Football Association of Zambia, FAZ President Kalusha Bwalya has ruled out recalling some of the former Zambian internationals to the current squad.
In an interview with Zambianfootball.net at the Bank of Zambia Sports Complex earlier today, the former Chipolopolo number 11 paid tribute to the old guards for their contribution but said ‘we can not compare apples and oranges’ trying to defend the inclusion of Elijah Tana and Clive Hachilensa.
“We have also, to look at some people have had chances before and they have not taken them. We cannot compare the other people with…we cannot compare apples and oranges or with tomatoes and I think people have to be realistic,” he said after being asked if Harry Milanzi (pictured above) and Moses Sichone will get the chance of proving their credentials to Chipolopolo trainer Herve Renard, the same way Tana, Hachilensa and Ian Bakala have been given.
“We know experience is important but we have to look at a good balance, good mix. So if we have to use every player who has played in the national team in the last 15 years, I think then we will be losing focus,’’ added the FAZ boss.
Elijah Tana deserves a call up because he has been a great servant…? What about a testimonial for the defence kingpin ?
“The most important is that we look to the future. Whilst we appreciate their contribution, some of the players have made it, its now time for other players to come in and contribute and be given chance.
Bwalya who watched today’s morning training session addressed the players and encouraged them as they broke camp ahead of this weekend’s KCM/FAZ Premier League matches.
“The most important thing is encouragement to our boys. The technical bench is doing a good job and we have a lot of good players. We have vast experience and a lot of players are pushing for positions.
“We want everyone to come to the national team and give what they can and the positions for the national team are always going to be open to players,” he said
The Chipolopolo Boys’ are set to regroup on Monday. South African quartet of Kalilio Kakonje, Noah Chivuta, Davies Nkausu and Given Singuluma are expected in the country over the weekend together with head trainer Hevre Renard.
Do you agree with Kalu that ‘its now time for other players to come in and contribute’ ahead of the old guards? Have you Say

It is now clear that Herve Renard is just being given names by Kalusha and co. at the FAZ. Sichone is far much better than Tana and plays for better clubs even though he is currently clubless. I hope we’ll not cry foul when it is too late. LET US CALL SICHONE, SINKALA and the others to the National Team, this is a national team not a Kalusha select.

Kalu is off side on this issue.Yes we can’t compare oranges with apples but is he sure we need Hachilesa in the squard at the expense of Hichani,Nyambe,Kasonde,Chinyama,Sichondwe,Nkausu & other young stars?.Was he happy with that school boy defending Hachilesa showed in the game aganist Cameroun?.We need experience but not from Hachilesa.Sichone & Sinkala’s experience in Germany for 9yrs is not a min achievement I think Kalu needs advice on this issue.
chanda on Thu, 17th Jul 2008 3:09 PM
Kalu and sichone will never be in good terms
Vincent Numbwa on Thu, 17th Jul 2008 4:06 PM
Kalu is point on, althogh I don`t think we need Hachilesa.Come on people be realistic, the selection of players is the responsibility of the technical bench, FAZ Technical Commitee and not a one man show.In any case our coach does not still know all the players and he is out on HOLIDAY Should every one else be on holiday and wait for the coach to come. We need to move just as the nation has not come to a stand still even when the president is unwell.( GET WELL SOON S.C)

Iwe DINAMO. You are insisting on a dead issue. Sinkala maybe alright, but Sichone needs to prove himself with his club. The guy is tired and not perfoming at his club.
Why do you need Sichone who cant perform. In Europe, you cant be paid for not doing anything. Sichone was offloaded by his other previous team due to unsatisfactory perfomance. I told you that us the fans do not see Sichone on a daily basis but his club does, and when they got rid of him, it tell us that he was not up to scratch. Fullstop.

Kalu is right. Some players have not shown any commitment at all when called to play for Zambia. Let us give younger players a chance, after all thats why we have U20 and U23. We need progression. Leave those who are not commited to national duty out.
Mumba on Thu, 17th Jul 2008 4:32 PM
Sichone is arrogant and has refused to play for Zambia. Other players like Sinkala have come forward and offered their services and will surely be included in Future.
Sunzu brothers, Mayuka, Katongo, Kola, Kalaba, work hard guys, you are the future. We need to be watching you in UEFA.

It’s uncertain if he singled anyone out, i don’t think he did. I personally feel like Kalu that certain players still have something to offer, but of course it won’t be all of them, as he says “good balance, good mix”.
Even though there are allot of players training, still not all potentials are being tried, as Dinamo points out in his list of youngsters. It seems a tuff task to try them all, maybe we should be more patient. We look forward to all players and coaches regrouping after the weekend, let’s see a concerted and united effort.
Eyes on the ball.

