Zambia lose to Togo

June 1, 2008

Togo beat Zambia 1-0 in Group 11 of the 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

The game was Togo’s home tie but was played in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, because of a four-match stadium ban owing to crowd violence after a Nations Cup qualifier against Mali in Lome last year.

The only goal of the game was scored in the 17th minute by striker Olufade Adekanmi, who plays his football in Belgium for Gent.

Both Chamanga & ‘Tsunami’ played but the staff sergeant had an injury time goal disallowed.

Chipolopolo captain Chris Katongo’s injury time goal was disallowed for because Chamanga was in an offside position.

After the match several Zambian players protested to the Burkina Faso referee and in the process Isaac ‘Gattuso Chansa was handed his second yeallow card for the day and was eventually red carded.

Chansa will miss the Swaziland game. As usual Felix Katongo was Zambia’s better player with Clifford Mulenga also impressing. The Zambian Gattuso was given matching orders after the match. The former Power Dynamos ace also received a red card against Bafana Bafana in September last

Swaziland are the other team in in Group 11 which was reduced to three teams following the withdrawal of Eritrea from the qualifiers.

The next game in this group is Swaziland hosting Togo on the weekend of 7-8 June.

Line up: Kennedy Mweene, William Chinyama, Joseph Musonda, Kampamba Chintu, Billy Mwanza, Francis Kasonde (James Chamanga 65′), Felix Katongo, Isaac Chansa, Chris Katongo ,Roger Kola (Emmanuel Mayuka 45′), Clifford Mulenga.

Subs: Kalililo Kakonje, Sanida Zulu, Mulenga Nyambe, James Chamanga, Emmanuel Mayuka, Rainford Kalaba, Kennedy Mudenda

Disappointing result indeed. Even more disappointing is the suggestion of poor officiating but that is part of the game. We just need to learn from this and make the most of the rest of the games. Ensure we win both games against Swaziland-by good margins too- and win against Togo by a minimum of 2 nil. On the technical side, I think we need a holding mid fielder to support our frail defence. The alternative would be to play five defenders with one of them playing just ahead of the last four. We can then play three others in the middle of the pack with one of them (Chris would be my suggestion) supporting the strker-Mayuka or Kola.

much better than the last time we were away to Togo. 4-1! we cant afford any more large goal differences. I see some improvement Zambia, especially that we didnt get walked over seeing from this match report that we even had a goal disallowed. I like the injection of the junior players into the senior team. old legs stay on the bench! We need to WIN the remaing games. BIG! especially the Togo game in september.

I am afraid, Isaac Chansa has a very poor disciplinary record. He needs to wake up and avoid unnecessary yellow cards. These yellow/red cards eventually affect the whole team. In this case he will not be available for the next game when we need him. The coach will need to deal with this problem as quickly as possible. CCM

I think the Zambia National Soccer Team performed well though they lost in a contronversial match. That game would have been a drawn but my blame goes to the bad officiating. Zambian victory is stolen for so many time we need to stand up and fight for what is rigt. All we need to do this saturday is to beat Swaziland atleast by three(3) goals. All the best. win or lose we are on your side.
