Katongo brothers: Tragedy derailed us

July 2, 2009

katongo-brothers
ZAMBIA soccer team brothers, Felix and Christopher Katongo, have revealed that they were psychologically disturbed during the joint 2010 African Cup and World Cup qualifier against Algeria at Konkola stadium on June 20 as a result of the accident involving Felix’s vehicle two days before the match.

The two brothers have called on their colleagues to put the 0-2 loss against the Desert Foxes behind and focus on winning the remaining qualifiers and qualify to the first World Cup on African soil.

While the squad was fine-tuning for the crunch qualifier against Algeria, Felix’s Mistubish Pajero, while being driven by his friend Benson Banda was involved in a road traffic accident in Chisamba area on June 18 where three people including Banda died.

Both players said in separate interviews yesterday that they where psychologically disturbed by the incident especially with the death of their colleague.

Felix said that he only knew about the accident a day before the game and it was hard to contend the loss of his friend.

“That accident really affected my performance especially with the death of my friend. When the accident happened on Thursday I was not told, I didn’t know about it but Chris knew. I only got wind of it on Friday and I was disturbed. But Chris was more affected than me because he knew everything that happened. Three people died and the driver (Benson) was not just my good friend but he was like family. He was my trusted friend and may his soul rest in peace,” he said.

The older of the two brothers, Chris, who is the team skipper said he was very disturbed with the incident and did not tell his younger brother because he did not want to make him restless.

Chris said it was sad that such a thing happened before the crucial encounter but that it was important to go back to the drawing board and start strategising for the remaining qualifiers.

“We can’t change the past but we can make a bright future. It was unfortunate that such an incident happened but there’s nothing we can do about it. The most important thing now is just to remain focused and do our best in the remaining qualifiers.

Chris had arguably his worst performance in a Zambian jersey and the game marked the first time the skipper was substituted since he inherited the armband. Felix also did not play according to his high standards.

And FAZ general secretary, George Kasengele said the association was deeply saddened by the incident and advised fans to be cautious when driving to watch matches in[Times of Zambia]

They will be ready when we beat Algeria-3-0, away.

  7. Never on Thu, 2nd Jul 2009 2:28 PM

Algerian :Chamz how am I going to get this through your head? There is no way of beating Algeria at home.. Even the mighty egypt failed. Failed hard! we are undefeated at home now for 8 games!

Even if you qualified for the world cup, you do not have a team to make a memorable impact at the tournament.

  8. Chamz on Thu, 2nd Jul 2009 3:33 PM

Is Never and Algerian the same person? The posts above shows so. ha! ha! Stop pretending you are Algerian. Ha! ha!

  9. Big Steve from SA on Thu, 2nd Jul 2009 4:05 PM

Sad they lost someone that was like family but then again considering how crucial the game was they should have advised the coach and he would have assessed their mental preparedness for the game and had he found that they were not in the best mindset for the game he should have benched them. very sad for the guys but this should be a learning curve for all the players. If you have something as hard pressing as that then for the team and country you should advise the coach and consider sitting out a game. no one will point a finger because everybody, even kids these days understand the impact of loss through death.

a la chi Never! You have been caught my friend. Why are you trying to cause mischief here? Ha ha ha, who else have you been impersonating?

Sorry to hear about the tragic events. May their souls rest in peace.

  11. the master on Thu, 2nd Jul 2009 4:10 PM

i think the algerians dont really have any special players like a messi or cristiano ronaldo type …but rather they rely heavily on the coaches instructions…technical aspect .as 4 zambia the team relies heavily on the whole team playing well and when they dont we lose..so the solution is to bring in one player who is consistent and can motivate the boys in every match.someone who while warming upcan make theopposition fear…Zambia needs a star…like when we had kalu..

so Renard needs to allow one to take up that resonsibility….

an alternative would be to provide a consistent team who know their positions and are skillful and disciplined.

u can imagine that upto now i dunno the formation we used against algeria…

Ba Zamfoot, those guys that use curse words etc. don’t care about the site, so a threat like this might just motivate them even further. That would be tragic because for those of us who ‘eat’ this site we can’t be without it. The best way is just for all of us to ignore those that chose to use bad language and disrespect.

