Construction works at Independence Stadium are on schedule and have been boasted by the arrival of a nine member Chinese delegation which comprises engineers and other technical staff.
The Chinese delegation being led by Beijing Institute of Architectural design director Xu You jetted into Lusaka on Saturday and was welcomed by Ministry of Sports officials at Lusaka International Aiport.
“We are the designers of the Ndola Stadium project. We have come to do feasibility studies (Independence). We are working together with ministry of Sports and Ministry of Works and Supply,” Xu has been quoted in the Saturday Post Sport.
The team will carry geo-technical survey to determine suitable designs and also conduct tests of soil at the stadium.
The Chinese who will be in Zambia for a month are also expected to carry similar tests and survey in Livingstone were they are expected to build a brand new stadium which will have a seating capacity of 30, 000.
In Ndola works on a new 40, 000 capacity seater has already started and the Chinese have said it will be complete in 24 months.
Independence Stadium is expected to be complete by March 2010.
Ministry of Sports minister Kenneth Chipungu led a delegation last week for talks over the rehabilitation of the oldest Stadium in Zambia.

Well that makes good reading. It is however sad that the country will not make the most of having the most prestigious world football event in our backyard all because of incompetency of the so-called leadership!!!! We should have had a plan to ensure that we have facilities available that could be used by teams ahead ofthe WC kick-off. By now we should have been marketing these facilities. But no, in Zambia, things don’t work that way. What a shame!!!!!!

Paulsen, you are correct. The whole structure will now be brought down and a new one built. The engineers have to do all the tests before arriving the design and capacity. Metall pa metal. No need to rush, let them do a thorough job. We have waited for 44 years, I am sure we can wait another 26 months to have a world class structure. This is good news certainly. For Livingstone, my view is that the Government should just find a new place than to rehabilitate the Maramba stadium. Any one who has been to Maramba stadium will agree that the environment is terrible to say the least. We can find a better place with ambient sorroundings befitting the tourist capital
