Zambian Players Abroad Weekly Review-30.10.08

September 30, 2008

Angola

Three Zambian players started for Primero de Augusto in the Girabola league match against Petro de Luanda.

International midfielder Ian Bakala had an average game in the middle of pack. Ex-Nchanga Rangers and national team striker Harry Milanzi had a major input in the only goal of the match.

After being put through by former Red Arrows winger Danny Hangunyu, Milanzi’s well taken low drive was deflected by and beat the Petro goalkeeper. With the ball heading into an empty net, Milanzi’s teammate Fofana selfishly made contact to the ball so as to claim the goal.

Despite his pass to Milanzi, Hangunyu had a poor game and was stretched off after injuring himself in the 70th minute, five minutes after Bakala was replaced. Milanzi was also substituted.

Another Zambian on the books of Primero de Augusto, Dube Phiri was unused substitute.

South Africa

Collins Mbesuma started for Mamelodi Sundowns against Davies Nkausu’s Supersport United in the Tshwane (Pretoria) derby or one of the South African mini derbies.

The 24 year old striker was substituted on the hour mark while Nkausu completed the full game. Nkausu’s compatriot Noah Chivuta is yet to make his competitive debut for Supersport United. The match ended 1-1.

In the Kwa Zulu Natal derby, Kalilio Kakonje kept a clean sheet as his club; Amazulu beat their arch-rivals Thanda Royal Zulu 1-0.

Kennedy Mweene and Clifford Mulenga came head to head in midweek for their respective clubs.

Portugal

After a burgeoning debut in midweek with a goal and an assist, Rainford Kalaba was included in Gil Vicente’s scoreless draw against SC Freamunde   in the second division league match.

France

Unlike his International midfield partner (Kalaba)’s progress, Felix ‘Katman’ Katongo was left frustrated by Rennes coach Guy Lacombe in the reserves as the playmaker wasn’t included in the team that beat Nice 1-0 in the French Ligue 1 match.

Katman made his long awaited debut for Rennes in midweek.

Still in France, Jacob Mulenga missed his third game in row for French Ligue 2 outfit Berrichonne Châteauroux due to a minor injury. New signing, Stophira Sunzu was away on international duty (Zambia v Egypt- African Youth Championship qualifier).Châteauroux won 1-0 over the weekend.

Sweden

Edwin Phiri returned to the starting line up of struggling Ljungskile SK in a league match against Djungardens.

As usual, the no-nonsense hard tackling defender entered the referee’s book when he was cautioned in the 20th minute. His club suffered a set back towards their pursuit to avoid the chop after going 2-0 down. With just six games to go, Ljungskile is currently two points above the drop zone.

Isaac Chansa’s Helsingborg IF takes on Malmo FF tonight in a league match.(an update will be given)

Boyd Mwila’s promotion chasing Ogryte IF lost 2-0 to Qviding FIF on Monday night. Despite the blow, Ogryte is tipped for a place in the Swedish top flight next season as they are currently the log leaders with 50 points.

The Zambian striker is having a goal drought since netting his hatrick last month. Mwila played the full last night and was booked in the 36th minute.

Finland

As reported on Monday, veteran and RoPS legend, Zeddy Saileti scored his fourth goal of the season in 22 appearances as RoPS beat HJK 2-0.

In the second tier, Dornwell Yobe was on target, his eighth goal for AC Oulu as they recorded their first win in over six games.

Israel

Under-20 midfielder, Justine ‘The Wardrobe’ Zulu was on target for Hapoel Be’er Sheva as the second division side won 3-0.

Zulu scored the third goal.

Germany

Andrew Sinkala’s Augsburg lost 2-0 to FSV Mainz in 2.Bundesliga match. According to the ratings, Sinkala was one of the four Augsburg players with an average mark while the rest of his teammates

Augsburg is winless with three draws in their last six league fixtures.

In the Bundesliga, Christopher Katongo played 88 minutes for Arminia Bielefeld. Bielefeld gave away a first half 1-0 lead courtesy of Katongo’s strike partner, Wichniarek to share the points with Eintracht Frankfurt.

According to the ratings, the Zambian skipper was the third best performer on both sets players on the field behind, Wichniarek, who has scored an incredible 5 goals in 6 appearances and goalkeeper Eihoff.

Katongo has scored only one goal for his new team since making his move from Denmark.

Bielefeld have amassed 6 points from 6 matches, one win and three draws.

Clifford Mulenga has started his campaign in the South African Premier League on a high note. we hope he will maintain the same spirit up to the end of the season.

Mbesuma is also gaining fitness which is great news the zambian national soccer team.

  6. Zedian on Tue, 30th Sep 2008 3:16 PM

I can see goals coming soon from Mbesuma, Kalaba, Clifford Mulenga & Chris Katongo. Im just kind of disappointed with Felix Katongo’s club. These pipo are REALLY wasting a very good potential in this guy. They must give him just that chance and they will be in for more surprises. I have a lot of faith in this guy’s determination on the pitch.

Milanzi still in the game ka!

Thanks for the updates zamfut. Keep them coming.

thanx to the Zamfoot team, “twa saanga bale teya”

Felix should continue to work hard, its not easy to play in the french ligue 1.

he should continue to work hard and he will break through.

I can see light at the end of the tunnel with our national team players. From this update, we seem to have come up with a good number of players playing abroad, at a higher level, and that way, the quality should have been lifted up, such that come the next round of world cup qulifiers, we should do better. Or, the next African cup qualifiers must be better than this tim around. However, the team selection should be very objective, otherwise, we may not benefit from this new crop of players. Only if more friendlies could be organised so that the coach can see more of our players. Boys, work hard and be disciplined. Wishing you the best in your teams.

