FIFA Rankings
The September 2008 edition of the FIFA Rankings were released on Wednesday, and Zambia have fallen two places from 67th to 69th.
Spain remain on top following their Euro 2008 triumph, with Italy moving up to second, switching places with Germany. The highest ranked team in Africa remains Cameroon, who moved up one spot to 14th, after England dropped to 15th. Ghana is the only other African team in the top 20, at the 20th position, with Egypt not far behind at 21st.
In the complicated FIFA formula for these rankings, taking into account results over the past 4 years (older results being worth less on a sliding scale), Zambia dropped 6 points. Attesting to the complexity of the rankings is Zambia being one spot ahead of the Bafana Bafana, the only team they lost to in the month, while recording victories against Madagascar and Zimbabwe.
Zambia now sit geographically level, as they look up at Congo DR on top of them, and South Africa one spot below. Next week’s opponents Togo fell drastically, down 12 spots to 78.
Henry Nyambe
In other Chipolopolo news, versatile defender Nyambe Mulenga is recovering well from a leg injury suffered against Zimbabwe at the Cosafa Cup in July. Nyambe has resumed training with Zesco United, though he will be a spectator in Chililabombwe next week, he intends to be ready when Zesco play their next Premier League match.
Europe
Veteran defender Moses Sichone continues to train with 2. Bundesliga club FSV Mainz. The out-of-contract Copperbelt native has been trailing around Germany in an effort to find a new club. Since Sichone does not have a current contract, the transfer deadline of September 1st does not apply. The team from the Rhineland has 10 days until their next matchday after the FIFA International dates.
