Kasonde set to sign for Sudanese giants

June 30th, 2009

Francis Kasonde with an Merriakh official at the airport in Sudan.

Power Dynamos and International defender cum midfielder Francis ‘Mr Reliable’ has been spotted in Sudan where he is believed to be on the verge of signing for Al Merriekh contrary to media reports that he is in Egypt.

And CHAN 2009 Golden Boot winner Given ‘Freedom’ Singuluma arrived in Lubambashi on Monday afternoon and is set to connect to Khartoum, Sudan were TP Mazembe is featuring as guest team in the CECAFA Club Championship.

Kasonde who made his International debut in 2005 as a full back has been a key figure in the Chipolopolo Boys set under the French-born coach Herve Renard. After an impressive performance in the inaugural CHAN tournament in Ivory Coast, the 23 year old was linked with a move to Egyptian giants Zamalek but it now looks like the hard working ‘Mr Reliable’ will sign for the Sudanese glamour side and will act as a ‘spy’ for them in the last 8 of the CAF Champions League fixture against Zesco United later on this next month.

Defence kingpin Elijah Tana spent the 2006/07 season at Merriakh which was an injury plagued campaign was eventually released. Striker Zaccariah Simukonda also had a spell at the same club.

Meanwhile Singuluma might make his debut for TP Mazembe in Sudan should he secure a Visa to travel. The goal poacher is set to fly to Sudan from Lubambashi as soon as his travel arrangements are done.

While many speculated that the 22 year old had signed three deals with TP, Zanaco and Haka of Finland, Zambianfootball.net can reveal that Singuluma did not have a ‘valid contract’ with any of the three clubs.

At Zanaco, Singuluma was featuring as a guest player and the bankers only started to claim about having his economical rights after his exploits at CHAN 2009. For TP Mazembe, ‘Freedom’ had a verbal agreement with the club which was stuck before Zambia faced Egypt in Cairo at the end of March.

As for Haka, everything was agreed between the player and club but confusion came in after Zanaco claimed that he was there player and that surprised Haka (have always thought he was a free agent in which he was). While Haka was pondering on the next move, TP Mazembe came in with an escape route for ‘Freedom’ in which they offered and paid Zanaco $50, 000 for his services and to end the controversy the Chiparamba academy graduate jumped on the move to the lubumbashi based club and penned a two year deal.

Elsewhere in the transfer window, ex-Red Arrows and Zambian striker Songwe Chalwe has been released by Mpumalanga Black Aces whom he helped gain promotion to the PSL.

Choma Eagles duo of Kebby Hachipuka and Aubrey Zulu are in Egypt attended trials.

And finally, International defender cum midfielder Misheck Lungu’s contract with Hungarian side Budapest Honved has expired. Lungu is now a free agent.

In the next 30 days or so one or two players might be joining a club in France while some players have offers from Eastern and Western Europe. Watch this space.

Good for Singuluma that his contract issue was a non-starter. Thanks Zamfoot for the clarity.

Zambian football still has a long way to go in terms of organization. The unfortunate thing is that the necessary changes only require the will and desire of those at the helm. I believe with organized structures will come reputable agents/managers who will facilitate moves for players to better leagues.

I don’t think this is the right move for Kasonde.I feel he is one deciplined & talented genuinely young player who has the potential of going places & I don’t think Sundan is the right stone to step on for such a promising talent.Again this goes back to the calibre of adminstrators we have at club level.