  11. DaMwiinger on Tue, 30th Sep 2008 10:57 PM

Tanks Zamfoot for the update. What we now need are quality defenders who can make it in the big leagues

  12. Ba Ole on Wed, 1st Oct 2008 2:20 AM

The issue with Felix could be arrogant and lack of following instructions. He has fallen short even at Green Buffaloes and at Jomo Cosmos where Jomo Sono even had to send the boy back to Zambia for being indifferent and arrogant. His elder brother is a model athlete and one can even see how his career has blossomed ever since he scored those four goals against Motema Pembe of DRC. Green Buffaloes thrashed DC Motema Pembe from the DR Congo 6-1 in a Confederation Cup first round first leg tie in Lusaka in April 2004. The hero of the day for the Zambians was Christopher Katongo with four goals in the first half and Jimmy Mumba added two more after the
    break.

From that time on, we have seen a player who wanted to go to great heights and has managed through hard work and discipline. He made it as top scorer in South Africa, went to Denmark and now is in one of the best leagues in the World.

Felix needs to put his head in the right place and he will start playing.

  13. Big Steve from SA on Wed, 1st Oct 2008 8:17 AM

Zamfoot, great updates, thanx a million.

I tend to agree with Ba Ole, Felix might have the problem of thinking that Lens should recognise him at the same star quality we Zambians recognise him at. He needs to realise that reputations are built not hand given. After a full game last week to the reserves this week! there is something not right in this picture.

I said it before Chris is the sort of player that builds himself into a league. In the PSL, first season was good but in all honesty was not the greatest. Second season the whole PSL started taking notice. End of second season he was rated as one of the best the PSL had and thiird season he blossomed, he was now a gem and to top it all with a ratio of a goal per game put the cherry on top. He is not an instant impact player, given good time he will rock the German league boat. Just hope thatt his team beats relegation again this time around.

  14. Billy SA on Wed, 1st Oct 2008 12:42 PM

Patience is a virtue. My advice to Felix is to be patient. Just stick around there and work hard. France is a good destination for African players for their first time soccer career in europe. Most of these big stars like Drogba, Essien, Benjani, Adebayor etc started in France. Your attitude will determine your ultitude. By the way you still young and you can still do better. Phil Walcott of Arsenal was a regular at the bench. The little man never gave up. There he is, he is now commanding first team place in the squad. Endure young man.

  15. Disappointed on Wed, 1st Oct 2008 11:29 PM

I just had to say this. A lot of ppl will mention chris, rainford and hachipuka in the last togo game but the truth of the matter is our world class player is felix katongo. This kids goal against togo was simply magic, and his skills against tunisia in the friendly last year showed me that no one in zambia can touch this kid and with hard work he will be up with big names in africa. Remember Rennes is one of the big clubs in france so it will take time, but this is our player of the moment!!!!!!!!!!

  16. ek on Thu, 2nd Oct 2008 8:27 AM

thanx zamfoot for up date, lets wait for the right time to judge felix i can assure u felix is da “charlse musonda, godfrey kangwa, bomber banda,” zambia has being missing.the sky is da limit, advise da guy instead?

  17. Sibs on Thu, 2nd Oct 2008 9:10 AM

I feel Felix needs just to be patient. His chance will come.Rennes is no small club in France & competition is high in the team. The usually in the Uefa Cup. Guys like Stephane Mbia the Cameroonian who’s now a regular at Rennes only played 1 game in his first year at the club in 2005.The guy is now a fixture in the team .Imagine if he had given up.This is Felix first season at the club & at least his already jammed 1 game.

Admin i just checked that this update has a future date (30/10/08).

  18. The byson on Thu, 2nd Oct 2008 9:21 AM

pipo can someone tell me thats the reason yo pipo are getting it wrong the problem with felix is the language not all that you pipo are saying 1st you must consider the fact that half the pipo in the national team cant undersand english coz they aint educated so instead of learning soca it becomes getting educated look at mbesuma he spent more that half the time in england learning english and how to look at functions that kicking the ball

  19. Big Steve from SA on Thu, 2nd Oct 2008 9:48 AM

The byson, you are off the mark here with the language thing, made me laugh first time I read your comment.. professional clubs buy players from all over the place and thus always have some sort of provision to coover the language barrier, be it transllators or intensive language classes. Mbesuma could speak pretty well before he left and if I was to make a comparison he actually could speak somewhat better than Chris katongo who has gone on to be one of our major stars in two non English speaking countries. So language goes out the window in pro soccer my man, they mmake provisions.. How long did Rolandinho play in France and also in Spain and played welll despite not knowing the languages. C’mon my man!!

  20. Sibs on Thu, 2nd Oct 2008 11:57 AM

Byson, like Big Steve says the language factor does not come into play here.Football is a universal langauge.Though later one has learn the language of a particular country you in just to help you as you go the shops & stuff.Just the basics. The are a lot of examples i can give of footballers in Europe who don’t speak the language of the country the are in but still making it.
I can tell you here that Chris can’t speak Germany but hes starting every game week in week out.

  21. [stretch.dj] on Thu, 2nd Oct 2008 4:17 PM

Furthermore Byson, in sport you learn languages very easily. I learnt Bemba in 2006 when I started working at Bwana Mkubwa in Ndola. Most of the language was learnt on a little pitch in kansenshi where i would play football after work.

I have a deceased friend who learnt to speak Sotho in less than 3 months of playing with African Warriors in the Free State.

And since when has knowing english been a mark of intelligence? You know english Byson, but from your poor sentence structure and lack of punctuation it suggests that perhaps…..
