Tsunami opens his Bundesliga account

August 30th, 2008 17 comments

Chipolopolo Boys skipper Christopher ‘Tsunami’ Katongo scored for his new club Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday to open his Bundesliga account.

Katongo in the starting line up for a second successive Bundesliga match, scored in the ninth minute to give Bielefeld an early lead over Dutch Coach Martin Jol’s Hamburg.

Bielefeld went to the break leading 2-1 but squandered their lead and allowed Hamburg to score three goals in the second half. The match fininshed 4-2 in favour of Hamburg.

With France based striker Jacob Mulenga being on target earlier on Friday for his club Berrichonne Chateauroux, Chipolopolo Boys coach Herve Renard should be happy with news that his top two strikers were on target ahead of a must win joint 2010 World and African Cup Qulifiers against the Hawks of Togo on September 10.

Katongo and Mulenga are expected to join the rest of the lads this week.

International striker Jacob Mulenga was on target for his French Ligue 2 side Berrichonne Chateauroux in a league match against his former club Racing Strasbourg on Friday night.

Jacob has been leading his side in the absence of the club captain who is out of action. Above the Kitwe born tries to beat Strasbourg goalkeeper in Friday’s match.

Mulenga scored in the 90 minutes against his former employers where he spent a seasonal loan last season but the goal wasn’t enough as Chateauroux lost 2-1, its third defeat of the new campaign while Strasbourg took their tally to 15 points from five games played so far.

This was the 24 year old’s first goal(in 4 games) of the season and his second club competitive goal in exactly 12 months.

Chateauroux has picked six points from a possible 15 points on the table.

And after his outbursts this week, Felix Katongo was one of Rennes’ unused subs in their 2-0 win over Stabaek on Thurday in the second leg of the UEFA Cup.

Rennes booked a tie with Dutch side FC Twente after a 3-2 aggregate in the next round.

Germany

Andrew Sinkala completed 90 minutes in FC Augsburg 2-0 loss to MSV Duisburg in a 2.Bundesliga match played on Friday night.

Augsburg has collected just three points from a possible nine.

Zambia to face Togo on September 10

August 29th, 2008 6 comments

Zambia’s crucial 2010 African and World Cup match against Togo have been set for September 10.

The match was initially scheduled to take place on September 6 but FAZ asked FIFA to move it to a week later after reservation were made that it fell within the 21-days of national mourning declared by government but surprisingly enough it’s the same weekend which the Zambia under-17 will battle it out against Nambia.

Trying to avoid the club v country wrangles over the release of players, FIFA have settled for September 10, a date reserved for international football and this should also give Chipolopolo Boys trainer Herve Renard extra three days to access his  professionals.

Meanwhile the Zambia national team broke camp on Friday afternoon and are set to regroup on Monday to start preparing for the must win match.

And the Zambia under-20 team’s departure for Austrilia to participate in the invitational Canberra Youth Cup has been deffered to next Tuesday. This is after the tournament organisers made changes to the tournament which was initially scheduled to kickoff today.