Mmmm… those are bumper articles I can’t wait. Btw. sorry that my contribution hasn’t materialised yet (I hope you know what I am referring to), but I hope to get it sorted out soon.

    NEWS
CAF Champions League: An open contest more than ever
    07-02-2009

The thirteenth edition of the Champions League is expected to be different from the previous editions as all favourites have been eliminated before the group stages. Al Ahly who have reached the last four finals are out and only Etoile du Sahel can boast of a good record.
If one were to ask the favourites of the competition after Ahly, the answer will logically be Etoile du Sahel of Sousse. Taking into consideration all competitions on the continental scene, the Tunisian side are ranked next to the Cairo giants, Al Ahly. The Sousse-based outfit won the Champions League in 2007 and also played the finals in 2004 and 2005. It’s two Cup Winners’ Cup titles, three CAF Cup titles and two Super Cups places the club in another level of the African game with no contender.
TP Mazembe of Lubumbashi will be their staunchest rival. The Congolese side dominated African football in the 1960s and played in four consecutive finals of the defunct Champions Cup, now Champions League.
The club has what it takes to win the competition with the bulk of its players having formed the base of the DR Congo side that won the inaugural edition of the CHAN in Cote d’Ivoire. The two sides will clash in Group B.
In Group A, the focus will be on the eternal rivalry between two of Sudan’s top clubs, Al Merreikh and Al Hilal. Their rivalry can only be compared to that between Al Ahly and Zamalek all of Cairo, ASEC and Africa Sports in Abidjan, or Raja and WAC all of Casablanca. The clash between the two Sudanese sides shall be full emotions and firepower. This can be of benefit to the two other clubs in the group, Zesco United of Ndola, Zambia and Kano Pillars of Nigeria. The Zambians recently created sensation on the national team and has joined the league of elite clubs in Africa just as Power Dynamos, Nkana Red Devils, Green Buffaloes, Mufulira Wanderers and Kabwe Warriors which represented the country honourably in continental club competitions.
Nigeria has been trying to find a team to move in the shadow of Enyimba which won the Champions League title in 2003 and 2004. The country can count on two teams, Kano Pillars, that won its first championship and Heartland FC, which came as runners up in the same championship. Heartland formerly Iwuanyanwu National of Owerri, was the dominant Nigerian side on the African scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The last team in the group stages is Monomotapa FC of Zimbabwe. The relatively unknown club eliminated ASEC Mimosas Abidjan on its way tot he group stages and must be taken seriously.
The question is who shall replace Ahly of Cairo as kings of African football? The answer will unfold in the few months ahead. RESULTS
    Al Hilal2 : 0Primeiro de … Monomotapa2 : 0ASEC Abidjan Al Ahly2 : 2Kano Pillars Al Merreikh1 : 1Kampala City … Ittihad …0 : 0TP Mazembe Coton Sport1 : 1Heartland FC

COSAFA should also have a club championship like CECAFA have in order to help boost the the quality of club football in COSAFA region. This yr only ZESCO United made it to the group stages of the champions’league from the COSAFA region.

    BLOENFONTEIN CELTIC INTERESTED IN KASONDE.
In their bid to reinforce their squad after realeasing no less 12 players at the end of the season, Bloenfontein celtic could be roping in zambian international Francis Kasonde if things go their way.
Kasonde could fill the void left by retired malawian midfieder john maduka.Highly rated kasonde is willing to consider celtic without undergoing trials while celtic want to put him on trials..Talks are going on behind the scenes
    Good luck to kasonde.

    @Zamfoot
I think you should hold off on submitting any new stories so the kids can leave this site and find a new playground. I was under the impression that most of the bloggers on this site were mature and respectfull but it seems thats not the norm. Cheap shots and insults speak volumes about who u are and this just demeans this blog and the level of discourse. Gentlemen please stop insulting each other and or accusing others of using “Alias’s”. One thing is for sure, from my experience on this blog the regulars Like Justice, Dinamo,Steve, uncle Bob’s and other longtime regulars would not use an Alias to post anything. They would simply use there names and and let people respond to them and we all would agree or agree to disagree on what they said. But using the acronym “Annonymus”? I doubt that!! So on behalf of every one who cherishes this site & Zamfoot, i am respectfully asking individuals(especially the late comers) to stop from the personal attacks and accusation’s and stick to football/soccer. Even to those non Zambian’s, u are more than welcome to post on this site but in a respectfull manner. Yes you can Brag if you are from Algeria or any other nation for that matter but do it in a tasteful way. I am assuming we are all African at the end of the day and especially next June/July!

