August 26, 2008

The late Zambia national soccer team striker Chaswe Nsofwa’s memorial will be held on September 6 at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka.
Nosfwa’s widow Brenda said in an interview with The Post newspaper yesterday that the church service of the fallen Chipolopolo Boys striker would be preceded by the unveiling of the tombstone at Old Leopards Hill Cemetery.

“Nsofwa is a legend that side, he pictures are all over the walls at the club house and Stadium. When the fans heard that we were from Zambia, they have been very kind, helpful and supportful,” Hapoel Beer Sheva’s Justine Zulu told Zambianfootball.net in June. Nsofwa collapsed during a training match at Vasermil Stadium in a southern city of Israel.

Brenda said sports minister Gabriel Namulambe, the Football Association of Zambia and soccer fans are among the people invited for the first memorial.

“The church service will be at 09:00 hours and all the people present are expected to join the procession for the unveiling of the tombstone at Old Leopards Hill,” she said.

Brenda said players and officials from Zanaco and Green Buffaloes, which are some of the clubs Nsofwa played for locally, had officially been invited.

Nsofwa who died at the age of 27 played at the 1999 Under 20 FIFA World Cup.

The Zambian striker also played in Russia, Malaysia and Israel in his football career.

Nsofwa had just been signed on by Hapoel Beersheva in Israel before he collapsed during a training match against Maccabi Beer Sheva in the southern city of Israel and was pronounced dead at Soroka Hospital on August 29, 2007.
