Players Abroad: A new season has begun

August 4, 2009

Germany

The competitive season got underway this week in Germany with the first round of the DFB Pokal (German FA Cup).

Newly relegated 2. Bundesliga Arminia Bielefeld were drawn in the first round against 3. Liga side SpVgg Unterhaching, and successfully opened the season in the outskirts of Munich with a 3-0 victory. It was just past the halfhour mark when Bielefeld took the lead, and right on the stroke of half-time, they doubled their advantage through Chris “Tsunami” Katongo.

Bielefeld showed their speed on the counter attack, as they played the ball down the left flank, with 5 attackers lined up for the low cross versus three defenders. Katongo found the end of the pass right in the centre of the 18 yard box, and with all the time in the world stopped the ball, set his feet and buried it past the goalkeeper.

The match finished 3-0.

FC Augsburg defeated FC Ingolstadt, 2-1. Two first half goals were enough for FCA to progress to the next round. Andrew Sinkala played the entire match in his usual defensive role.

The Netherlands

Jacob Mulenga made his Eredivisie debut for FC Utrecht in the starting XI with the number 24 shirt. The games only goal came in the third minute from Ricky Van Wolswinkel to give Utrecht the 1-0 victory.

Mulenga received a stern welcome to Holland in the 6th minute. The opposing goalkeeper gobbled up a high corner kick, he ran out to launch a long-kick. He must have felt the Zambian was running too closely beside him and introduce Jacob to his elbow, dropping the striker to the ground. The incident went unnoticed by the official.

Finland

Suomi-polopolo (RoPS) suffered another crushing defeat in their away match at defending league champions Inter Turku, the final was 4-0.

The starting lineup consisted of Chileshe Chibwe, Christopher Musonda, Zeddy Saileti, White Simwanza, Chanda Mwaba, Stephen Kunda and Godfrey Chibanga in the 4-5-1 formation. In the 77th minute, striker Nchuminya Mweetwa, still getting back to full fitness after a knee injury, replaced Saileti.

AC Oulu hit a stumbling block at home to Jippo, losing the match 1-0, and falling from first to third in a tight race for the championship. Dominic Yobe was in the holding midfield position, and brother Donewell Yobe was at striker. Despite holding the majority of the possession, Oulu failed to put together the needed service into box to break the deadlock.

Jippo made use of their oppurtunity in the second-half to take the lead, and Oulu could never recover, despite a push at the end, following the introduction of Canadian striker Frank Jonke.

Oulu play a mid-week game on the road at second-place KPV Kokkola, who are two points ahead in the standings and tied on points with the leaders.

CAF Champions

Given Singuluma’s TP Mazembe lost 2-1 in Tunisia after giving away a 1-0 lead to Etoile du Sahel. In Nigeria Signs Chibambo’s Heartland thrashed giant killers Monomutapa by 3 goals to 1.

****

Sweden

Isaac Chansa is still out with an injury and missed Helsingborg’s 2-1 away win over Hammarby as his club went top of the league.

Boyd Mwila’s Djungardens lost 2-0 to Gefle and they now rocked third from bottom. Mwila is still nursing an injury.

Defender Edwin Phiri made a place on the bench for second tier side Ljungskille. Phiri has also returned from Injury.

Two weeks ago Herve Renard was in Sweden to watch the boys but unfortunately he found the trio injured.

    @Uncle Bobs
In Zambia, we are too quick to write off people. We must understand that sometimes players go thru a blip. Good to see Katongo wearing his scoring boots again.
As Ba Justo, says, Let Chris stick to Bundesliga 2 and prove hinmself by bring them Arminia back to the top flight.
The other day, people were busy writing off Zesco. Come on, it is just 2 games gone guys. Zesco win three of your remaining 4 games you could as well be in the semis of the Orange Champs League. Dont despair.
    Forward with Zambian football.

spot on ba muzo, we like to write off.

Meanwhile, Zesco returned back home yesterday .Zesco secretary Justin Mumba said upon arrival at the Lusaka International Airport that his club will not release any of its players if called for the Chipolopolo camping ahead of the friendly match against Ghana. Chipolopolo will play Ghana in London on August 12, just three days before Zesco face El Merreikh. Mumba said the match against El Merreikh will be crucial and that the coach needs the services of their players who are in the national team-Jonas Sakuwaha and Nyambe Mulenga. “We are not going to release our players, it’s not possible; ask Renard if he was coach for Zesco, what would he do. We are playing in a serious competition,” he said. Mumba said it was unfortunate that the Ghana friendly match against Chipolopolo at Brisbane Road Stadium coincided with Zesco’s trip.
He said Zesco will leave for Sudan for their crucial encounter against El Merreikh next Wednesday on the same day Chipolopolo take on Ghana.
Mumba said Zesco has since requested the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to postpone their Week 17 match against City of Lusaka. “We will not play our midweek on Wednesday because the team is going straight to Ndola from here (airport) we have requested FAZ to put off that game,” he said. Mumba said his side will fulfill that league match against Kabwe Warriors on Saturday

It is a FIFA date and FAZ can force u to release the players

” Katongo found the end of the pass right in the centre of the 18 yard box, and with all the time in the world stopped the ball, set his feet and buried it past the goalkeeper”.This statement symbolises that our striker was slow and if there was a sharp defender,he was going to be dispossesed. It reminds me of last Friday’s CAF Champions League game between Zesco & Al Hilla.Jonas failed to make a touch in the 18-yard box with the only the goalkeeper to beat, but decided to trap the ball and try to dribble until he was surrounded by defenders who took the ball away.We were 1-0 down, and I dont understand a striker who cant learn to make connection in the box,its really pathetic.I hope these Guys learn from such small..small silly mistakes that cost us games.

