Mweene being courted by Soweto giants?

May 29, 2009

mweene
Chipolopolo Boys first choice goalkeeper Kennedy ‘Kapalayi’ Mweene is not going anywhere but anyone interested in signing the Zambian goalkeeper judged the best in the land should be prepared to pay R10 million for his services.

It has been reported that the country’s top sides, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, are interested in the Zambian international a few days after he was voted the Absa Premiership Goalkeeper of the Year.

But a fuming Rantsi Mokoena, spokesman for the Free State Stars team that took nearly everyone by surprise when they surged up the league table from position 14th to finish fourth, said the player was not for sale.

“Kennedy is happy here,” said an exasperated Mokoena. “He has a contract with us, a contract that will only expire at the end of June in 2011 and I am not amused to hear stories that certain clubs are targeting our player.

“Now let me point out that I am not generally implying that Chiefs and Pirates are tapping Mweene. I’m just saying we have also heard reports that several teams in Gauteng are chasing Kennedy and some of them are actually speaking to him and we are not amused at all.

“The player has been with us for the past four years and nobody cared. Obviously he has always been a top class, quality goalkeeper but we have also played our part in grooming him. And now that he is reaching his full potential, he is getting this unwarranted attention.

“What actually makes me sick is that some of the clubs are not respecting us as a team by directly approaching the player. If they had come to us as the rules require, we would be willing to talk but they show scant respect to Free State Stars as a team by directly approaching the player.

“Anyway, if they are really interested in the player, we are willing to listen to offers but I want to inform them that the player is worth R10 million. That’s it! Anyone interested can come to our offices and let us talk; otherwise the player is going nowhere.”

Mweene has certainly been one of the most outstanding players this season and little wonder the so-called big fish in the Premiership are sniffing at the club’s door in the hope of luring him to their respective camps.

Pirates have had Moeneeb Josephs as the number one but when he was injured, his deputy Senzo Meyiwa seems to have been affected by sitting on the bench and had a couple of matches he would like to forget in a hurry. Pirates reportedly have have been talking to Emile Baron of Kaizer Chiefs as a possible replacement.

The latter’s contract expires at the end of June and he will be a free agent. And Chiefs will obviously like to have another good goalkeeper who will keep Itumeleng Khune on his toes after they failed to renew Baron’s contract.

Upcoming Interview –

Zamfoot will be conducting an interview with Kennedy Mweene, and we encourage fans to submit their questions (below). Look for the interview in the upcoming weeks as the countries #1 goalkeeper, and PSL Goalkeeper of the Year, travels the road to 2010 in South Africa.

  2. Gesh on Fri, 29th May 2009 12:23 PM

No i dont agree, movin to a big club will limite his playing time-unless during his negotiations he emphasises da point tobe # 1…our national team # 1 needs tobe playing week in-week out…

  3. Chamz on Fri, 29th May 2009 12:47 PM

Gesh, No. In a good team players fight for places. So he must fight to be number one.

Sorry to divert attention, now Pastor makembo has written to Rb to make our home matches free, is he normal?

I hope kennedy’s team is not just jacking up his transfer worth, but also his salary. Its good to know that Myafricanfootball.com will be broadcasting the game.

In some teams it takes a miracle to off-seat some of these positions. Believe you me if he went to Pirates with Moneeb there, he would get less than half the game time he is getin at free state stars. I also think he should move to Gauteng but he should be very careful were. At Chiefs khune being the main man for the National teams worldcup plan will not be put on the bench no matter how much better Mweene is so Chiefs should be a no go area at the moment. For a big money move platinum stars will probably do but then again for all the money they have they have no trophies in the cabinet. Super sport would be a good option and is a team that seems willing to venture out into Africa and play CAF games. For me a Gauteng team for good football and quality game time would be Supersport and if he is aiming at a big money move then Platinum stars or you guessed it!! Sundowns.

Makembo, eish no comment just a simple KAYA!!!!

spaks :Sorry to divert attention, now Pastor makembo has written to Rb to make our home matches free, is he normal?

Free of charge? And why write to RB? Has RB become President of FAZ? If Govt will interfere in FAZ affairs we all know what to expect

Is he going to conduct prayers at the stadium or?? I wish to advice Makembo to go and see a doctor at chainama hills hospital ASAP.

And how will those to watch be chosen when it is free, Jesus Christ

I think Mweene should be a bit patient because as far as I am concerned he is good enough to play in Europe. There are many goalkeepers in Europe at his height and are managing and most of them are not better than him. He has imporved tremendously and has great potential of becoming a great goalkeeper

  10. Mabbwana on Fri, 29th May 2009 2:11 PM

Am sure Mweene will make a good decision on his move coz he seems quite disciplined. All the best to Mweene. I was also dismayed by the pastors remarks.

LOL, you see guys. This story of our dearly beloved Pastor now going to the Head of State with such a trivial request whilst his excellency should be concentrating on critical issues like building a prosperous nation, education, health care, job and wealth creation. Ba Pastor writes to him asking for games to be free. LOL. Do you remember the FAZ debate we had last week. You see, in my opinion it seems like FAZ is not in full control of all things football in Zambia. Before I am accused of being anti FAZ, I would like to state that FAZ has not done anything wrong in this case. However, it seems like they keep getting by passed, side stepped and dribbled. Football issues should be dealt with by FAZ and FAZ alone. Even the President should drive his initiatives through FAZ. That is a more sustainable approach. What happens if Rupiah is impeached. Or if the next head of state is not interested in football. I repeat, I am not blaming FAZ but surely there is something not right if the mother body keeps getting toyed with. Pastor, surely you do not represent the fans because all fans know that Zambian football needs all the revenue it can get. Hmmmmm.

As for Mweene, it is tricky. Like Big Steve said, game time at some of the clubs being mooted may not be guaranteed. Yes a move to a big club seems good on face value but we are at a critical juncture in our qualification campaign. We need our first choice keeper to be in good knick. This requires playing regularly. Think it through Kennedy. If they are indications of regular game time then go for it but be careful. I hope those around you are not just seeing Dollar signs when they look at you and that they actually have your best interests at heart. Wishing you well.

  14. DaMwiinger on Fri, 29th May 2009 3:02 PM

There is an arguement that the best goalkeepers don’t play for the best teams…..

  15. Vincent Numbwa on Fri, 29th May 2009 3:02 PM

Mweene should not rush to biger clubs where he wont have game time unless it is in Europe not within SA. Guys from SA tell us is Free State too small a club to expose Kennedy to team in Europe?

  16. SONG on Fri, 29th May 2009 4:16 PM

DaMwiinger :There is an arguement that the best goalkeepers don’t play for the best teams…..

DaMwiinger I first heard of this argument from a friend a few years ago. This is the time when mweene was playing for Kitwe United and my friend highlighted the fact that despite kitwe united being at the bottom of the league table, they had conceded the least number of goals in the premier league. This according to him was because of the quality of their goalkeeper kennedy Mweene who through his good goalkeeping skills had kept score lines respectable.

  17. Justice Kafusha on Fri, 29th May 2009 5:23 PM

    Makembo should write to RB asking him;

    1. To direct ZESCO not to increase the tariffs
    2. To direct National Millers to reduce the price of mealie meal to 30 pin
    3. To direct Chipungu to ensure that the Grandstand at the Independence Stadium is
    completed before the Egypt game

Makembo I wish to thank you very much in advance
