Ghana, a point away from quarter finals

Ghana will be looking to maintain their winning form at the African Cup of Nations today when the Black Stars meet Morocco in the final Group A match.

The Black Stars need only draw against the Atlas Lions in a game which kicks off at 17:00GMT at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra to stay top the standings and ensure a last eight berth in the tournament.

Morocco, who got off their campaign with a 5-1 beating of Namibia before losing 3-2 to Guinea, need to beat Ghana to improve their chances of qualifying past the group stage as they are tied on three points with group members, Guinea, who seem to have an easier match on Monday, against Namibia in Sekondi.

Both Group A games will kick off simultaneously at 1900 CAT.

Though Ghana needs only a draw to qualify, Black Stars coach, Claude Le Roy still wants to maintain a winning run in the tournament.

“We have six points but the three teams can go to the quarter finals. I think it’s better to have six points than three points. Because, I think a draw is enough for us to finish first. But we wouldn’t play for a draw; we would play to win this last game,” Le Roy said.

The coach says the Ghana’s opponents for Monday are under pressure.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Morocco, but they’re under pressure, we’re not,” Le Roy added.

However, Ghana will be missing Laryea Kingston through suspension as Le Roy tries to find a replacement winger.

“When you are a coach, you are always worried when a player like Laryea is out for a game. I don’t like that. I don’t like a player under suspension and I don’t like it when I see a player injured.

“But we have a lot of players in this squad who can take his place. I would maybe make a new adjustment to our tactics.

“I think our way of playing in the last game won’t be the same like the first two games.” Le Roy said.

Moroccan coach, Henri Michel is demanding that his team plays better against Ghana as he intends to go all out for victory.

“The question’s simple, the answer difficult – we have to beat Ghana, in Ghana, if we’re to continue our journey otherwise we’ll be going home,” Michel said.

However, Michel is counting on the return of Sofiane Alloudi from injury to help improve their chances. Sofiane scored a hat-trick in their opening match.

“He got injured, he’s received treatment, now he’s recovering.

“I can’t say whether he’ll be back in time, I’ll just have to wait and see,” the Morocco coach said.

Michel focusing on Ghana game

Morocco coach, Henri Michel is demanding an improved performance from his team when they play African Cup of Nations hosts, Ghana on Monday in the final group game at the Ohene Djan Stadium.

Michel watched Morocco start the tournament with a heavy win, thrashing Namibia 5-1 before losing 3-2 to Guinea. And to qualify past the group stage, Henri Michel’s Atlas Lions will have to beat Ghana.

Guinea and Morocco have three points apiece but the Guineans look to have an easier game on their hands on Monday against Namibia at the Sekondi Sports Stadium as both Group A matches kick off simultaneously at 1900 CAT.

The Moroccan coach prays his team plays better against Ghana as he intends going all out for victory.

“Our next game is against Ghana and we have to work hard. We have to battle it out to get the results. It is going to be difficult especially, because we play against Ghana which is a tough team.

“But as I said, we have to work hard to win that game and go to the next stage. So that’s what we intend doing,” Henri Michel said.

“Guinea played better and deserved the victory. Things didn’t work out for us. We will go all out against Ghana next Monday.”

Henri Michel says his team’s defeat to Guinea was a general problem as he analysed what went wrong on the day but he expects things to get better against Ghana.

“We thought of injecting new blood in the midfield to make it more efficient but I just realised it was the whole team. We were affected as things didn’t work out the way it should. So, we are just working on it and expecting it to be better.

“They made mistakes which they paid for. Next is Ghana and that is all they have to focus on,” Henri Michel added.
Moroccan star-player, Youssef Hadji says it’s time to forget about the defeat and focus on the Ghana game.

“This is something to forget about and concentrate on the next match to come,” says the Moroccan player.

Ghana, who are closer to a last eight place at the tournament need only a draw to confirm their place in the quarter-finals.
