Bamfuchile quits Namibia

November 30th, 2007 Comments off

Former Zambia national soccer team coach Ben Banfuchile has quit his post as Namibian national coach. The Zambian born trainer guided the brave warriors to their second appearances at the Ghana 2008 edtion of MTN African Cup of Nations after a 10 years absence.

Bamfuchile confirmed to The Namibian that he would no longer be in charge of the national team, claiming that the Namibia Football Association (NFA) was “disrespectful and careless” and made it difficult for him to carry out his duties as head coach.

Bamfuchile said he had been promised transport for over a year now, but nothing happened.
He said he had to take a taxi to work at Soccer House or ask his team manager, Tim Isaacs, for a lift to work.
“I am tired. I’ve had enough. I am done now. It’s over,” he said.
Bamfuchile ensured Namibia’s qualification to next year’s African Nations Cup – the first time this has happened in ten years.
He said it was painful for him to be treated “like a child”.
“I am not a kid and I am not a beggar. I don’t beg for money or anything.
I thought I would be treated with respect and being a professional, I thought things would be done in a professional way. “he said.
“But for a national team coach not to have transport, which is so important to carry out duties, is really shameful,” he said.

NO GOING BACK Bamfuchile said he would not reconsider the decision to quit, or accept any other offer from the NFA, because he could do better elsewhere.
“I love football and I was really committed in taking this team to the Nations Cup.
But I am very disappointed by my bosses and this has left me with no option but to resign,” he said.
Bamfuchile said he would go back to Zambia to manage his business, which supplies mining machinery.
“I will go back home. I have a business back at home and my wife is currently running it. We make enough money and I don’t think it is worthwhile to continue with this job,” he said.

Neither the NFA’s Acting Secretary General, Barry Rukoro, nor its President, John Muinjo, could be reached for comment yesterday because they had their cellphones turned off.
NFA Vice President Korbinian Viskaya Amutenya said he was not aware of Bamfuchile’s resignation.
“All I know is that he [Bamfuchile] is going on holiday.
I don’t know anything about him resigning, as it has not been communicated to me officially,” he said.

Bamfuchile has been praised for ensuring Namibia a place in the last 16 of the 2008 African Nations Cup after beating Ethiopia in their last match.
This achievement earned him the Namibia Sports Commission’s Coach of the Year award.
Bamfuchile had mixed results with the national team in international friendlies, including the Cosafa Castle Cup in which Namibia failed at the first hurdle, but his mission was to take the side to the Nations Cup.
He achieved this feat with a relatively young side which primarily consisted of locally based players.
Bamfuchile’s assistant coaches are former Warriors and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronnie Kanalelo and former Black Africa midfielder Brian Isaacs.

During his tenure as zambia national team coach between 2000 and 2002, he led zambia to the 2002 MTN Afican cup of Nations without losing a game. Bamfuchile was also part of the 2006 technical side which was led by Kalusha Bwalya. His experience dates back to 1994 when he was one the assistance of the late Ian Poterfield to the side which was lost to Niger

LWANDAMINA TO UNLEASH NEW GUNS

November 30th, 2007 Comments off

Zambia national under 20 coach George’ Chicken’ Lwandamina has named a relatively unknown squad for this years COSAFA under-20 Championship which will take place from 31st November 28, 2007 to 9thdecember 2007 in South Africa.
Canada experience
Zambia national under-20 soccer team will play its first game after participating at the world youth cup in Canada in July. At the canada2007 the young Chipolopolo surprised many by reaching the last 16 were they were knocked out by Nigeria. The young Chipolopolo played champagne football at the championship as they drew with Jordan, lost narrowly to Spain and defeated Uruguay before losing to Nigeria and with such a background many soccer pundits believe they are the favourites for the tournament as they were the only team from the region to rub shoulders with Manchester united’s Spanish defender Gerald Pique and Seville’s winger Capel who is been featuring regularly for his side la liga and champions league.

