ZAMBIA Under-20 national soccer team coach Oswald Mutapa Jr yesterday said his team deserved more than a 3-3 draw against Egypt in an Africa Youth Championship first leg, final round qualifier on Sunday night in Alexandria. In a telephone interview from Egypt, Mutapa said his team deserved more than three goals because Egypt did not labour for the result.
“Like I said, football is the way you prepare, we deserved more than a draw because they (Egypt) didn’t labour in all the three goals they scored but they are equally a very strong side,” he said. “The difference is that we played quality and quick football.”
Mutapa said his side made silly mistakes which the Young Pharaohs capitalised on.
“Egypt is a strong side and they did all they could, it was a 50-50 game but the main problem which my team had is they could not defend, we lost a lot of goals through carelessness,” he said.
Zambia took the lead through Roger Kola’s free kick in the 13th minute but Egypt cut short the celebrations with an equaliser three minutes later.
However, Tunisia-based Fwayo Tembo put Zambia back in the driving seat with an 18th minute goal.
Midfielder Banda ‘Thierry’ Henry was injured 25 minutes into the game and Mutapa substituted the Zanaco player for Derrick Mwansa.
“Doctors will take him (Henry Banda) for an x-ray, he injured his foot,” Mutapa said.
In the 32nd minute, Egypt levelled the scores but hardworking Tembo completed the days job with his brace at the nick of half time.
“He (Fwayo) played one two with Kola and he shot from outside the box,” a soundingly elated Mutapa narrated.
But Zambia’s party was spoilt by the Egyptians when the hosts again came from behind for the third time on the night to level scores at 3-3 in the 60th minute.
Sensing danger, Mutapa rested Musonda Munaile for Evans Musonda in the 77th minute and later substituted Morgan Kaoma for Alex Mwiche 10 minutes to full time.
The result gives the young Chipolopolo the luxury of forcing a scoring draw of up to 2-all in the reverse fixture on October 11 at Nchanga Stadium in Chingola and still qualify for the Rwanda 2009 Africa Youth Championship.
Thanks Zamfoot for the info. Big up to the boys.
But I believe that there are repetitions in this article. I stand to be corrected if I am wrong.
Thanks for the results. Please don’t rest continue working hard and prove the Egyptians wrong when they come in Zambia.
big up zambia. rwanda here we come!
Thanx Zamfoot for the full story.I think our team was not balanced in the sense that we could not hold on to the lead on three occassions. This is truly a defensive matter which the tech team should sort out.It is also important to note that this could have been the biggest game our defenders in that team have played in thier careers and playing such a big game under floodlights also for the first time could have disturbed them. The strikers had experience in Kola and Fwayo and with the inclusion of Zulu and Mayuka in yhe next game we should expect a good game from the boys in a fortnight at Nchanga Stadium
Like Dinamo put it, our defenders might not be as exposed as our strikers are. But plenty of home work for Mutapa on the defence, probably starting with the defensive midfield. Good result, lets work on the leakages.
Billy SA, never mind the mistakes and language, formatting etc as this site is not in the lines of a very professional newspaper like the Financial Times. This is citizen journalism. However, I agree with you that Admin may need to look into issue of editing and trying to make the layout look a bit more eye-catching and professional.
I agree with you Ba Ole. Although we should not embrace mediocrity and be content with it.
The holding midfield positioning of Stophira is where I think we could have gotten it wrong. The boy still has a lot of work to do in that position. Am conforted though, that Justin Zulu will be available for the next match. The defence cannot justify conceding three goals, am just not sure if we have enough depth in that dept at this level. Just a thought, is Nyambe Mulenga still under 20? He could come in handy.
CLIFFORD MULENGA IS PLAYING SERIOSLY GOOD FOOTBALL GUYS
