Fwayo ‘relegated’ to Etoile’s reserve side
Zambia’s export to Tunisia Fwayo ‘The Galactico’ Tembo has been ’sent back’ to Etoile Sportive du Sahel reserve team or team ‘B’ after the club acquired two South American players and the return of highly rated Ghanian under-20 international Sadat Bukhari from injury.
While the Zambian teenage was looking to be making steady progress as he was enjoying his first team action thanks to the injury of Bukhari and the departure of Tunisian play maker Amine Chermiti to Germany’s Bundesliga, Fwayo’s relegation will come as a surprise to many Zambian fans who thought the 2007 African Youth Cup top scorer has finally made his breakthrough in the star studded first team.
According to Zambianfootball.net contact in Tunisia, the new Etoile du Sahel coach thought it wise to send the promising starlet to the reserve side because this will allow him play regularly as opposed to being on the bench.
”After a period of ‘bad results’ and the changing of the trainer (the club hired Germany born coach Gernot Rohr recently), Fwayo Tembo has been transfered to the reserve side (under-21) to allow him play regularly since he won’t be guaranteed a starting place in the main team,” the Zamfoot contact said.
“Tembo will have to work hard to earn a place back to the main team” he warned
Though Etoile du Sahel is lying third after 18 games in the Tunisian Super League table with 35 points, 8 points behind leaders Esperance, the 2007 CAF Champions League winners are yet to record three successive wins in row.
Since beating Jendouba Sport 3-1 on 16 November 2008, in a match Fwayo scored a brace and was voted man of the match by the fans on the club’s official website poll, Etoile has only recorded six wins from 13 matches. From this background, the club bought two South American; Everson da Silva and Mendoza plus a couple of West African to reinforce it’s troops and there was no place for Fwayo who is poised to make his international debut against Egypt next month in the club’s official 25 man squad registered for the league.
Fwayo (11) impressed national team trainer Herve Renard last year when the 19 year old starred in 4-3 aggregate defeat against the Young Pharoahs of Egypt in the African Youth Championship final round legs.
With news of Fwayo’s lack of first team action (this year) and Jacob Mulenga’s thigh injury, Chipolopolo Boys trainer Herve Renard might have a çhange of plan on his game plan for the Egypt clash after earmarking the duo alongside Chris Katongo’s Zambia’s main threats.
Jacob’s teammate at Chateauroux, Felix Katongo is also not yet a regular while Stophira Sunzu is still featuring in reserves.
In South Africa, Renard has atleast one positive to look to after Collins Mbesuma and Clifford Mulenga both featured for their respective clubs. On the negative, Supersport United duo of Noah Chivuta and Davies Nkausu still can’t command first team place.
So far, the quintuple of Chris Katongo (Germany), Justine Zulu, Emmanuel Mayuka (both Israel), Rainford Kalaba (Portugal) and Andrew Sinkala (Germany) and the only playing week in and out in their respective clubs in Europe.
In scandanavia, the league starts in April meaning Isaac Chansa and co. are still doing pre-season.
With less that 50 days left before the clash against the Pharoahs in Egypt, Zambia’s preparings look to be shambles after Cameroon opted to play Guinea last night in Paris in an international friendly.
Should Herve Renard call Fwayo Tembo for the Egypt game? Have your Say

People who followed Zambian football when teams like Nkana,Power,Warriors & Might were strong sides on the continent will agree with me that we had strong reserve teams that can’t even be compared to some teams we currently have in the league. In those days there was competition at club level b’coz reserves had good players who could replace any out of form or injured player from the main team.We currently don’t have quality reserves in the country & this is why it is sounding strange when we hear of reserves from countries that have kept that standards.Fwayo will be playing in the reserve team but he will be training with the main team meaning he will still be capable of contributing at national team level.
Ba Dinamo,
Solution:
1. We need to invest in infrastructure, stadia and playing turfs(begining of brilliant players) that we had those days with ZCCM coming in handy unlike the non-caring Mopani, KCM etc
2. We had strong reserve leagues those days that we need to restart.
3. We need to devorce FAZ from running the league by having the National Football League to run the league. I just wonder how much time our FAZ Veep who is in charge of the league has, what with his other commitments-NCC,MP etc.
4. Soccer fans just need to deep further in their pockets to sustain teams and ultimately we will see budding starts rising
He must prove himself. As easy as that. If he is good, why did they send him to the reserves, let him work hard.
Why is Renard ignoring Clifford Mulenga ? The boy has been playing well in SA but he could not even be called amongst the Sa based professionals for that freindly. I thought him and Renard had buried the hatchet over that little misunderstanding. Anyone with data ?
Kolokombwa,
In as much as Clifford is a good player, his position in the national team is not guarrantteed looking at the midfielders we have such as Kalaba, Felix Katongo, Chris Katongo, Hachipuka, Sinkala, Chansa etc. You can agree with me that the above mentioned players will be given first preference to Clifford. However, Clifford is a good player who can make an impact in a game as well as a substitute. He is yet to be a complete player having watched him. He is a good future prospect.
