His local critics are still not convinced by his potential but his convincing goals, focus and all-round teamwork has won the hearts of many with attributes rarely seen in the league in recent times.

By the time he was 20 years old, the powerful striker had already represented Zambia at all levels. Jacob was a member of famous under-17 and 20 that included Rainford Kalaba, Clifford Mulenga, Felix Katongo, Davies Nkausu and Ignatius Lwipa.

He has been also capped four times at under-23 level were he scored two goals in the 2004 Athens Olympic qualifiers as Peter Kaumba side narrowly missed out on qualification to Ghana.

In the 2003 the energetic and pacey striker alongside Kalaba and Lwipa, guided the then division one side Afrisport to promotion into Zambia’s premier league as the Kitwe born scored an incredible 32 goals.

At start of the new Zambian 2004 premier season in April, the 19 year scored four goals in three games and this led to the then national team coach, Kalusha Bwalya to give him his debut against Togo in May 2004.

Kalusha took many soccer fans by surprise as he gave him a starting berth in a 2006 world cup qualifier against the Emmanuel Adebayor led Togo. But the Afro-headed justified his selection by scoring the only goal of the game.

A month later, he scored an acrobatic bicycle kick against Mauritius in a Cosafa castle cup match.

The Zambian hitman made one of the biggest transitions on any Zambian player from the lower ranks of Zambian league straight into the European league.

Jacob became the second Zambian player to break into the French league at any level since midfield genius Andrew Tembo had a brief spell at Olympique de Marseille in 1994.In December 2003, Jacob together with Collins Mbesuma attended trials at French ligue 1 side Stade Rennais but was unsuccessful.

During the summer of 2004, Mulenga with Billy Mwanza had a 3 week long trial with another French side Bastia but again that fell. Bastia’s loss was to be Chateauroux gain as he signed a four year deal in 2004.

In the 2004/05, Mulenga had an injury plagued season as he only made 17 appearances and scored five goals. In the 2005/06 he scored six goals in 25 games and he made 27 appearances in next season scoring 7 goals.

After an impressive campaign with Chateauroux, Mulenga signed for then French ligue 1 side Racing Strasbourg on a seasonal loan in August 2007.

The former Afrisports talisman has become a vital member of the Chipolopolo boys though he missed the 2006 African cup of Nations through injury.

After a year absence, Jacob was recalled to the squad in 2007 and he did not disappoint the fans as he scored the first goal and had a hand in the other two.

Mulenga was part of the Chipolopolo Boys’ squad that whitewashed Bafana Bafana in September.

With Collins Mbesuma ruled out through injury and Chris Katongo suspended for the first match against Sudan at the Ghana 2008 African Cup of Nations, Mulenga steered headed the Zambian attack together with James Chamanga.

Both Chamanga and Mulenga scored as the Chipolopolo Boys’s thrashed Sudan 3-0.

With the demotion of Strasbourg back to ligue 1, Mulenga returned to Berrichonne Chateauroux.

Height: 1.86m

Weight: 80 kg

Position: Attacker

Previous clubs: Afrissport Zambia Kitwe (ZAM), Chateauroux (FRA)

Current club: Racing Strasbourg (FRA)Zambia’s only export in the French ligue 1, Jacob Mulenga showed why many soccer pundits believe that he can be the next Didier Drogba. Against the Brazilian coached South Africa, Mulenga showed both tactical and technical brilliance. The Racing Strasbourg lanky striker was very strong in the air and on the ground just like Drogba. The tallest striker in the Chipolopolo squad can learn something from the African monster, Drogba. Drogba also played in the French ligue 2( alongside Florent Malouda) before he moved to French giants Marseille were he played with Mido then Chelsea. Drogba moved to Chelsea at 26 years and it had to take him two years before he started to bang in the goals for both club and country Mulenga’s path is quite similar to that of his mentor, he started his French adventure at ligue 2 side château roux were he scored 18 goals in 69 appearances for the club. At national, Mulenga is the youngest of the trio strikers coach Patrick Phiri has been using in Zambia’s recent games alongside collins mbesuma and chris katongo. Early in the 2007/08 season the kitwe born forward sighed for a ligue 1 side, Racing Strasbourg were he will be rubbing shoulders exchanging jerseys with the likes of Djibril Cisse, Nasri , Boro Zenden(all marseile) and Lyon players such as Benzema, Juninho, Fred, Wiltold and Sidney Govou. After passing his medical with Strasbourg, Mulenga had an exclusive interview with the cub’s website and this is how it went.

What is your feeling after the signature of your one year loan in Racing?

For me, it is a great progression to join such a club. That made four years that I evolved/moved in League 2 and I wanted to discover the high-level. I feel that I will be able to progress at Strasbourg. Are you surprised to join Racing?

It is true that at the time when I had the leaders of the club on line, I was surprised. I did not expect that a club of League 1 status to contact me this year. I had a good season with Chateauroux, with 7 marked goals and I hoped for a phone call secretly. When Strasbourg called, I could not say no.Doesn’t competition with Renteria, and Gameiro frighten you?

No, that does not worry me. Competition makes it possible, precisely, to progress. It will be up to me to make the efforts to bring myself to the level and to postulate in a place in the group. I know that I will have to work hard to be in the starting line up.

What type of attacker are you?

I like to only evolve/move points some and to take the depth. Moreover, the system of current play of the team is appropriate to me well, I think.Racing is impressive

What are your personal objectives for this first year Leagues 1 of them?

My objectives are before any collectives. If the team behaves well and plays well, it will be good for me. On my side, I will work a maximum and will progress. To play will be my reward.

What do you think of the beginning of season of the team?

Frankly, it is impressive. Normally, while coming from League 2, one promoted always encounters some difficulties at the beginning of course, time to go back to the level. I saw the match against Auxerre and I was in the platforms for the victory vis-a-vis Lens. One feels a great cohesion in this team.
