and the past years where we faced teams like Senegal and Togo, I must those where weak groups compared to having Algeria and Egypt. People have you forgotten that a few years ago, Benin qualified at the expense of Zambia.
I think we were being unrealistic by thinking that Zambia would qualify over Egypt and Algeria. I think the 1-1 in Cairo was due to the fact that Egypt was on a slump and not because Zambia was that good. My second point is that we lack good players, full stop. Teams like Egypt and Algeria have players who can score even they are not playing well. We don’t have a Kalu in this team, a Drogba, a Messi, a Etoo, we just have 11 clueless guys on the field who miss sure goals and go flat when they concede. Maybe we should be patient this time and build a team for the future, honestly, Algeria and Egypt has better players. The best team Zambia had was 1996 in SA Afcon, we have never had a better team since then.
The Patrick Phiri factor? I don’t think PP is better than HR, in fact he was coach, we would playing 4-2-4 and losing by 4-0 margins. The fact that we are not losing by big margins show that HR is not a bad coach but the problem lies with scoring and winning. I think Zambia is like Arsenal, all the nice football but they lose.
Blaming HR: I blame HR for sticking with the same crop of players even after they played badly in recent games. Why not feature players from Zesco and Red Arrows who scored many goals in the African Competitions. HR’s talk of Enoch Sakala not being world class was crap. What has Chris, Jacob and others done in the last games? Nothing.
Should we fire the coach? No. Firing the coach means going back to square one. Sorry, I would have a foreign coach like HR and not Kaumba or Phiri, who will not be told which players to feature. I think HR was brought professionalism in terms of discipline. In the past players like Tana would walk in and out of the team anytime.
Algeria and Egypt. Egypt, their team has been together for six years, with the same coach. Lesson for Zambia, patience. Algeria is full of French born players, so we are just being hard on ourselves. The other thing is that Zambia has always struggled with Arab teams, even in the past.
Way forward. If we fail to qualify for Afcon, I would expect HR to resign on moral grounds.
If we do qualify, depending on how we play in Angola, at least reach quarters then, I would let him stay. France did badly at last Euros but they still kept their coach, even now they are struggling a bit. Portugal have Carlos despite not being impressive. We can fire HR today and a new coach will go back to the basics, then it means we would be starting all over again. Lastly in football, you need patient, long term planning and experienced players and a bit of luck.