It might be an eye openner for Fwayo to work hard and be consistent. After he score a brace, its like he decided to sit back instead of continuing to score.Im so sure he will pick up again.
The coach should call fwayo,he is better than other fellows who normally enjoy faz feva….
I like the maturity of Zambian fans on this web site.Guys continue doing your thing maybe one day people will know that its not easy for an African player to play in Europe for over 10 years. In some European countries you can’t even find an African player captaining a club but some of us Zambians have broken such records though suprisingly our own brothers & sisters regard us as finished & aged when some of our age mates who have never even been to Europe are regarded as dependables.I shade tears when I read Mwape Miti’s profile and I thought this is a heroe who has never been recognised in his country. We have many such players in Europe & I believe if we became united we have what it takes do even better than what Senegal did at the 2002 world cup.I rest must case peace!!!
We need clifford against Egpty, his running will create a lot of scoring chances for Mbesuma, Jacob, Chris. We pick Felix who is not playing at all instead of Clifford?
Fwayo, when called to the 1st team, he should have proved himself then. i mean, relegation to reserves when your age mate, not neccessarily more experienced looking at age, this ghanaian under 20 striker must be better than Fwayo. Our players need to really fight for these positions. The possiblility of Fwayo returning to the 1st team are even slimmer now that the new coach has even acquired 2 new strikers meaning the Fwayo has dropped to bottom in this coaches pecking order. Am just disappointed that he couldn’t hold on to the position even after being given a chance to prove his worth.
As for Clifford, i think he lacks maturity that is why he misses out. compare our left wingers in him (clifford) and Felix, but with the supposedly dip in form of Felix and his prowess in the SA league, who knows he could get the call up,after all he is Kalusha’s boy and ba Kalu can easily influence HR.
Fwayo should just wprk hard and regain his place. I believe there is a good player in him.
He should be given chance at the national team to prove himself. If he is worth a spot good enough.
Fwayo is a talented young man.i think it’s high time he was given a chance to prove him self in the Senior National Team.
there is no need to worry about fwayo, he is still young and he should be able to work hard from the reserve and earn a place in the first team. After all, playing in a serve team is better than the bench in the first team.
To answer your question, he should be considered for the national team.
Jimbo dont be too harsh on the boy.I belive hes a good player with time he will get back to the main team.Form at times fluctuates look at Drogba with Scholari the guy was being benched for nothing.
The are many factors why players are relegated to the bench or reserves. As the coach has said let him just work hard.
Zamfoot definately we neeed to have Fwayo in the National team.He can add much value.
@Oranges & Apples
Who are you for real?
At the rate things are going, qualifying to the world cup seems like a pipe dream. On a FIFA recognised dy for freindlies, we have failed to even secure a game against the likes of lesotho or swaziland. All the serious contenders on the continent are involved in freindlies. How do we improve our FIFA rankings if we are busy playing National Assembly at Barclays sports complex. With our current ranking, we are not an attractive prospect for freindlies . I think our administrators should spend a bit more time on their desks to plan and not rush to contest CAF elections which they themselves know they are not ready for. Prove yourself at home, otherwise our Fwayos will have no future.
Sibs, its not neccessarily being harsh on the boy, it just hurts me that every direction you look a Zambian footballer is benched by our west or north africans counterparts. Surely, this should signal something is amiss amongst our players. Anyway, i have watched Fwayo play & i do agree he is a good player, but he needs to get better than the other guys. It would just feel better to hear the Ghanaian player being relegated instead of a Zambian.
Let us wait and see, football is sometimes about up and downs. Fywayo should just work hard and so should Chivuta, Felix and Nkausu. There is no 2 way about this.
This joke of a coach should have made this decision before the transfer window closed. With his current good form alot of teams could have gotten him on loan. The new coach knew before he bought the new players that fwayo wasnt part of his plans why not tell the boy? Tunisia is a joke of a destination even south africa is better.
Gents who is this Oranges & Apples?.He is sounding like Moses Sichone
ba Oranges and Apples, loyalty to your nation is very important. You will never be a legend in your country if you dont put up memorable performances for your country, in short, you have to play as many games as possible. Mwape Miti is not a Zambian legend, simply because of turning his back on us when we most needed him. If you are indeed Moses Sichone as Dinamo suspects, you are equally not a legend because you held the nation to Ransom and demanded what you obviously knew the countrty could not afford ( 5 pin USA i think , and yet, you were getting ten pin per month. The soccer fans here are crying for Andrew Sinkala because of the work ethic that he brings to the team. You can see that he has the heart for Zambia and he would like to be part of the action. When he saw that the money FAZ was offering was peanuts, he still played and donated his allowance to an orphanage. Andrew is therefore more respected in Zambian circles.
To start with, lets allow Fwayo to pick up himself and work harder. I believe he has good talent and will get back. The coach must always, and where possible call as many players as possible for assessment, otherwise, he will be playing names and not quality. Places in the national team shouldn’t be guaranteed.
