KONKOLA Copper Mines (KCM) has halved its sponsorship for the 2009 Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Premier League.
Currently, the KCM Premier League sponsorship stands at K1.3 billion per year but the new development means the amount would reduce to K575 million per annum.
According to insiders at KCM, the decision was arrived at last year following the global credit crunch.
The source said the mining giants have since written to FAZ to inform the association about the decision.
The decision to reduce the sponsorship was made at the same time when the copper producing firm stopped paying national team coach Herve Renard’s salary, citing the prevailing harsh economic conditions resulting from free-falling copper prices on the world market.
Super Division league champions who were getting K100 million would now be getting K50 million while Division One and Two champions will also have their prizes cut by half.
KCM were giving the top scorer K20 million but the amount has now been cut to K10 million, with the coach-of-the-year`s award also reducing from K1 million to only K500,000.
When contacted for a comment, FAZ treasurer Boniface Mwamelo admitted that the association has received communication from KCM regarding the revised sponsorship deal.
Mwamelo said FAZ was in the process of looking for another sponsor to partner with KCM in funding the league.
He said FAZ has started holding discussions with various potential league sponsors.
“As an association, our aim is to lift the Zambian Premier League to higher standards. We are working hard to ensure we find co-sponsors and I can assure you that everything will continue running smoothly,” Mwamelo told Zambia Daily Mail
He said thanked KCM for the role they have been playing in improving Zambian soccer and hoped the company would continue working with FAZ.

Shidad Klau will never respond those questions. The man does not know what he is doing. Zambian football is on the death row and very fast. It is really a sorry sight. The truth is that there is no hope

Zamfoot the rumours on the deals sounds good & the earlier we secure them the better b’coz it seems this financial crunch is now becoming a scape goat for some companies to avoid their corporate social responsibility.

FAZ needs to organize a friendly game before we meet Egypt. IT can be a closed door game a week before we play Egypt, somewhere in Europe say Spain, France or Portugal. Our players need at least to play one game tother before we face Egypt. It won’t help just to fly to Cairo and face Egypt without the coach having a clue of the form of his players. This is a big problem and yet everyone is just silent and yet expecting magic. The days of “if god wishes we will qualify” or “by the Grace of God we may just qualify” are over or rather have never existed. I would have preferred a game Vs even a team like Uganda or Malawi than nothing. We are digging our own grave and if we loose no one should point fingers at Renard, we should just keep silent like we have done now

Zamfoot could you please on our behalf findout what plans FAZ have for the AFCON/SA2010 squad apart from their travelling and empty promises?

We have heard a lot rumours before from FAZ. The copper jersey, branding of the name “Chipolopolo”, friendly game Vs Chile, the list is endless. I feel what Zambian Soccer fans need are facts and no one deserves that more than the ever loyal chipolopolo Soccer fans.

zambia to play cameroon then ooh sorry it fell through, zambia to play DRC ooh sorry put off — the list is endless of such fake planned friendlies.

I think the FAZ should try Barclays Bank, they at one time were interested in sponsoring the league.

Shame on KCM & other mining companies. They have built Univerisities using our Copper but fail to sponsor a league?,it seems Zambia as a Country is doomed.Let us stand up and open our eyes.
