Zambia lose to SA developmental side in Cosafa Semi final

July 30, 2008

South Africa 1-0 Zambia

Zambia national team’s scoring woes continued as the Chipolopolo Boys went 1-0 down to South Africa who featured a developmental side in this year’s Cosafa Senior Challenge.

Zambia has only scored one goal (Chris Katongo spot kick against Swaziland) from open play in the last 450 minutes.

Herve Renard started with three strkers; Francis Kombe, Rodger Kola and Emmanuel Mayuka-the trio have scored 27 goals this season between them.

Zambia were shocked when South Africa took the lead courtesy of an early and cleverly taken free kick by Lefa Tsutsulupa of Moraka Swallows in the 14th minute which stunned Kennedy Mweene and caught him off gurad as he was left in despair.

It was a Ronaldinho replica free kick similar to the one he took against England at the  2002 World Cup(and from a similar distance).

“It was no accident,” enthused Tsutsulupa afterwards. “Kennedy is a great goalkeeper. But I know him from PSL games and he has this habit of wandering off his goalline. So I planned the whole operation and it came off beautifully.”

Zambia led by Banda ‘Thierry’ Henry on the left wing piled pressure but to no avail. And Power Dynamos defender Francis Kasonde should have done better from point blank position when he failed to connect from a Kombe square pass.

Renard shuffled the team; introducing Young Arrows wingers duo of Lyianga Chiwanki and Judge M’Kandawire for  Billy Mwanza and Clive Hachilensa respectively.

Their introduction added purpose and urgency to the attack but failed to unlock the disciplined second string South African team which sat back and tried to catch Zambia on the break.

Captain of the day, Elijah Tana was stretched off and replaced by under-20 striker Morgan Kaoma.

Zambia’s best effort came from Supersport United midfielder Noah Chivuta whose well taken free kick was acrobatically tipped over the bar by the South African shot stopper.

In a post match interview Renard said,” The problem is the scoring, we played well but again it’s the scoring.”

“I think we were unlucky,” added the Frenchaman

Zambia will face Madagascar in the third and fourth playoff after losing 2-1 to Mozambique in the other semi final.

“But one bad mistake and finishing that made me want to cry undid all our enterprising play and ball possession. Still I am happy in that the game was a good build-up for more important challenges in the forthcoming World Cup and African Nations Cup qualifiers.”

Line up: Kennedy Mweene; Clive Hachilensa(Judge M’kandawire), Billy Mwanza (Lyianga Chiwanki) Elijah Tana (Morgan Kaoma), Noah Chivuta;  Francis Kombe, Francis Kasonde, Whiteson Simwanza, Henry Banda,    Emmanuel Mayuka, Rodger Kola

I hope the young boys of today take heed and watch dvd’s of these teams if available. These men used to wear that Jersey with pride and honor and winning was what it was all about. Not to say they current generation does not have the hunger but do they really want it like the above wanted it? if the current generation aspires to be great then they need to study the orginal Chipolopolo better known as the KK11. Who is the Stone Nyirenda or Kelvin Mutale of today? The Myriad of chances created these guys would have scored.

wer did they find this coach coz really ive never heard of him n i think
his luckin experience. i wonder how much the paying him for losing! please let some one we know do the job coz the talent is there!

  3. alex on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 7:17 AM

We have talented players who are put in wrong positions. where is mundenda and cliford mulenga? losing trainer are you qualified in losing? African football is played in african style not experiments. visibly annoyed with you french jokers and unserious players. Noah chivuta you deserve a place.Do your home work before 06/09/08 ,talent is available.

  4. Big Steve from SA on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 7:49 AM

Here we go again, same old story of blaming the coach, don’t we ever get tired. Apart from Noah Chivuta in the beginning formula no one was out of their natural position, so lets drop that excuse please. We had better ball possession and had numerous scoring opportunities and nothing came to fruitation. We simply just cannot score and that is were the problem is. Another thing is before you throw names at the coach, do some research and find out if these players score at there respective clubs. We lost and it is heart breaking especially that it was a developmental side but lets iron out what the problems were in this game instead of this finger pointing. It has never helped and I promise you it will never help either. With regards to players all I can say to the cooach is cast the net wider.