Dear Zambian friends, you must know us Algerians are thankful for the hospitality and the fairplay of the Zambians supporters during the Zambia vs Algeria game. we also hold Zambia football team in very high esteem because they play the kind of football we like to see.
we hope to repay you with the same or better on 05/09 in Algiers.

I would like to echo the sentiments of those who are displeased with recent postings that have been full of hate and insults. This is the reason I stopped visiting lusakatimes.com. Like KK11 states, this site has been operating on mutual respect. Zamfoot, you used to delete unpalatable comments, what has happened now?please do something about it. Is there a way of restricting names to the original owners, like email addresses (i.e. if a name exist the system rejects someone else trying to use it?) because anyone can write bullshit and put someone else’s name tainting their image. Zamfoot, please don’t punish the masses because of a few hypocrites trying mess up a good thing.

Just ignore the culprits, banning them and all these other sorts of things will just fuel their desire to be mischievious. Look at how the site is growing in stature, it is good that we are now getting foregin visitors. This could easily become the number one port of call for all things Zambian football. With the coming bumper football year ahead, the sky is the limit for the site. Keep it up Zamfoot, as a Zambian in the diaspora it was hard to keep abreast with Zambian football but your site has helped. As the hosts of the site just avoid getting involved in the nonsense people are trying to stir up. Have a good weekend guys.

  43. Uncle Bobs on Fri, 3rd Jul 2009 10:32 AM

We lost our entire team in 1993 and Great Kalu and others soldiered on. Cameroun lost Marc Vivian Foe and soldiered on and lost by a solitary goal to France courtesy of an Henry “Fluke” goal. There’s no need for the Katongo brothers to justify their below par performance. In as much as i sympathise with their loss, on the other hand they had an option of telling the coach to assess their psychological prepardeness for the match. 3 points are gone and there is no margin of error with 3 games to go (2 tough away matches)and a tough home match. I for one will never hold the Katongo brothers accountable as like i have always stood for, no player is indispensable. With or without the GREAT Katongo brothers the result would not have been any different in my humblest opinion. My condolences all the same Chris and Felix as we still hold you in high esteem but always put National Interest first.

Ba ZAMFOOT no pan, soldier on and no amount of insults should derail you. I,ve been locked up in workshops in SA whole of this week and will read behind to understand the insults insinuated here. Brother Kafusha,Ndobo, Chamz,Algerian (let’s allow divergent views to flow as we would also have done what he and friends are doing had we won, let’s just accept defeat but we will win in Algeria you Algerian brother!)we do not accept any departure that we will take loss of a brother, we still need you. Divergent views in whatever manner should be haboured.

That’s exciting news baZedfoot. When will their destinations be revealed. I hope Willy gets a deal. This will be his third bout of trails in Europe, the first time he was there (Nantes in France if I remember correctly) he owned up to the fact that he wasn’t good enough and the level was very high. Hopefully the guy now knows what he needs to do and will be successful.

    Who is the other player?

Well done Jonas, willy and Seba. This is a positive development. Guys, I was sent some DVD’s of Mayuka and Justine in Isreal. I have to say that football that side is tough, it really resembles rugby. I should say that the boys need to be tough.

Justice Kafusha Do not involve me in this…..This is between you and Ndobo. I believe you have mistaken me for Ndobo, otherwise don’t include me in this on going no sense. I have managed to stay above this bull and post my feelings about Zambian soccer and not personally attack other bloggers. Please leave me out of this.

Its the one he used during his wedding ceremnoy to formalise his marriage at savoy Hotel last December which I attended. Hon. Munaile was the guest of honour.
