Nkwazi coach tips Zescolo for title

November 20, 2008

KCM/FAZ Premier League coach Oswald Mutapa Jr has tipped defending champions and current league leaders Zesco United to clinch this year’s title.Click here to view the league table

Speaking to Radio Phoenix in an interview on Thursday, the Police outfit mentor whose side is battling for relegation believes Zescolo just needs to win one game from the last three league games to defend their title and emulate the success of Zanaco who won it in 2005 and 2006.

Despite failing to replicate last season’s terrific form which saw them win a domestic treble, Zega as some fans call them are top of the log table on 47 points with Warriors their nearest rival on 43 points.

Many pundits claim that the departure of midfield maestro Rainford Kalaba to Europe has contributed to their lack of champagne football that made them a marvel to watch by the local league enthusiasts (and neutrals) and disliked by their opposing fans.

In addition to the league title, the electricity boys are still on course to defend the Barclays cup but first they have to negotiate their way past tricky and stubborn Lusaka Dynamos in this Saturday’s semi-final. Already Dynamos have a psychological advantage after they stunned one of the most assembled squad on the local scene after a Josphat Nkhoma injury time scorcher propelled them to their first ever silverware in their 29 years history.

Meanwhile in the relegation zone, still one the eight clubs including Lusaka Dynamos on the bottom half of the log table can still be demoted to the lower ranks.

Five clubs namely Konkola Blades (28), Nchanga Rangers (31), Chambishi (33), Roan United (32) and Nkana (30) all sponsored by the mines haven’t yet secured next year’s top-flight status and stand a probability of being chopped down.Others are Nkwazi (29), Dynamos (33) and league debutant Green Eagles (26).

On the top scorers chart, Aubrey Zulu increased his tally for the season to 12 goals after he scored the only goal of the match as Green Eagles won the ‘Battle of relegation’ over Nkwazi in mid-week fixtures.

Last season, the top scorer award was won by Kalaba who banged 14 goals and he was followed by ex-Zesco United Enoch ‘Londole’ Sakala with 13 goals in the league.