Golden Generation
But unfortunately ninety percent of the squad that featured at the world youth cup are not part of the COSAFA squad. Surving from the golden generation of 2007 is hard tackler full back Joseph Zimba, Richard Sakala, wonder boy Emmanuel Mayuka, Simon Lupiya and Reading fc trialists Stophira Sunzu. The backbone of class of 2007 is no longer there and missing from the squad is Jacob Banda, Henry Nyambe, Dennis Banda, Goodson Kachinga, Richard Phiri, Sebastian Mwansa, Clifford Mulenga, Justine Zulu, Rogers Kola and African Youth Cup top Scorer Fwayo Tembo. To the class of 07 they were truly a fantastic side as for the incoming gems Lwandamina and his technical bench knows better but never bet against ‘chicken’. Lwandamina is using the championship to expose the young guns for next years qualifiers for the African Youth Cup as they will be the ones involved as most of the golden generation will not eligible even though they are eligible to feature now. So to other COSAFA teams this should be good news for them but never trust Lwandamina when he says it’s a developmental squad.

New Guns
When Lwandamina named his squad, many players are uknown to most of the European fans whose allegiance belongs to arsenal, Manchester united, Barcelona, Real Madrid and many Zambian fans but to the real Zambian football fanatics names such as Kabwe warriors exciting winger Henry’cristiano Ronaldo’Banda, National Assembly’s Judge Mkandawire and Nchanga Rangers’ lanky defender Moses Mulambi are familiar. The other players to watch out for are midfield geniuses Nathan Sinkala (Andrew Sinkala’s young brother), Lawrence Pondani and diminutive Musonda Munaile. While in defence no nonsense Micheal katongo who has modeled his game as Zambia international defender Billy Mwanza should be a revelation alongside former international winger Andrew Tembo’s younger brother Luka. In Luka Tembo, Zambia can now boasts of a naturally left footed player occupying the left fullback position in 14 years at any level as the last left footed player to occupy the position was the late Whiteson Changwe who perished in Gabon disaster in 1993. Lwandamina who is ably assisted by Oswald Mutapa and Emmanuel Siwale can mastermind zambia’s new gems to glory as they look to bring the trophy back for a record eighth time.

Zambia plays its match against Angola on 1st December before battling out with Seychelles on 3rd and plays its last group game on 5th against Namibia young Brave warriors.

Goalkeepers: Noah Mwanza (TP Rangers), Philip Banda (National Assembly)

Defenders: Joseph Zimba, Richard Chibwe (Both Red Arrows), Moses Mulambi (Nchanga Rangers), Michael Katongo (Kabwe Warriors), Luka Tembo (Lusaka Dynamos).

Midfielders: Mathews Chipampe (Profund Warriors), Judge Mukandawire (Young Arrows), Henry Banda (Kabwe Warriors), Nathan Chintu (South African based), Stophira Sunzu (Konkola Blades), Musonda Munaile (Young Zanaco), Lawrence Pondani (Red Arrows), Nathan Sinkala (Lusaka Celtic).

Striker: Derrick Mwansa (Nkwazi), Oswald Siwale (Zamtel FC), Daniel Banda (Nantes FC), Emmanuel Mayuka (Kabwe Warriors), Simon Lupiya (Red Arrows)

Bidvest Wits’ attacking midfielder Noah Chivuta says he is positive that he will make it into Zambia’s 22-man squad that is still to be selected for January’s African Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Chivuta tells Kick Off that he is more than satisfied with his performance in the last two games that he featured for Zambia. These were against Mozambique and South Africa in the Cosafa Cup tournament. He adds that, based on his showings in the two games, he is confident that he would be selected. “I will keep on working hard and if the selection of the finals team is based on the performance, then I am sure I will go to the finals.”The 24-year-old adds that he is also confident that the Students, who are currently in 9th place on the PSL log, will be in the top four when the League goes into recess in December.