In has much has we blame our collapsed football standards on the demise of the giant ZCCM, I think the calibre of football adminstrators has also been a major contributing factor.Surely 12 years from the time the last mine was sold we can still be complaining about lack of finances if football adminstrators knew what is expected of them?.Corporates spend billions to market their products & services but our clubs like Nkana & Wanderers are wallowing in poverty despite enjoying the largest fans base in the country. Why have adminstrators at the two clubs failed to initiate projects that can make them take advantage of their fans to make money?.How much can teams like Nkana,Might,Power,Warriors etc raise if they made replica jerseys & other club branded products for sale?.We always boast of talent but what have we done to improve the way we groom & market our players so that we begin to get reasonable earnings from the sale of our players abroad ?.Former Power coach in the 2004 & 2005 seasons EDDIE MAY was recently appointed head coach for the Scottish premiership side Firlkik. Why can’t Power utilise this connection & market their promising stars by arranging fo trials with EDDIE’s new club?.There are so many examples I can give but to cut the story short our football adminstrators lack creativity & other managerial skills.Personal vendattas are the order of the day at the expense of real football issues. Why should we allow our players to sign for clubs in countries like Congo & Sudan if we have an agenda to develop our local game?.We always talk about our players moving to some equally crap league as a steping stone why can’t we create that steping stone here?.Today people are hiding in the name of poor sponsorship but when I look at the ZPL clubs only LD,Roan,City & Chambeshi have no corporate sponsorship.Clubs like Zesco,Zanaco,Power,GBFC, Arrows,Blades etc are taken good care of by their sponsors but their adminstrators can’t even go an extra mile & initiate other projects.LETS MAKE THE CHANGE!!

LOL! How do you guys plan on beating Algeria @ home when your best players play in such leagues.. comon SUDAN??? Are you serious. Football is in Europe, just like our team wich have quality players from the best clubs in Europe. Karim Ziani Marseille, Abdel Ghezzal AC SIENA, Mourad Meghni S.S.Lazio, Majid Bougherra Glasgow Rangers and the list goes on. Algeria – Zambia is going to be a 0 – 4. Good luck!

I have to back my Algerian brother on this one. It seems Zambian players just want to leave the country for anywhere. I guess when you have nothing anything is better. Time after time we see Zambian players settle for unknown leagues. This is predatory signing. Sudan, Angola, What? Come to America or Mexico they are looking for skilled players.

Dinamo you raise a lot of interesting points. If we as a nation could start answering these legitimate questions, then we would be headed in the right direction. It’s just hard to understand why we have been so stuck in mediocrity without raising a single alarm all these years! Like I said earlier it’s a matter of getting organized. But we have to have the will and desire to make a change for the better.

Zambia as whole, not only in football, is associated with mediocrity. Settling for less is the name of the game in Zambia. Look at the quality of leaders even in government. Not to even mention FAZ executive. They are all useless. Surely 45 yrs after independence we are still struggling in everything: economy, political, infrustructure, social, sport, etc. Its really a BIG SHAME.
How can a player of Kasonde’s calibre sign for a Sudanese club of all teams surely? Nangu kutemwa money, thats not the way to go. As long as Zambian players continue accepting contracts with useless clubs, Zambian football is doomed. Forget about qualifying to world cup, not anytime in the next 20 years. “Copper” Bullets’ portion is qualifying to AFCON and being eliminated in the first round. They just go there as tourists. After that ati its going back to the drawing board. How many times are we going to do that? Always banking on mathematics in order to qualify to world cup, how. 2-0 loss at home to Algeria and hoping to beat them in their backyards, how foolish can we think like that?
Zambian society (not only football) needs a complete overall.
We need psychological education from childhood to educate our children how to have confidence, training them on high quality of life, not accepting less, being patriotic, hard working, die-hard attitudes, being selfless to serve the country as leaders and not being stingy. The list goes on and on. There is a lot I want to say. God help Zambia.

Mourad Meghni Likely To Represent Algeria Against Zambia
The French-born midfielder has completed his paperwork in order to switch allegiances and play for the Fennecs.
According to Le Buteur magazine, former France U-21 player Mourad Meghni will see his dream of representing the country of his parents as early as Algeria’s next World Cup qualifier, against Zambia on September 6.
He is set to be one of the first footballers to benefit from FIFA’s recent decision to do away with the rule prohibiting a player from switch allegiances after he has passed the age of 21. This is highly appropriate considering that Algerian Football Federation was the body that originally proposed the rule change.
Meghni, who is now 25 years old, has repeatedly said that he is impatiently waiting for the opportunity to represent Algeria in international play, and his family have settled and sent in the last pieces of paperwork.
The Lazio player already has the support of national team talisman Karim Ziani, who has cited Meghni as the example of the type of player he wants incorporated in the side, especially in light of Mehdi Lacen’s hesitancy to embrace his heritage.

He not only attacked the dignity of the Algerian players but also their heritage and religion (I can show you proof if you want). There is just no reason for such animosity and hostility.