Alvin, point. we need to look to the future.
CAN A PLAYER PROVE HIS POINT AT 35,36,37,38,39 OR 40YRS. My four years boy observed one player and ask me, “Dad!! he is turning slowly like a truck”, i will not mention his name but he has been called up to the camp. I feel bad.
its football politcs, Cheers Kalu

One point, i watched the training, TANA is training like cup final, if he breaks the leg, he won’t heal
chief on Thu, 17th Jul 2008 6:14 PM
Kalu is right to some extent, for real what contributing can come from people like Sichone and Milanzi at the moment? If they do a good work why was Sichone offloaded by his club?and how many goals has Milanzi scored currently?.People lets give chance to new boys as we approach 2010!
clement on Thu, 17th Jul 2008 8:15 PM
I think kalu is now trying to call back his brother Joe to the national team
Please kalu should allow the caoch to choice prayers. He was once the national team caoch he chose prayers he wanted.
Mushimwa on Thu, 17th Jul 2008 10:20 PM
One thing I know, u cant rate a player if u havent seen him play! The so called ‘old guns’ have never impressed. I agree with Great Kalu, let the young boys shine, its their time to burn. SICHONE, MILANZI, please rest. Please. Oh, my GOD
Matafwali on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 12:18 AM
I have not been one to question Kalu in the past, but the comments attributed to him above cannot go without comment. I am now convinced that he is involved in the player selection and players who have crossed him wrong do not stand a chance. Players should be picked on merit, I do not care how long they have been playing. If they are playing at a level and are competitive, then they should be able to contribute. I’m sorry, Kalu, but you’ve got it all wrong! The ‘apples and oranges’ analogy would only fit if you were comparing players from different eras. Zambian football should come first and above all personal grudges.

The zambian circus continues, people, for those of you in Zambia or is it those of us in zambia, take time to watch the local league, Hachilensa who was for along time rumored to be plying his trade has been on the bench at Zesco and guess who was in the squad when this was happening, Nyambe Mulenga and William Chinyama, bane, there time is gone, he gave wat he had left at the AFCON so its good ridabce, Milanzi, people please, we dont need his influence anymore, he recently was in lusaka and went away with his fellow retiree, Matsauto Tembo and unfortunately Perry Mutapa have now gone to Angola, this reminds me of the J league where unlike our zambian counterparts footballers who made it like Histro stoickov and Dunga went to finish their careers, i say again we have more than enough talent from which we can build key word build a great squad, as far as experience is concerned TANA, Mweene, Chris Katongo, isaac chansa, joseph musonda, and Billy Mwanza are enough.
Big Steve from SA on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 8:37 AM
Matwfwali has got the correct angle of this argument. People, the argument is not the particular players and their performances, the argument here is what is Kalu doing making such drastic comments on player selection???? Such a comment only gives the impression that the coach has a very small part to play with player selection. What is he saying here, if Harverd asked for Sichone to come through for assessment Kalu will not sign the cheque too purchase the air ticket??
Kalu we know you are the boss at FAZ but two things are pretty obvious 1. Players like Sichone and coaches like Phiri do make your book and you are using your current power to push a dumb cause. 2. You should not start extending your power to issues of who can and cannot play, that’s the coach’s decision. We ask one thing of you bwana president, when it comes to player selection PLEASE BUTT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
amos mumba on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 8:48 AM
We only need 11 players on the pitch and we can only pick the best mix.if zambia was like Nigeria with over 100 players in Europe ,we could have all been confused about who to pick.Kalusha was right, a good mix is all we need and not call all the players in the entire world for trials. They will always be those who will not make the team no matter how many good players a country may have.Give Renard ,Kalusha and the Faz team a chance to prove themselves.Great job kalu!