  5. Mr Dux on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 8:19 AM

A lot has been talked about the under-20 enterprising Emmanuel Mayuka, but if you look at the overal performance of this young talented striker he hasn’t really done much as compared to what he has been talked about in the media.

  6. Conrad on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 8:35 AM

I agree with Big steve, apart from Noah every one played in their natural positions. our players just cant score be it at club level or national level, its the same. the issue of blaming the coach is out. they created chances shot 11 times off target and only 3 times on target. i feel we have put too much responsiblity on youngsters ( Kola and Mayuka) who are ofcourse the best strikers at club level. but they are still raw.

  7. Shidada, Windhoek, Namibia on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 9:31 AM

The coach should also change his tictics you can not score 1 goal in 450 minutes, I don’t see Zed beating Togo.

  8. governor on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 10:06 AM

Conrad i agree wit u,thats a same problem we ve been crying for, most off our players r too raw,and we fans and media ve put our players were they don’t belong…as a fact of football u need to fight for a place at National team level, but nowdays that is a forgotten issue, most of them ve no experience in Zambian league…and after playing few games in league, they r considered 4 national team and immediately they r big headed, why?becoz they r alrways in media as a big player………we ve lost that in Zambian foot…were we had stages to reach national team,,,,lets b onest wit our selves,we will cry over this years in years out….we need to go back to our football calture………Don’t even blame the Coach, thats why nowdays players r finnished at the age of 22-26 years..they can’t handle the pressure when things r tough….

  9. Vimbling on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 11:01 AM

I have said and will always say HERVE RENARD IS A JOKE.Honestly people do you think this guy is going to take us anywere? The next thing will here is that he has resigned. How can you build a team when you keep changing the whole team. And FAZ sure how do they hire a coach for goalkeepers when the problem is with the strikers?suprisingly how people tend to think.Renard will not takes us anywere trust me.Come 06/09/08 you will see that Renard is a joke,Shakes Mashaba and Patrick Phiri even George Lwandamina himself are better than this Renard. The question is of all coaches why pick a Physical trainer who will not take us anywere not even Africa cup.

  10. Seen from afar on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 11:23 AM

Conrad & Governor, that is spot on, something for us to be wary of in the future.

Right now, the pressure is on to score, convert, execute chances! In all honesty i think this is the easy bit to do – after the hard work of the build up play, we should put the ball away. Maybe there is to much thinking, to much emphasis and pressure around scoring a goal. Even though the Dutch didn’t win the last Euro’s i found it refreshing in the opening games, that there attitude was they scored as just part of playing the game, there wasn’t any if we score, it was we are playing and part of that is scoring. It doesn’t matter who scores a goal, a goal is just a goal, score a hat-trick. I hope some of our young strikers in the spot light here can question there own psychology in this matter. Guys we need you to be cold blooded…

  11. Big Steve from SA on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 12:11 PM

Vimbling please, try to focus on what the problem is and be a part of the solution. Firing coaches has not worked before why will it work now. Dont you honestly think that blaming the coach everytime you loose is so old fashioned for todays game?? The boys played well, even the defence that we laughed at at Afcon were able to subdue presure. We just got knocked from a spot kick. This route of blaming the coach and undermining his capabilities is so dead these days. We all know that he is still getting to know the players and Chicken Lwandamina is there by his side. We are simply not scoring and Conrad is so right with regards to the hype the media puts about these youngsters these days. I wish they could at least score in a couple of consecutive games for the national team before they are in the papers. In my opinion they still need a lot of growth and thus should still be in the lower ranks, u20 & u23.

  12. DaMwiinger on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 12:33 PM

It was the defence at the Afcon and now it’s the strike force. It would be nice to give as many players a chance as possible in trying to find a solution to this but then we don’t have the time. And even if we had the time, there is the pressure of some overzealous fans(and there are many of such) who would view this as experimenting. To be honest I am lost for words-I can only imagine what is going through Renard’s head. Where does he find strikers? We should probably face reality and admit that we are a long way off to achieving our goals. Having said that, not all is lost. At times, all you need is a break throw and then the goals will start flowing. It’s only unfortunate that we lost to South Africa and that is always painful to me than if we lost to any other team.

