Renard to recall Mbesuma

August 1, 2008

NATIONAL coach Herve Renard has hinted that he will recall striker Collins Mbesuma to solve the team’s scoring puzzle that has befallen the squad and has now reached a crisis level.

Zambia are experiencing one of the most dry scoring spells ever, having gone five competitive matches with only one goal – a penalty – against Swaziland in the 2010 World Cup and Africa

“We must find a new striker and we have one good striker who has now started training at Sundowns. I hope he will be ready for the next game,” Renard said in reference to Mbesuma.

Mbesuma, the greatest scorer since the era of Kalusha Bwalya, is on an intensive weight shedding and fitness programme at Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa where he is being assessed.

But after seeing the Chipolopolo troops fluff up scoring chances in the last five games he has been in charge of the team, Renard now believes Mbesuma may be the striker to undo the jigsaw puzzle.

Renard said the loss to South Africa was because of a momentary lapse in concentration by goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene who let Lefa Tsutsulupa’s ball from a freekick fly and nestle into the net.

“I told him ‘well done, thank you’ after the match against Zimbabwe but today he made one big mistake. That’s football, you learn if you don’t concentrate even for two seconds.

”Sometimes he likes talking to his defenders but the South African player was clever,” Renard said.

But the coach said he was impressed with the performance of the team “but the most important thing in football is the winner.”

“I am also happy with Henry Banda and Noah Chivuta. I think they will stay with me,” he said of some of the most impressive players in the squad.

Renard also called for the improvement of infrastructure in Zambia if any good development of football was to be recorded.

“In Zambia, all pitches are bad. We need to change that first. We can’t develop without good infrastructure,” he said.

Meanwhile, defender Elijah Tana strained his knee ligament and is doubtful for the match against Madagascar.

Tana will join another defender Nyambe Mulenga on the sidelines.

Mulenga had a deep laceration on his right sheen in the match against Zimbabwe and has been ruled out for about five weeks.

I personally think Mbesuma needs first to find a club and get to play competitive football.I hope that Sundowns signs him. Otherwise there is no need to bring Mbesuma whiles he is preoccupied with looking for a club/bread & butter.Though i believe like i have said before a fit Collins is deadly pa chipanda. The young boys now have a lot to learn from him(Mbesuma) in terms of finishing.
Coming to the state of the game in the country the are a lot of factors that lead us to be where we are. Most of the guys a like Dinamo, Damwiinga,Big Steve etc have brought out good points.Though R.Herve is not the main problem he could just be part of the problem.
My stake is that we should sent the U-20′s to go and play in this tournament as a preparation for the up coming game against Egypt and also for experience.Angola did just that and the young boys lost against Madagascar they did not disappoint.

Meanwhile according to the Sundowns website Mbesuma will not be part of the Sundowns team to play in the Season opening Telkom Cup.This is according to the Sundowns Coach Trott Moloto.

The issue is far beyond looking for one striker,I believe we had a reasonably good team at the CAN 2008 which could have been maintained with minimal changes .The young players we are rushing to the big stage are not yet ready for the occasion.Perhaps as someone mentioned it would have made more sense and even less embarassing if we had taken the chance of the COSAFA games to prepare the young under 20 for the Egypt game. The way we are trying players at the senior level does not show any direction and may end up confusing even the coach. You can not try a player in one game and then discard him,you may end up trying the entire league by which time we may not be in any competive tournament because we would have been eliminated in all the major tournament by the time we realise it.Stick to what you have selected and refine them until they gel and click. In Bemba we call it ULWINSO!Changing the team with each prepatory match will not work bane ba Renard, bushe muli ba ACTOR or ba COACH?

C’mon guys lets not heap it all on the coach, we do have other problems with our game at the moment, look at the number of goals the top scorers in our league have for the past three seasons. I mean this is way before Renard. We at least should agree that the Mayuka’s and Kola’s were rushed onto the big stage too quickly and we have fallen into a situation were in the absence of tsunami, chamanga, Jacob they have somewhat become indespenseble to our attack force. We currently do not have an in the box out and out goal scoring stricker. We create but the last man to tap is just not available at the moment. A good point that has come out is that we do not have luxury of time to experiment at the moment. At this point we need to have a 26 man well gelled team. We need to lose the dead meat. I know it has been a short while but the tech bench need to have that 26 man team in mind already and focus should be on the mould of style and system to be used now on.