ORANGES & APPLES, who are you please, tell us where you captained a team and enlighten us on your experinces. Its difficult to believe you that you captained a ‘team’ in Europe and us the Zambian fans never knew you.
One thing I can agree with you is yes its not easy for an African player to feature in Europe for ten years, but we have the likes of Kanu, Eto etc who have played at a high level. All these are Africans, but us Zambians just dont exert ourselves and thats why they send us back quickly like Mbesuma, Isaac who wants to get back to Zed, shame. We must learn to be ambitious and operate at a high level, not joking in RSA amateur teams. All in all, let Fwayo & Clifford be assessed before being ignored by the coach.
Jimbo thanks for your reply.I agree with you that it would been better for the Ghanian to be relegated to the bench than umu boys.Like most guys have said our players need to be just aggresive & continue to work hard. They boys should also know that talent alone wont get them to places but their work rate matters.
Of course Fwayo is a good choice. He might all of sudden be playing for the reserves but he has played and contributed to main team, which is the highest the quality in Africa, that can’t be under rated.
DOOMS DAY FOR ZAMBIA
THE CHIPOLOPOLO TODAY DROPED 16 PLACES ON THE FIFA RANKINGS WHICH PUTS THEM OUT OF THE TOP 20 OF AFRICA WHILE RANKED 92. THIS IS THE WORST THAT ZAMBIA HAS BEEN ON THE FIFA RANKING.THEY ARE NOW RANKED 24TH IN AFRICA.
ZAMBIA ARE NOW THE UNDERDOGS OF THE GROUP IN THE WORLD CUP QULIFIERS.
EGYPT
ALGERIA
RWANDA
ZAMBIA
ahhhhhhhhhh!….just when u think thing are improving.
National Assembly at Barclays?? Not even a Premier Division team? We are going to be slaughtered by Egypt and our ranking will be even worse. It is time to take action.
I agree with Apples & Oranges, we don’t fully understand the level of football being played in these ’small’ European and North African nations. Compared to the Zed Premier and even SA it is a huge jump and we need to accept that the caliber of our local league is poor. Guys, please ask yourself why so many of our pro’s (both past and present) don’t want to play for Zed. The answer is simple. They are given a raw deal by FAZ. We have over 10 former professionals lounging in Europe and not willing to assist because they know that their efforts will just be thwarted. We need a complete overhaul of Zed football to stop this slide.
Zamfoot, any news on the proposed sponsorship deals or should we not hold our breath. Also, my post of the other day has disappeared, that is the fourth one? Why is this happening?
live international football, footysports.tv/contents/#splayer OR justin. tv enjoy, sad that zambia ain’t playin
Thanks for the info Fact. That is dramatic to be at the worst position ever, but i think it’s ok as it brings home the truth. Time for the present generation to realize that they are responsible for the upholding the country now. It’s high time Zambia clawed back some respect and re-established itself with some solid and genuine performances.
I think on this blog and maybe people in general, we have been highly critical to the point of being too negative. The way forward is a two pronged affair, the current team and the future standard of football. We need to ensure a much higher standards for future and that is what we look to Kalusha to do for the game right now.
He can do it, but his player reputation won’t do it for him. We know what the problems are, but it’s going to take serious and sustained groundwork for a real plan of action to make a difference. Who is actually going to do this? How many people work at FAZ, who does what? Who is going to actually access and communicate the developments that should be implemented and maintained through out the country, because it must be more than giving new jerseys and footballs to a team. Sure, sponsorship deals, the normal running of the game and other things take the attention of the admin, will they also be able to insure this big development for the future? Maybe they should bring in help?
There is talent, thats why we can’t accept this current predicament.
It’s not right to discount the current team, if the organization is there then we can compete for something.
Thanks the update Josef,RSA who scored for chile?
any points from the Egypt and ghana game…would think there would be a scout there for Zambia to assess Egypt…
Ba Josef RSA,
Awe iyo iya “Black and Non-Muslim” naikana. Bubble Malitoli is revered by Espereance to date because of hard work on the pitch and always fitting in the coach’s plan. We see here that Fwayo doesn’t fit in the new coach;s (AM SURE HE’S NOT MOSLEM) style. Why do we always look for akabepesho in Zambia when things go against us. Just recently Fwayo was featuring prominently and we didn’t raise the racist remarks, but after losing inamba kumu South American, racism becomes an issue.
Guys, no sour grapes on SA who beat us pants down. Chile you shouldn’t forget are on the rise and recently beat my 2nd favorite team to Spain, Los Albiceleste (ARGENTINA) tutored by an Argentine PEKERMAN who revolutionalised the Argentine team by bringing in short but tough players-TEVEZ,MESSI,MASCHERANO,RODRIQUEZ etc. Chile have a gem of a player in SANCHEZ who tormented Nigeria U20 who had just beaten Zambia U20 in Canada
WE FWAYO WE NEED FWAYO THE LAEGUE IN NORTH AFRICA GUYS IS TUFF SO AND ETOILE IS SO FAR THE BEST CLUB IN AFRICA. REANRD GIVE FWAYO A CHANCE
