Nakambala stun Y/Arrows…as 2 P’Military players earn U-20 call up

Division one North Nakambala Leopards recorded the only upset in the pre-quarter finals of this year’s Barclays Cup.

The sugar boys advanced to the quarter finals after beating premier league outfit Young Arrows via a 4-3 penalty shoot out in Mazabuka.

In an early kick off game in Mazabuka, Lusaka giants and inaugural semi finalist Green Buffaloes survived a last minute scare from another lower league side Kascol Rangers.

The ‘Go and Conquer Boys’ took a 2-0 lead courtesy of a Brian Chilando first half brace but Kascol pulled one back via an Alick Mweene spot kick in the 85th minute.

At Kabwe’s Railway Stadium, the match between Zanaco and Zamtel ended in a goalless stalemate and had to be settled from a penalty lottery. Skipper Kennedy Nkhetani and veteran striker Dabwitso Nkhoma converted their spot kicks to propel the bankers to the quarter finals.

At the same venue, Lusaka Dynamos came from a goal down to claim a 2-1 victory over Nchanga Rangers in the only premiership encounter of the day.

Former Malaysia and international striker Philimon Chipeta equalized for ‘The Elite’ before another veteran striker Josphat Nkhoma.

Rangers coach Kenneth ‘Bubble’ Malitoli was handed a three match ultimatum prior to this match.

Kitwe giants, Power Dynamos thumped Kalulushi Modern Stars 3-0 with goals from international centre-back Francis ‘Mr Reliable’ Kasonde, Simon Bwalya and Dan Kasongo at Chingola’s Nchanga Stadium.

In the second match of the day at Gabittas (Nchanga) Stadium, Division one North out fit Forest Rangers were two minutes away from causing another major upset against the Barclays Cup defending Champions.

The match had every thing related to a cup match; a red card, last minute goal and it was a ‘mini’ Ndola derby.

Under-20 international striker Alex Mwiche cancelled out a Maybin Mwaba strike for Zescolo to send the two sides to half time at par.

Last year’s invincibles were forced to play with ten men after one of their players was handed marching orders on the hour mark.

Six minutes later Forest took advantage of that and took the lead courtesy of Besa Mala strike.

With a minute to go, Zesco United showed why they are the team to beat when little known reserve graduate Kondwani Chirambo equalized to send the match to the spot kicks.

Team Ya Ziko triumphed 4-2 on the post-match penalties.

At Nkoloma Stadium, a first half Musonda Mweuke goal propelled Kabwe Warriors to the quarter finals.

In the second match at Nkoloma,Red Arrows thrashed Paramilitary 7-2 with striker Namel Macha and Stanley Banda netting a hatrick and a brace respectively after enterprising midfieder Danny Sibande opened the flood gates in the sixth minute. Defender Joseph Zimba also got a rare goal.

The Police outfit got their consolation from a Bieya Ngulube spot kick and a wonder goal from man of the match Mwepya Kasongo.

With National Team trainer Herve Renard in the Grand Stand scouting for national team material.

And the Frenchman wasn’t disappointed with his choice of the match for this afternoon.

Kasongo’s dazzling runs and tricky foot work down the flank- similar to Banda ‘Thierry’ Henry ’s who was also watching the match from the stands- impressed the fans (one fan screamed kwati nika ‘Nani’ comparing the ‘New kid on the block’ to Manchester United’s Portugal international winger.

After the match, Renard instructed under-20 team manager Gift Chaipa to tell Kasongo and his teammate Gilbert Tembo to report for camp tomorrow at Mumana pleasure resort.

one thing for sure is that we wil see more deserving players in our national teams.also, its through such competitions that the much talked about untapped talent can be brought to the fore.

I watched the game between ARROWS & Military boys,it ws so nice to our strikers delivering.we all know getting goals has been giving all soccer followerz sleepless nites,,let me also tell chilewe that renard is not just coach of the senior national team,he is coach of national teams in zambia fro under 5 to abov 70,if @ we have such in zed.am sure renard will have a formatable force for the chan games when they resume in november because he has seen many excelent local players, wgjo even beter than many of these so called professionals playing in very useles south african clubs,.they are only about 3 or 4 clubs in RSA which can be considerd real big clubs, namely orlando pirates, kaizer chiefs & sandown, maybe supersport & moroka swalows, otherwise the otherz are mediocre, zambian clubs can even be beter,eg you can not compare GBFC wit the likes of BID VEST,,our playerz shd not just go to RSA for the money..

I wonder how Renard knew these two players were under the age of 20. Hope he has the record and is not just making them to be under-20 like the UNZA student who was recently put in under-17 when we all know it is impossible to start school at the age of 2 in order to be in Under-17 by the time you are in 3rd year at UNZA.

know wonder he is an exparteriate coz he does not choose da division a player from.thats enough reason to show why he a role to assist da u20.i guess our local coaches can learn more from HR.

How many penalties were attempted in the game between Zamtel and Zanaco? Please don’t tell me only three penalties were successful out of ten!
    Congratulations to the winners.

Taj you are lying. Bidvest is a good club and they are actually doing very well in the league. They are joint leaders with supersport. Yes I agree that they are some PSL teams that are not worth playing for. But Bidvest is not a bad club for a Zambian player. Clifford Mulenga is at Bidvest. Noah Chivuta was at Bidvest before joining SSport.
All in all if a Zambian player can play in the PSL provided is getting good money, so be it. Football is a short career and our players have families to look after.

  • Big Steve from SA wrote on 6 October, 2008, 8:32

I agree with Billy in that Taj is completely off the mark here with his comment on S/African clubs. There are many teams in the PSL worth playing for, not only for the financial element but also good football and coaches of international standing. If you do not follow a league I’d suggest you do not comment on it. And to make matters woorse you go and pick a big team like Wits to comment on, C’mon my man!!!!

Sugar boys showing that it is better done the sweet way than the millitant way, congrats and keep it sweet. I would also like to know the answer too Matafwali question. If this is our conversion ratio then we seriously need to look into coaching tactics on penalty kicks.

Big up HR, this is a coach doing his duty, if ttalent identificatuion is always high up on HR’s agenda thenn I think we should be seeing more Hachipuka’s soon.
