January 31, 2009

Red Arrows this afternoon run riot as they put six past helpless Mundu fc of Zanzibar in the first leg of the first round of the 2009 Confederation Cup.

And in Ndola, Clifford Chipalo came off the bench to score a brace to silence Kenyan Champions Mathare United as Zesco United head into the return leg in a fortnight time with a 2-0 caution.

Red Arrows 6-0 Mundu fc

Judge M’Kandawire (14′ 68′),  Timothy Mbewe (53rd) Kamuzati Kabwe (75′), Chisi Mbwe (85′), Chiwanki Lyianga (90)

Zesco United 2-0 Mathare United

Clifford Chipalo (59, 84)

At Nkoloma Stadium, red-hot winger Judge M’kandawire opened the gates as early as the 14th minute but the airmen had to wait till the 53rd minute when another debutant in an Arrows shirt Chipulu Chileya grabbed the second to settle the nerves of the fans.

Goals from Mkandawire (his second for the day), Chisi Mbewe, Kamuzati Kabwe and a Timothy Mbewe header and a breathtaking free kick by Lyianga Chiwanki on the stroke full time sealed the victory for the Mathews Phiri coached side.

Despite the two teams wining i dont see any of the two going far,i was @ nkoloma stadium & watched the whole match, red arrows did not win because they were great no it was mundu who were too weak, but i forgive them because football in zanzibar is just like base ball in zambia.with the exhibition that i saw red arrows can not play with the teams from the west, the north or even south african teams, they are just lurck they were given a very weak team whch in zambia can be compared to the likes of kalomo jetters.nothing to be too excited about coz mundu to me was just here for exposure,we should wait for real teams,so that we see if red arrows can aford even a smile.

Taggy! I 100 per agree wit u,mandu to me looked like a school team wit only 1 shot on target.if arrow were sharp thy could even ve put ten goals .even yamoto or might could ve betten mandu.arrows sim to have a good team bt witout strikers.all the goal came frm midifieders.infact they top men mbewe ad banda are nt strikers..real test cames against ocean boyz of nhgeria.

I wud say this was more of a practice match than u wud xpect from an international. Unfortunately Mundu didnt offer a challenge as Arrows wer superior in all depts. Intresting to note was the display of gud attacking footbal typicaly thru the flanks but very poor finishing when it comes to tapping the balls in. As others who watchd hav said, we shudnt b flattered by the scoreline coz Arrows showd alot of holes which nid to b sealed.

Well done to both Zesco and Arrows. I hope that they at least go down fighting this time, let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Guys I have to big up Matthews Phiri, this guy has won the league and come runner up, but seems to be under-rated as a coach. I wonder why he hasn’t been given a chance to be attached to any of the national teams, we need to expose as many of our local coaches as possible. It shouldn’t just be the same names all the time.

Ba Peter, where is Chileya – Blades or Arrows??

Well done to Zesco, I was at the game visiting from london and they played a great game of football. Clifford came of the bench and showed good skill in getting both goals.

    Well done Zesco Utd.
