Musonda to join RoPS, Mweetwa to go surgery

Zambian division one north Afrisports Striker Christopher ‘Jancker’ Musonda is expected to leave for Finland this week to join top flight side RoPS this week. (The one in picture is Chanda Mwaba)

RoPS managing director Jouko Kiistala and Afrisports director Gabriel Kaunda confirmed the developments.

“Next week a striker Christopher Musonda arrives RoPS. We hope Musonda will replace Mweetwa during the first rounds of Veikkausliiga and when Mweetwa is okay then they can build up a certain dual.” Kiistala says.

“We were already after him last season but at that time we couldn’t come to terms with his club.” Kiistala continues.

The gangling striker almost joined RoPS in December 2007 but unfortunately a deal did not materialise. Last year in November Chipolopolo Boys coach Herve Renard called Musonda to the local squad which was preparing for the Angola game but the striker failed to impress the Frenchman and subsquently he was dropped.

And still in Finland, RoPS striker Nchimunya Mweetwa’s injury ‘curse’ has continued as the former Kitwe United forward is scheduled to go for a knee surgery on April 6th and he will be on fit after four to five weeks from surgery.

RoPS’ doctor Matti Vähäkari told to newspaper Lapin Kansa that this is not the same injury that showed up last season.

“We have used the very best professionals, and they believed a long time that Mweetwa’s knee needed just rehabilitation. It’s easy to be wise afterwards and say that Mweetwa would be fit to play if the injury would be noticed immediately. This is really big setback for us.” Kiistala commented to Lapin Kansa

Mweetwa was an instant hit his debut season in 2007 as his stunning 17 goals in 25 matches guided RoPS back to the top flight. Last season, the man the Buchi Boys nicknamed Drogba scored 4 goals in the first 7 matches but a knee injury kept him out of the rest of season.

While his RoPS teammate duo of midfielder Chanda Mwaba and defender Stephen Kunda featured as guest players for Power Dynamos at the end of the Zambian Premier League last, Mweetwa continued his rehabilitation in Kitwe.

Other Zambians on the books of the Zeddy Saileti’s RoPS are newly signed from Young Arrows Whiteson Simwanza and Chileshe Chibwe who is also in his third year with Finish side. Afrisport teenage Godfrey Chibinga is also attending trials at the club.

This is good development but seing that non of the guys seem to be able to move from this league once they get there places a bit of doubt in my mind. But in any case he is a young lad and this pro stint can only do him good.

Algeria Skipper Karim Ziani Surprised By Zambia
The Olympique Marseille midfielder has explained that he was somewhat taken aback by the Zambian national team’s level of play.

Algerian national team captain Karim Ziani has told Le Buteur that was not expecting Zambia to put in such an impressive performance against continental champions Egypt in Cairo. The Copper Bullets from the south of Africa managed to tie the Pharaohs 1-1 in a match where they had their fair share of chances.

“I watched the match with my family and I can assure you that from what I’ve seen in the encounter both Zambia and Egypt are solid. I was very surprised by Zambia’s level. They are really tough. We will have to be very strong if we want to beat them,” said the playmaker.

Ziani, who is still recovering from adductor surgery and expected to be out for approximately one more month, was missed in his team’s goalless draw in the Desert Foxes first group match against Rwanda in Kigali on Saturday but has already promised that he would do all that he can to be ready to take on Egypt in Blida on June 7th when the two teams face off in a what promises to be a high octane match up.

“Right now we have lots of solutions. It is imperative that we win against Egypt in Blida on the 7th of June. After that we will try to get a good result against Zambia. We all saw on our own that Zambia will not be so simple as some people wanted us to believe. I repeat, they will be tough competition,” he concluded.

    Ba Kalampa :
I wonder why Zeddy cant link up ROPS to Nkana FC. It would really be very helpful to Nkana, what do u guys think?

Once you get your administrators to understand the need for accountability and transparency and corporate governance even Liverpool would help the ailing teams however we all know what goes on in the clubs, ni personal to holder as long as we have that attitude forget, when were election lats held at Nkana? in the days of chilumanda if i’m not mistaken so how can you explain such?

I think it depends which club one joins. If one joins a club taking part in the Champions league and UEAF the chances of moving on a big. I know that clubs like Haka and HIK are always on top, while ROPS with all respect are always at the bottom.

are our players gaining anything from rops, coz no one seems to be ticking in europe or attracting scouts from big leagues.

  • chamwe kaira wrote on 2 April, 2009, 10:43

I have always said our players lack ambtion:
Yakubu started in Isreal, Obi-Norway, there is a boy at Ajax Amsterdam from Cameroun who was until last year at Ajax, Cape Town. Benjani was at jomo Cosmos. The list is endless. Maybe is because we bloggers are more educated but if I was a footballer in Finland like these guys, I will use that as a stepping stone. Travel around in the off season selling myself. That is what Nigerians do and Yobe said it when he answered our questions. South Africa, Finland, Isreal should not be the end.

  • Seen from afar wrote on 2 April, 2009, 11:05

Mabbwana summed it up very well.

It’s funny to think that none of our boys have been snapped up in Europe after recent times, that’s ok for now. Making our opponents aware of abilities and realizing our long brewing ambitions and dreams is another. We will not rest on this. It’s a bit of a come down from the heights of the Egypt game, but Rwanda will swing around in no time and then Algeria, we will remain steadfast.

  • chamwe kaira wrote on 2 April, 2009, 11:13

On the other hand, Egpty has proved that you can do with local players. So the argument is 50-50.

This captain of algeria is nuts.how could he have thought that the zambia game was going to be easy for them when in actual fact they can’t even remember the last time they played at the world cup?Later on they failed to beat rwanda? To me,they are the weakest team in our group.

  • chamwe kaira wrote on 2 April, 2009, 11:39

Saks it true. I think Egpty/Algeria will end in draw.

  • Amuna Onzuna wrote on 2 April, 2009, 11:42

Yes indeed, like Chamwe Kaira says,Our Players lack ambition. The leagues they go to should be stepping stones, now it seems once a Zambian Player signs for a small club in Europe then they think its okey. They should fight for fame and get noticed.Im disappointed with the way Mbesuma has handled himself ever since he shot to fame at Kaizer Chiefs. He should have used the opportunity of going to England to be noticed but instead,we were having stories of injuries all the time(kunamizila Injury).Fame in SA went to his head.

  • FIFA wrote on 2 April, 2009, 11:42

This guy just wants to put pressure on Zambia. He deep down in his heart knows that all the teams partcipating in the WC qualifiers are strong all capable of quqlifying.Let our team not fall to these psychological traps.

  • Romantic Monk wrote on 2 April, 2009, 11:53

As we appreciate the Egypt result ,lets not exert pressure on our team its such pressure that made us Struggle at home against Chad and SA despite beating them 2-0 and 3-1 in thier own back yards. It s the same pressure that made us lose 5 1 to Cameroon at AFCON despite having a brilliant start 3 0 bashing of The Nile crocodiles. Our Under20 did well 3-3 in Egypt but we lost at home 1-0

  • chamwe kaira wrote on 2 April, 2009, 12:21

From what I’ve seen I think its not advisable for young players to go to ROPS or finish league for that matter. Zeddy Saileti is old so he does not count, I watched some videos of Zambian’s playing in Finland. The league does not seem to be competitive, even our first division must be more competitive than the finish league. These young lads are better off jump starting their careers in the South African league. There’s always scouts who look for players in the south African league.