ESK on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 10:01 AM
I’ll repeat myself, this is a national team not a FAZ or Kalusha. Sichone played quite well based on the posting on this website. The guy (Sichone) is good, so lets call him to national duty.
nsama,unza on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 11:15 AM
sometimes we do the right things at the wrong time and give right and realistic information when we are not suppose to.kalu is hundred percent right but i dont think he is the right person to blacklight the old players.i for one believe playing old plyers is not a problem as long as they deliver’ but again we see young talented players beeing suppressed.this decision remains to renard because there are times you need experience in the team and obviously you will need players like sinkala to enforce the squad.kalu should distance himself from such comments coz it will appear as if he is controlling the whole technical bench
Seen from afar on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 11:36 AM
Guys, i don’t think it’s fair to say Kalu is picking players or controlling the team, he is just stating the approach of FAZ and that is to look to the future. So the federation and the coach can work to same agenda, that is what we want!
The thing about Sichone is a bit of a shame, because really he should have been called before the qualifiers when he had been playing well in Germany and even scoring goals. Maybe, they did try and call him then, but we don’t know. Now his concern is that he unsigned, so it’s even less likely…
Ichimpombwa on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 12:17 PM
We are very aware that there is only one sure way of proving critics , fans and particularly coaches who deserves to wear the ‘beloved’ chipolopolo jersey – ALL STARS Vs THE REST.
The 13 player [ fans] has the best overview as they monitor more games than coaches who tend to sample performance. Lets create such games where all players are given an oppertunity to show themselves over a period of days or weeks. Our season is on break, Europe & South Africa are preparing for the new season. Couldnt we have organized for such in order to see who can do what and when.
Unfortunately, at a time when the National team coach should be organising training camps for all players advised to him by coaches, technical commitees & fans alike, he goes to holiday. Honestly there seems to be no seriousness in our preperation. If the national team is in camp why should the Head Coach go on holiday especially that he has only one game more [TOGO] to reach the next stage. As a tax paying , proud and truly Zambian football supporter I will not forgive FAZ if we fail to qualify to the World Cup. AFCON is perrenial that any Local coach can manage. FAZ GET SERTIOUS !!!
Dinamo on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 12:52 PM
I still insist,if we want to groom young talent then Tana,Bakala & Hachilesa should have no chance in the squard & if we want to mix with experience then even Sinkala, Sichone & others should be tried before we sideline them. This is a national team no man should take sides.PERIOD!!!
ESK on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 2:20 PM
Atleat Dinamo agrees with me. Let everyone be called and accessed. I demand that Sichone be called, very few of our defenders play in leagues as competitive as Sichone’s. Viva Sichone, Viva. Abash Kalusha’s manipulations, Abash!!!!!!!

ALL STARS Vs THE REST, we used to have this, where has it gone
Good idea
emmanuel chali on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 3:07 PM
Yes moze and andrew shud be tried as well.Infact they make a good combination in playing with Tana and Christopher.Faz officials let all the professionals be called and try them if they are capable of delivering for our mother zambia.Just call all of them and see who are not going to respond then u are going to judge from that.
amos mumba on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 3:08 PM
Sichone had his chance when he was at his peak but put to us all sorts of conditions before he could agree to play for the Chipolopolo. Now that he wants to market himself for a club contract ,he is more than willing to play even for free. One club he was playing for in German even attributed 50% of goals consided by the club to him! From the last game i watched him he was too slow to cope with any fast striker.Personally ,i do not think there is any problem with our current Chintu /billy mwanza partnership at heart of our defence.Yes defensively in midfield we still need the services of Andrew Sinkala, otherwise we have enough players among the crop that we have watched so far.
Chris Ndaba on Fri, 18th Jul 2008 4:59 PM
I think that Kalu is the most qualified person to speak on this issue. Let us give him the benefit of the soubt unless there is someone out there who knows better?
Matafwali on Sat, 19th Jul 2008 2:46 AM
My point is players should be picked on merit. Young or old. It appears there is an element of favoritism in the selection process. Why are players like Mudenda or Himonde missing from the squad? Pick the best players!
Ichimpombwa has a point as well. Why is the coach on vacation at this time? Should he be familiarizing himself with the players? FAZ needs to get serious.
ba zambia on Sat, 19th Jul 2008 10:20 AM
i have been quiet waiting for people to talk but i think the discussion is balanced. we are building a team for 2010 but i dont know if the old guys we need will be fit enough by then so let us build a team that will be there in 2010 lest we find ourselves building a team in 2009 for the world cup
michael muchinga on Sat, 19th Jul 2008 10:24 AM
bravo francis and the zambianfootball family, indeed we need old guys but like ba zambia has said we can build a team around tana, milanzi, and all the old guys but will they be there with the fire power in 2010?i dont think so. Kalu you have the eyes on the ball and you are spot on. let us build a team like spain we have the players.
Chumvwa on Sun, 20th Jul 2008 11:17 PM
Firstly, please, we should ensure that we select the best players for NOW. Secondly, could some people stop this Hero Worshiping of Kalusha please? Let the coach chose the players he feels can deliver; besides, if he does not deliver, he will be fired!!
ESK on Mon, 21st Jul 2008 4:07 PM
How can we be building a team for 2010 even before we qualify. Lets first qualify then we can get rid of the old guys, otherwise, we are going nowhere. Even 2010 if we’re not careful we won’t be there!!!!!!