  13. derricknho on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 12:59 PM

At this stage there is no need of according each and every player a chance to prove himself because time is not with us and indeed we have a big task of making it to world cup/african cup 2010.We only have one more game to go and I suppose all our efforts should be channelled towards beating Togo but funny enough we have started from all over as if we have qualified already.Cosafa would have been taken seriously to mould the players particularly the defence as that is the spect with mostly locals but everything is so mixed up.Why not just call a few U20/U23 players we already know and fuse them with the Tana’s and the like?Mayuka/Kola have been rushed to the national team.Sebastian and William Ndovu made a great impact last year in the semi final stage of COSAFA where we beat the hot favourite now Mozambique 5-1 but why have we dropped these talented players who have proved themselves?Kalusha’s influence on the team is being expoesd as this was the same approach he had taken when he was the Coach and the end result was that he resigned.Shame to you Kalusha FIVE GAMES without scoring but only one score through a penalt. We have gone back 2 years down the stream.Abash Kalu & his physical education teacher kaya ngati ni trainer!

Lets recall Mbesuma. He’s been impressive at Sundowns. Otherwise, we’ll terribly lose or draw against Togo.

  16. Big Steve from SA on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 1:41 PM

If in his current form he is the answer to our goal scoring problems, please tell me why Sundowns have not signed him outright like they did Zuma and Mphela, they have put him on a special programme and only after will decide. If he is still currently that lethal that we keep singing the same swan song how come he is not an obvious at club level. Please let Mbesuma pick up form before we start dancing to this tune.

  17. Lovely shot on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 4:23 PM

It was an easy prediction. We cried and cried enough, our lung will burn. It takes just 30 min of play to notice the problem is zambian team, during the days when the team was the best africa, we had midfielders who were a combination of creativity and physic, we had options. I did not see a pass that we call KILLER, but alot of running from Henry Banda, even where he was supposed to pass,

Let the coach work on the mid

  18. DaMwiinger on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 6:29 PM

Good point Big Steve. Some people just enjoy living in past glory. We need to be pragmatic about our situation and deal with it accordingly. I honestly don’t think we are ready, let alone, deserve to qualify for the world cup. Alot goes into getting a team together, particularly a national team were players only play together occassionally. Even countries with quality players struggle to find their rhythm so in my view it is a far cry for us to be talking world cup when we have such raw players. How long did it take us to have a squad that had a genuine chance to win the Afcon? And even though we were a formidable force, we never made it to the world cup. As a matter of fact, the only trophy we have ever won that is worth mentioning is the old east and central Africa cup. So please let’s not point fingers at anyone but rather work together to ensure we are at least a decent side.

  19. Mwamwa on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 7:54 PM

We should consider taking a painful decision which Nigeria sometime back took! For a while withdraw from some of these competitions which we know that we will NEVER qualify for let alone win anything.

Learn from others – start with Youth football – School football, Soccer schools etc. Have them well supported. At club level, have serious sponsorship. Let the young promising footballers join bigger teams in Europe if possible – at give away fees not demanding abnormal figures. Then we might be on the way to rediscovering what we have lost – ZCCM sponsorship/support!!!! With football administrators – Elect serious, proven fellows not those living in the past glory. Hard to take but let us not pretend that all is well!!!

Ba zed i lyk the pasion.1st of all witdrawin from major competitions is not a solution and that shud not evn b entataind.we lost a game we dominated both in play and tactic simply bcoz we cudnt sco the sem hapnd wen we playd swazland in both gems.i bliv the fact that we r able 2 dominate so much yet sco so few spiks much abt our strikers.we hav used not les than 7 of our best striker in these few games 2 no avail.guys the coch has dan his pat on giving players chance(7=mayuka kola chris sunzu kombe jacob james clifod)i think evn if bring another coch he wil pik from these boys.