Wonder how HR’s tour of monitoring overseas players is going or has gone. Whats the latest on that, were did he go after Finland?

Justice Kafusha :Let him help his club back, sometimes it pays to stick where u are

I agree that sometimes it pays to stick were you are. I also think that this club despite droping have shown a lot of faith in Katongo and continue to do so. Players like Siyabonga Nkosi and Rowen Fernandez were unable to get game time at this very club and I should say Siyabonga Nkosi is a very good player. Chris should stick it out and only make a call at the end of the season. The damage of moving to a strugling club has already been done might as well run the course.

Guys, does anyone have confirmation if Felix has signed for Sundowns? I’ve been trying to get info but it looks like the Brazilians have kept it very tight this tme around, they even train behind closed doors.

Can someone please tell me, is this Zeddy Saileti at ROPS the same one who played at the 1994 African Cup finals in Tunisia and cost us a trophy with his misfirings?

He is the very one, though i dont think its fair to say he cost us the trophy mind you it was two teams playing and on the day they proved better than we were.

  12. m on Tue, 4th Aug 2009 10:44 AM

Yes, it’s the same Zeddy. He is now 40 years old and still playing. This is Zeddy’s 16th year in RoPS. A great legend!

  13. m on Tue, 4th Aug 2009 10:46 AM

    From Wikipedia:

“Zeddy Saileti (born 1969) is a Zambian football striker and a football coach. A good goalscorer, he formed part of the squad that reached the final of the 1994 African Nations Cup. Saileti was born and raised in a family of eleven children. His father was a mine worker and mother a home school teacher. His little brother Derek Saileti is also a football player. Saileti used to play several sports while young – mostly football and tennis. Luanshya mining company paid for the gear.

    Background

Saileti can thank Roger Milla for getting noticed by RoPS chairman Jouko Kiistala in the beginning of 90s. Kiistala had admired Milla’s talent and decided to scout African player for his club with help of his brother and his brothers Zambian friend who were studying in London that time. Zambian friend was then send to scout good Zambian based players for RoPS and Saileti was found. Despite of other offers at the table, Saileti decided to choose exotic Finland.

    Saileti in Lapland

Since 1994, he has played for RoPS, currently in the Veikkausliiga, the top level league in Finland. Saileti has been vital part of the team and is starting his 16th season with the team. He has been team’s best goalscorer in 95, 96, 00, 01, 04, 05, 06 and 08. Saileti has most caps in Veikkausliiga with RoPS. He is in second place of the all-time scorers with 64 premier league goals. While in the Ykkönen, the Finnish second highest tier, with RoPS, he has scored 26 goals in 87 games.

In end of 2007 Saileti signed a new contract with RoPS making him a player-coach for the team.”

Zesco reject Lorients offer over Sakuwaha
    By STEPHEN PHIRI

ZESCO United have rejected a proposed one-year contract offered by French Ligue 1 side FC Lorient for international striker Jonas Sakuwaha.

Zesco secretary Justin Mumba said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that they were interested in securing a good future for Sakuwaha.

Insiders said FC Lorient have offered Sakuwaha 50,000 euros.

“They (FC Lorient) sent us the proposed contract which we are not happy with. We have added one or two things we thought could make the contract attractive. We are still talking,” Mumba said.

Sakuwaha attended trials at FC Lorient from July 7 to July 16.

He expressed hope that FC Lorient will be ‘flexible’ in their dealings.

  22. jayda on Tue, 4th Aug 2009 12:56 PM

i think people must learn to understand the game a bit more than they care to give. football players are not just about scoring goals then they are good. for some one to be worth donning the the mighty white, golden orange, or relaxing green, whichever the FAZ of the day decides should be our national colours, the player must first show a consistent level of form, we just look at the surface and say this guy is scoring then he is good lets call him.. its wrong to do that. we should be able to observe a players performance over a season and say then sit back and say yes thats’ chipolopolo material. he can perform at international level.

only then will we be able to produce the next golden footballing generation as in the heydays of Kalusha bwalya, alex chola, godfrey chitalu,

What exactly are Zesco unhappy about in this deal ? Is it pesronal terms ? the sale price of 50 pin or the contract period. I am concerened about the period of the contract. They should try to extract at least two years out of lorient. One year is not enough time for him to settle and make an impact. Such contracts have not served our players well. Jacob Mulenga at strasbourg, felix at Chatteroux, Stophira Sunzu at the same club, Collins Mbesuma at Sundowns etc. Only Rainfor has made something out of a one year loan spell. But I believe in Sakuwaha. That is the kind of player that Europeans want – big, strong , mandingo like , with a trace of arrogance about his game. Lets not blow this chance of having another player in a European league proper.
